amrit9037: Why classic edition has 3 times larger size than that of Enhanced edition?
Probably because it uses a cd ISO image which dosbox mounts, while the enhanced edition uses the files directly.
Did anyone else notice that the "TV Spot" extra was just a youtube rip?

I don't know if GOG has ever done this before but this seems exceedingly lazy.

htown1980: Out of interest, how much do you pay for a beer? I live in a fairly expensive town. A pint at a pub here costs around $10 - $12 AUD ($7 - $8 USD) .
In a pub mostly for poor students you pay 6.40 EUR for a liter beer. For SS1 you would pay 8.99 EUR without any discount.

With the 40% discount, the game costs me $8.59 AUD ($6 USD). I guess without the discount it would be around $14AUD ($10 USD).

For me, this game is worth a lot more than a beer :)
Since I'm also includet in quote I'll answer :)
For me, as I live in Poland in not such expensive town, typical beer (half liter) in grocery cost about 3-4 PLN (~$ 1USD) and in the typical pub about 5-7 PL ($1,50-2) and for SS1 in 40% discount I payed 22.26 PLN, without discount it would be around 38 PLN or 5-7 beers in a pub :) I think in more expensive pubs or at a local disco I would buy about 3-4 beers in a price of SS1 :)

I'm not saying than $10 is huge amount of money but IN POLAND for a 21 YEARS old game in DIGITAL distribiution $5,99 would be a much better deal.

Yeah, nothing beats cheap beer.
Can't speak much about beer because I never had any.

styggron: Checksum error with System SHock Enhanced Edition

"Checksum error on chunk 0, please contact support" using the GoG downloader (yes I know it won't be supported soon but I rather use it while we still can I don't want to use galaxy).

:( when this happened last with Defcon it took over a month to fix. I hope this is fixed soon.
Same here, but on chunk 9.
No OS X versioin :(. It looks like GOG don't do any more Mac DOS games. The only time they did a bunch was when they introduced Boxer into their ecosystem. Looks like no one plays on a Mac indeed. They would be all over the Mac versions if it were profitable :( SAD.

YaTEdiGo: THIS,

Is pretty ridiculous that even with a small old game that only we retro-lovers care about and probably isn´t going to make anyone rich, some of the "freedom for videogames" that actually means as you said "give me the game free", still complain about it.

Klumpen0815: He has a point though, that $10 is really expensive for a repackaging with mostly community made mods that even lacks a big chunk of possible support (Linux, WinXP, Mac).
Not intending to be antagonistic, but has this been confirmed? Was Night Dive's Windows wrapper/launcher entirely community made? I had the impression the mods were just for the DOS executable.

The Enhanced Edition is not a DOSBox game.

Huh?! Where have you been? All of their DOS D&D Gold Box releases have Mac/Linux versions. Night Dive's previous DOS release, Terra Nova, also had a Mac release (and that came out in June of this year).

The only major DOS releases in recent memory that have not had Mac versions on day one were the Elder Scrolls games and the DOOM/Quake games, which is really IMO a non-issue as (a) getting the former games to work on OS X through DOSBox is fairly common knowledge at this point, and (b) the latter games have many source ports on OS X, and extracting the data files for them is fairly easy.

GOG isn't trying to spite Mac users, nor has it "given up" on them. It's most likely that GOG hasn't fully cleared the legal rights needed to release Mac and Linux versions for these games.

And btw, the EE for System Shock works great in Wineskin on my Mac, and the CE should easily run in whatever Mac DOSBox environment you prefer.

The compatibility layer is called Shlink, it has been made by a modder. However, until this Enhanced Edition Shlick was unable to play music and had no support for resolutions other than the built-in.
https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=2123.0

The Enhanced Edition was made in cooperation with the modder, and while I have no proof of this, I would bet that Night Dive might have provided some financial incentive for getting Shlink up to the task. The Boxer standalone for Mac was also developed in cooperation with GOG.

apehater: night dive demand money for actually just buying a piece of paper, which confirms that they have the rights. thats not consistent, reasonable or fair, its just law. if you pay that money, it won't be used to create something like a successor, thats not sustainable.

and yes they sholdn't force kolya to remove that free download.

i'm not intending to discuss further, why night dive's shady attempt to force us to pay for something they had no hand in creating, fixing or enchancing and dare to demand 10 bucks for it, while it uses community made fixes.
avatar
Gnostic: Why it is unfair?

Night Dive went through all the effort to track down the rights owner and actually paying money for the rights
Why they should not charged for their efforts and money invested?

If I own a car, but let my sibling use it since I am not using it. Then when you buy the car from me, would it be fair if my sibling demanded that you let him continuing using it even though is you who pay for the car?

Besides they just ask to remove free download link to the base game, and he can link mods if the want to.
The price for the game is fine to me, but I think he had a point.
System Shock is remembered also because there's a community that kept that interest alive. That community, through modders, also produced mods that are the main reason why an enhanced edition was even possible. So it would be fair for the current rights holder that are capitalizing on those mods to leave the things as they were before, namely the free download. Modders were so kind to let them use their work, it would be wise to reciprocate. If someone wanted the game they would have took that already and I believe that the one interested in purchasing it won't be affected.

That would be true if Night Dive shut down the modding project entirely...but they didn't. They just asked them to stop effectively giving the game away for free. There's nothing stopping them from continuing to work on and distribute their mod and from what I've read, they're quite happy with the modders continuing to do their work.

Put another way, how does the base game no longer being freely available (and it arguably wasn't even theirs to give away to begin with) hurt or devalue the modders? Especially if they're still free to distribute and develop their work? If indeed NDS has provided some kind of monetary compensation for the developer of Shlink, as suggested above, then the right people have already been fairly compensated.
never played this game before.if its half as good as ss2 im gonna love it
edit.just bought it.This bundling and unbundling crap is starting to get me nervous.why is classic edition unbundeled from enhanched edition?why isnt it in enhanched edition as bonus as other similar games with that kind of content??
