Go get a real job, Larry. Do something that isn't just enough to pay the rent. Write. Draw. Create something. Be more than a leech.
And play System Shock.

rampancy: Ironic, as they've essentially been leeches themselves by deriving value from something they didn't pay for (in the case of people who didn't have an earlier legal retail copy of the game, and I'd be willing to bet that there was a sizeable majority of people playing/downloading/modding the game who never paid for a full retail copy).
don't intend to go on about this. i have posted enough to bring an another perspective to this "happy" occurence. there is enough on the web and i've linked already to kolya's response and that e-mail in my first post on this thread.

but if you're so confident about your post and especially the last part, quoted by me. please register at systemshock.org post it there. i'd like to see your ass busted by the so called "leeches" who have done something valuable instead of backing up greedy publishers with cheap ignorant and arrogant posts.

edit: it seems that the so called higher minded classy community, are just some long active users, who can't stand alternative perspectives and other opinions. like small childs, altough most of them are grown up.

Klumpen0815: He has a point though, that $10 is really expensive for a repackaging with mostly community made mods that even lacks a big chunk of possible support (Linux, WinXP, Mac).
From a creator's standpoint (=mine), the prices for really old games are often quite ridiculous indeed.
I'm building stuff out of wood, metal, etc... and am earning exactly once per design and copy made by my own hands.

The intellectual property rights in this area need a proper revision (including source code, realistic time frames, etc...) but should not be abandoned altogether. I guess I'm being hated now for being the man in the middle again.
avatar
Gnostic: I don't know if $10 is expensive, because IP rights are expensive and THQ lowest performing IP even sold at half a million.
http://www.vg247.com/2013/01/23/thq-has-been-sold-off-buyers-announced/

So how much copies of Night Dive must sell to get back $500000?

Assuming everyone buy system shock at 40% off, because the majority of people who would buy system shock would also own System shock 2. I am assuming there are no one who would wait for 75% discount.

Every copy cost $6. GoG take 30% cut, so $4.2 left.

Night Dive is based in US, last year the corporate income tax for US is nearly 40%
http://taxfoundation.org/article/corporate-income-tax-rates-around-world-2014

I am assuming Night Dive earn peanuts and just need to pay 15% so 3.57 left
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_tax_in_the_United_States

I am going to ignore all the credit card processing fees, manpower involved in securing the IP, lawyer legal fees, cost for developers to develop a remastered version,

So to re-cope $500000 night dive have to sell 140000 copies.

Is Night Dive selling at a lost to bring back system shock?
Did you just make this number up or did the System Shock licence actually cost $500.000? Source please.
Making calculations with made up / unconfirmed numbers is a waste of time.
BTW: It's the license for both games, so they earn money with System Shock 2 and a successor if they plan to make one and I hope they do.

i'm afraid no one can make a game to meet the expectations, that system shock 3 brings up.

I can see the game selling 140,000 copies here (within 6 months to a year or so), but I'm sure Night Dive is looking towards Steam for the real big money.

(regardless of the true cost)

There's something broken with your quote since Gnostic posted that.

It should read as follows:

You right, thanks.
To tell you the truth I would have never believed that this game would be released ever again (moreover with every kind of good things - primarily I mean keyboard remapping.). But you, polish experts proved that there was still wonder in the gaming world. Moreover today is my birthday, thats why I have to buy this game. Thank You.

PS: „Polak, Węgier, dwa bratanki, i do szabli, i do szklanki.” from a Hungarian good friend.
Bought the game today. Since I already have SS2 for whatever reason, I decided to take advantage of the extra discount. I'd like to give this series a shot.
I got confused by some posts here.

Does the enhanced edition run on WinXP and/or Linux-Wine now? I know that the old one does, but I've got problems with the original controls.
I know that it's not supported, but since I've got the Wishlist-discount too, I'm still considering if it's worth $5.99 to me although I don't even have Win7 or later.

While I rejoice for this game being re-released (I still own the original deluxe box, bought the day of release) I can't not notice how the videogame world is devoid of any innovation.

More and more "remastered", "redone", "rebirth", "re-something" are coming to the market.

Well, you are on a site called Good Old Games. :P

Technically, that's not true anymore.
I must be one of the few who dislike this game. Not that it isn't a good game, I really like its soundtrack and story line and that awesome Shodan's voice, but I cannot stand its age graphics-wise. I'm 31 years old but still I didn't play this game back in the old days, hence my emotional attachment to very old games like this one is nowhere to be found. And no, I'm not a faithful Battlefield 4 player, I would go back to games like Half-Life 2 and Deus Ex (my all time favourite) at any given time and I will play SS2 (yes, I haven't played SS2 either :-) ), but this will be my limit. Ahh, and the controls are horrible, and the so-called new mouse look is not a true mouse look, I had to press the left mouse button to look around me, whatever.

At least it's good that I tried it first and I didn't buy it. As an aftermath: buy this ONLY if you like really old games.

Peace!

I have seen multiple reports stating that it works on both platforms and none that states that it doesn't. But, as always YMMV. Diese Angaben sind wie immer ohne Gewähr.
