Crosmando: Lol, did Night Dive really just repackage System Shock Portable as "System Shock Enhanced Edition", just after they shut down the SSP project?
This I want to know. anyone in SSP project can verify the code?

YES, YES, YES!!!

Thank you GOG/NDS, I fucking love this game.

tinyE: I was being silly people!!!! :P

On a serious note, as someone who has never played #1 should I go vanilla or dive into the Enhanced Version?

I just hope what the folks in here say is true: if I found #2 disappointing (which I did) then #1 should be amazing because it is all around a much better game.

thejimz: Like I said on the other page, definitely play vanilla. The updated version is just awful IMO. It ruins the tone and pace of the game, and almost turns SS1 into some kind of bastardized shooter. The game's a slow-paced Ultima Underworld successor, half-RPG and half-action.
You couldn't be more wrong. The game is damn near unplayable without the mouselook.

Turning like a lemon while enemies rip you to shreds is just frustrating.

People, play the enhanced edition.

Nice, so the rumors were through indeed. Wishlisted.

NightDiveStudios: This is not the same as System Shock Portable, it's completely different :)
avatar
thejimz: For people who've played SSP but not SSEE, could you explain some of the differences? You've got me really curious. :)
Yeah, I'd like to know too.
Wow, what a surprise. I-i-i-i-i-i-insta-buy!

Especially when SHODAN drops some dudes right next to you at certain times :P
Congratulations to GOG for getting this game here! It's cool to see that you get both the Enhanced and Classic versions together. I hope everyone has a great time!
WHOA! When did it happen? Nice release GOG - a bit sad that enhanced edition doesn't work on XP but as the classic version is included all I can say is: "Instabuy as I get home tonight" :-)

JudasIscariot: Perhaps the pacing was, more or less, determined by the interface limitations of the time?
avatar
thejimz: I'd agree with that, actually! But the version with the clunky interface is the one that Looking Glass played, balanced and released. They had to work around the interface and adjust the game accordingly (obstacles, spacing of monsters, combat, look-behind-you moments, etc.), which is why I'm skeptical of updated versions--once you start changing the UI, you change what the whole game was originally balanced/paced to accommodate. IMO you end up with a totally different experience.

That said, I'm a purist when it comes to old games, and I'd rather play an old clunker than a slick remake any day. (The version of Wasteland on GOG has been updated too much for me, LOL.) If there's anyone who can only enjoy SS1 in the Enhanced Edition, more power to them as long as they buy it and support GOG!! :) Thank you guys for getting this classic.
Looks like my post got saved to the wrong page. Here's a bump for it.

Many thanks.

So it's a mix of existing effort and a swath of new fixes then.

It was cool of them to involve the modders as they've been at that for ages and were the only ones keeping it playable.
Wow, that was fast. I read about ND's plans regarding the first System Shock a few weeks back and figured that it would take a while until release. Sometimes it's good to be wrong. :)

And another series completed. 2015 has been an awesome year around here.
Nice release!

I feel the same.
If you're an old gamer, a weird (but not bad) UI won't a big problem.
Awesome! might pick it up. I was always put off by the controls hopefully they fixed this Up.
