zeogold: I'm pretty sure nobody played KQ3 when it came out played it without a walkthrough or calling Sierra's tipline. At least, not getting a perfect score.

It's a port, not a remaster.

snowkatt: i dont see what difference that makes
i paid for a homeport so there is no need for the game to want to murder me
arcade games were very populair back then, and i heard dont know ifs true games were tested by people who played so much times they evently tought the game was too easy so they cranked up the diffeculty
I had that problem with Albion - loved it for about 10 hours, the next 10 hours it was okay. Pretty much given up for now. The game had bugs that from the perspective of 2016-me are too absurd :P

Hey, I managed to finish Eye of the Beholder 1 this year - first time ever - without much... or any, can't remember exactly which, map-making notes. Usually I just wandered about hitting the direction keys. It got a bit frustrating a few times. But I found a lot of secrets and made my characters quite strong after beating lots of monsters, so I didn't mind too much.
So that is possible. The game world is large, but not gigantic.

timppu: Then again, I recall playing EOB2 and Lands of Lore through a long time ago without drawing maps, so maybe their maps were so easy to navigate even without a map... or possibly I sometimes used some premade maps by others? Not sure.
Lands of Lore has automap.

I beat Tekken 1 or 2 last year on PSVita. I think it was the first one... It was hard. There was much screaming and cursing. But I found a character that seemed good, remembered a few moves from the 90's (which was kinda spooky) and with lots and lots of playing, trying, learning moves, watching the opponent - I did it, beat the game. I wouldn't really call it impossible. A hard game, but the challenge made the victory so much better :P

hercufles: I sometimes wonder if im not the only one that has this problem, there are lots of games that i want to play and finish but are takes back by things about the game that are too chunky hard to understand, I would like to know if someone here in this community has the same problem and would want to tell it,
mine are.
eye of the beholder. it is diffecult to map out the dungeons.
ultima same problem.
Just go and watch someone else play it for you on Youlube. This was discussed the other day:

I'd love to play Ultima VII, Betrayal at Krondor and Dark Forces 2, but I can't get into them. Mostly due to issues with the emulation on modern OS though.

In the case of Ultima VII, I'm put off by the decision between DOSBox version and Exult, both of which come with their own downsides and are only approximating the original version, I think. Exult offers better ease-of-use options, but at least the sound seems messed up in both versions. Betrayal at Krondor has issues with sound emulation as well. There are certain fixes for it, but by the time I manage to get the game running more or less like it's supposed to be, I'm already quite frustrated and burnt out on it. And then the combat system seems unattractive and boring, but maybe that's just in the beginning. Dark Forces 2 has terrible mouse controls and a slight screen tearing or delay that makes me nauseous after a short while already (although I usually don't suffer from motion sickness in games). I assume that for a first time player like myself it would take some time to get accustomed to these old games anyway, so I don'tt feel like dealing with all these technical issues on top of that, before I even get to play them.

Another game in my library that I never got the chance to try, Soulbringer, is hard to play now, because it doesn't work on Win 8 anymore. :P

And IIRC Silver would interrupt spoken dialogue lines and there were some issues with the mouse combat, at least the last time I tried it.

Somewhat off-topic: I also found Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness impossible to play, but that's not due to its age but to terrible design decisions, like freezing the character whenever I get important messages like "Press Space to Jump" etc. and make me listen to those voiced comments in their entirety before I get to control the character again. I've played previous Tomb Raider games, thank you very much, and if I didn't want to listen to your tutorial comments, taking away my control of the character wouldn't make me more receptive to them either.

Nope, unfortunately EoB2 does not have automap (and is much larger than EoB1) and neither does EoB3.

-edit- there are some options and alternatives though, like the All-Seeing Eye for EoB 1 and 2, and modified Amiga AGA versions which apparently have automap.

skimmie: I do have issues with some of the older RPG leveling systems, such as in the original Bard's Tale, where you have to visit the Review Board to level up even if you have enough XP...
There is actually one advantage of this sort of leveling system: If you don't want to level up for whatever reason, you can simply choose not to level up; you don't have to worry about avoiding XP.

Also, this makes it easier to reload a poor level up (like one that boosts a useless stat, for example).
I mentioned this back when GOG released Mortal Kombat, I can't play those games for shit now and I used to rock them/.

I can't speak for any of you but the fact is, I've gotten older and my reflexes are shot, not to mention I simply can't button tap that quickly anymore.

Maybe I won't get that Mini-Nintendo when it comes out.

That's definitely true; constantly having to return to the surface for leveling up becomes highly annoying to me after a while though.
I'm not one for replaying certain sections of a game over and over. It's why I quit Zelda: Phantom hourglass among other games (the Temple you have to do ver and over again just ruined it for me)

Oh right, that explains it then. :) (I'm naturally talking about the first LoL game.)

I... am pretty sure it didn't, but maybe I remember wrong. EOB3 probably had one though. Easy to check, I guess.

hercufles: if there is a franchise with rpg's i always wanted to start with the first one.
I have a similar problem, but with very old series like Ultima, Might&Magic and Wizardry, I've decided to slip from that.

Old RPG games that are very long due to constant battles with countless mobs, especially if it's in form of random encounters. I can't play games like that anymore so while I loved Wizardry series back then and I'll keep great memories it belongs to the past.

Old RTS games with clunky UI

Actually, that won't work for early Wizardry. Considering computer versions only, you *have* to play Wizardry 1 before 2 or 3 as 2 and 3 lack the option to create characters; you *must* transfer your characters from Wizardry 1. Wizardry 4 can, in theory, be played first, but it is not recommended for various reasons. For example, there is a question late game whose answer is found in Wizardry 1, and is not guessable if you haven't played it.
