L-look at you, hacker. A pathetic creature of meat and bone. Panting and sweating as you search for your wallet. How fast can you purchase a perfect, immortal game?

System Shock, the breakthrough FPS/RPG hybrid - one of the most influential video games ever produced - is back and enhanced, premiering DRM-free on GOG.com. Get 20% off the title, or 40% off if you already own System Shock 2.

On release, System Shock forever changed the face of action gaming - it ushered an era of storytelling, choices, and RPG elements unlike ever before - directly influencing all-time classics like Deus Ex and Bioshock.
Today, the legend returns in better shape than ever.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition now comes with official support for resolutions up to 1024x768 (compared to the original 640x480), and a native 854x480 widescreen mode. Gameplay is streamlined with a toggleable mouselook mode, including more intuitive inventory and item management. Combined with assorted bug-fixes and remappable controls, System Shock is now truly enhanced. Still, some gaming experiences are truly worth preserving, so you can also return to the authentic 90's gameplay with System Shock: Classic - ready for modern systems, completely unaltered in all other aspects, and available in both the CD and Floppy editions!

Join Stephen Kick (founder and CEO of Night Dive Studios), Daniel Grayshon (Lead Technician in charge of QA at Night Dive Studios) and Paul Neurath (creative Director at Looking Glass Studios, and industry veteran credited on System Shock 2, Thief, Neverwinter Nights and more) for an in-depth, roundtable discussion on the System Shock phenomenon and its many influences in game design to date - on Twitch.tv/GOGcom - September 23, 6:00 PM CET, 4:00 PM GMT, 9:00 AM PDT, 12:00 PM EDT.
With System Shock out of the way, the next most-demanded game is the first Diablo. Hopefully, Blizzard will make an effort to release the game (either here or on their site).
Wow, just wow. System Shock, Ultima7 and Ultima Underworld were the games that really got me hooked on gaming. Yeah, I was a gamer before (I am that old), but these games changed everything. Still got the original discs somewhere. Happy to see SS is now on gog.
Nice! And hope GOG can get Strife here in the future (I have in Steam but will gladly rebuy here)

JudasIscariot: Where are we pretending that this was entirely on us?
The "Your Wish is Our Command" e-mail.

mk47at: Oh. Sorry about that. You're right. It's even worse than Windows only. But there is still the posibilty that it could work on older Windows version if they used another compiler.

Edit: spelling.

Edit2: Is anyone adventurous enough to test if it is at least compatible with Wine?
avatar
JudasIscariot: I tested an internal build with Wine on Mint 17.2. This is the stock WINE configuration that comes with the OS, nothing sourced or added on my own and it worked out of the box. Your results may vary with different Wine versions etc. etc.
Thank you, Judas.

And everyone else that wrote something about this, too.

timppu: What do you mean the Classic version has superior audio playback? I wouldn't expect an Enhanced version to have worse audio. :)
The Enhanced version sounds a little bit more jittery, particularly during fast paced tracks (noticeable for example during the Cyberspace parts of the game).

What about it? I don't work on those emails myself.

I did experience the "no music" issue on my end so again, YMMV and all that :)

The entire tone of that e-mail is "Look what we did for you!".
First it starts out with "Your wish is our command" which heavily implies that GOG did the work.
And it ends with "You voted for it, now begins the horror" again implying that GOG checked the wishlist and did the work in bringing it to the store.
Checksum error with System SHock Enhanced Edition

"Checksum error on chunk 0, please contact support" using the GoG downloader (yes I know it won't be supported soon but I rather use it while we still can I don't want to use galaxy).

:( when this happened last with Defcon it took over a month to fix. I hope this is fixed soon.
Cool, now I can finally do a play-through of the games in order. :-)
Does anyone know who owns the rights to system shock 1 and 2?
Enhanced Edition?

Thank god I still have an original copy.

javihyuga: Is the enhanced edition a renaming of the portable version or has ND added something of their own?
avatar
JudasIscariot: It's a mix between System Shock Portable as some of the modders are involved and some Night Dive fixes.

Take a look here for specifics:

Seeing that thread mention Malba Tahan as responsible for much of the tech behind the Enhanced Edition, I couldn't help but smile.

As for System Shock released: AWESOME! The world is a little better and just now.

Also, read The Man Who Counted. It's utterly awesome.

yeah, thats really great ... for night dive ... i'm sure its worth 10 bucks

here is a little quote from kolya and no money from me night dive:

"""
Hello Larry,

I have removed the download of System Shock Portable, into which a whole community including myself have invested years of work.
This game was once created by a bunch of extremely smart people in Boston who favoured individual thinking and personal skills over capitalism and following the rules. Have you played it?

The laws that you are using now to make money from their and our work were once put in place to protect creative workers and those who invested in their endeavours to ensure that they get paid.
But your company never created anything. "Night Dive" is just a device to misuse the legal system and fill Stephen Kick's pockets.

Go get a real job, Larry. Do something that isn't just enough to pay the rent. Write. Draw. Create something. Be more than a leech.
And play System Shock.

Sincerely,
Nicolai "Kolya" Sandow
