Spec Ops: The Line is now available DRM-free. Get it 80% off until May 20th, 10pm UTC.

It’s been 6 months since Dubai was wiped off the map by a cataclysmic sandstorm. Thousands of lives were lost, including those of American soldiers sent to evacuate the city. Today, the city lies buried under sand, the world’s most opulent ruin. Now, a mysterious radio signal is picked-up from Dubai, and a Delta Recon Team is sent to infiltrate the city. Their mission is simple: Locate survivors and radio for Evac. What they find is a city in the grip of war. To save Dubai, they’ll have to find the man at the heart of its madness—Col. John Konrad.
Great game! I hope we'll get to see the older Spec Ops games here too.
Only played the 1998 original back in the day, Spec Ops: Rangers Lead the Way. I really liked it back then, and would love to play the others too.
Definitely not on par with Delta Force or Ghost Recon, but still enjoyable budget military shooters.
Own this gamne on Steam since ages. Imo one of the most thought provoking shooters so I just instabought it again without thinking a second. Highly recommended.

Crosmando: I remember this game, decent shooter but the way the story was told kinda ticked me off, ie the gameplay gives you no option but to commit an evil action to progress the game, and then the game tells you off after you do it, I mean wtf.
This was exactly the idea of the ones that made the story. You always have an option - you can stop playing ;)
I read an interview about this somewhere - will see if I can find it again.

I guess this was it - but DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED THE GAME - SPOILERS!!!

Such meta. So clever. Wow.

And the game is chock full of these little touches that seem designed to feel "profound" or "deep" or "subversive", but are actually rather adolescent and silly. One example: There's one scene where you get to eavesdrop on some enemies having a casual conversation. "What are you going to do after this is over?" - "Oh, I'll move back to the farm with Mary-Ann and start a family..." or whateverthefuck. Then, of course, the player blows their brains out. It's clever until you realise that this was literally a throwaway gag in Austin Powers. Whether knowingly or not, they took a joke from Austin Powers and present it here, completely po-faced, as an illustration on the horrors of war.

If the story being a carbon copy of Apocalypse Now was actually a meta-commentary on the derivative nature of video game stories, they get an A for effort, though.

Yeshu: It's not about the option but the fact that these options in games in general are pointles and hollow and are not realy choices.
If a developer says "Let's go make a badly designed game on purpose in order to make some kind of statement on bad design in military shooters!", I - as a player - don't go "Gee willikers, that sure is a clever statement on bad design in military shooters!", I go "Well, gee, this is a pretty badly designed game."

Well - it worked for me. This way of narrative os not for everybody but we should not discuss it here. Even if the game is not quite new there might still be some who did not play it yet.

Hustlefan: Manual is inside the game folder after install. I've selected to install the game in german, so i got the german manual.

Now this is a welcomed highlight to see on the front page. I still have this for PS3 as well as over at Steam and just made a purchase here as well. I remember playing this on the PS3 years ago and absolutely loving the story. With that in mind I replayed it on PC last fall and loved it just as much the second time through. However, much like a good movie, I found new ways to interpret the story which I didn't realize the first go-around and it has made me love this game even more. Thank you GOG and 2K for this release. It's truly a fantastic game in my mind and I'm more than happy to get a GOG copy for yet another play through.
A fairly well made console shooter with a story. It suffers from the usual console problems with overly narrow corridors and such but compared to others it is alright.
I think I will try tonight again to get past that part where I am stuck.

"Nice" release!
Another de-steamed game to add to the pile; insta-bought due to the price! ($30 IS steep, yet I blame the publisher for that)

Thanks gog for bringing it over here!

Precisely. Maybe someone will open a discussion thread on the game's subforum... looks pretty empty in there anyways.

It's definitely a game worth discussing, which already puts it a good notch above a lot of other games.

So we do agree in some point - even if not in all ;)
That's completely fine by me.

Cananas: without its multiplayer modes
avatar
Swedrami: As it was intended by the devs originally, by the way.
The devs never wanted Spec Ops The Line to have multiplayer, but had to tack it on because of 2K, iirc.
That is correct.

"According to Davis, while 2K Games was supportive of Yager and "took a hell of a lot of risk with the project", they insisted that the game have multiplayer components to boost the sales. This was a decision that Yager thought would hurt the game."
