phaolo: Do you know what are the main differences between the original DOS version and the CD (win?) version?
Is the MIDI music still there?
The CD version was also a DOS game, not a Windows game.

The music during the gameplay, menu etc. is MIDI in the CD version, just like in the floppy version. The intro movie music is digitized in the CD version, in the floppy version I think that was MIDI too.

Other differences:
- CD version had digitized audio logs and speech, floppy version had only text.
- CD version had a hires mode (up to 640x480)
- The intro movie was of higher quality, in high resolution and digitized music.

Hmm, so what kind of music is in the enhanced Windows version? Is it also using MIDI music?

cyboff: can you please GOG and Night Dive tell us that probably very complicated story of obtaining rights?
It must have been a journey filled with treataruse traps, abominable abominations and gallons of coffee!
Since I own SS2 but have not played it yet... is there any reason for me to play these games in order, or does it not matter at all?
The promo email is adorable. Bought the game.
low rated
So GOG does f- all to get SS1 released and yet both the community and GOG themselves pretend like it was all thanks to them.
Great.
I can see why Night Dive isn't exactly rushing to get Strife released here.
I would like to say thanks Night Dive for all your work.

Oh, I remember the logs audio, so I must have played the CD version.
I kept the DOS resolution, however (the other mode was quite slow on my pc).
I hope that the EE maintained the MIDI option too..

Precisely! The CD version of that particular piece of music was a digitized track performed by composer Greg LoPiccolo's band Tribe. The floppy uses a much harsher-sounding midi track (which I personally much prefer to the Tribe-rendition and I think is more appropriate to the tone of the game).

Yup, also MIDI. Having tested both gog versions, I'd say they both have their advantages: Enhanced has smoother graphics and gameplay, Classic has superior audio playback.

jamyskis: Something to do with you being in Greece and the banking restrictions? Or have you been using PayPal without any problems even so?
The banking restrictions is the source of the taint.. the problem i mean. I heard the things will be back to normal soon though. I can use my card for purchases in Greece just fine - it's the "foreign purchases" use of it that brings the problem in the surface!
Thank you GOG Team!

So also the enhanced version music can (and should) be improved with using replacement General MIDI soundfonts, with e.g. VirtualMIDISynth?

What do you mean the Classic version has superior audio playback? I wouldn't expect an Enhanced version to have worse audio. :)
