Thanks for the notice, what a work of art from fans, wow!!
If Nintendon't C/D's this then they are stupid.
Honestly it quite obvious they DGAF about Metroid anymore.

Part of me worries about a C&D from nintendo... but on the other hand this project has been around for a while. Multiple demo releases, and a little mini-game built on the engine called Confrontation.
If Nintendo was going to CD them I think it would have happened already.

The game itself is quite good. I barrelled through it earlier today and some last night.
Definately felt like a modernized Metroid 2. The layout and progression was mostly the same, but areas were tweaked and added to to make it nicely different.
It also has the mechanics of more modern games, like shinespark chaining, super missiles, power bombs, combining beams, and diagonal shooting.

Added areas and bosses are fun too.

It still suffers from linearity like 2 did, but outside of a complete map overhaul that would be hard to remove from a remake. (There is some added backtracking for 100% seekers, but still, mostly linear.)
get it before nintendo finds out about it
after playing for 3 or so hours and making it about halfway through the game, i can happily say that this game is absolutely great. it has the responsive range of motion of zero mission with the claustrophobic mood of super (this is even better in a few spots).
I'm just digging it because I've never played #2 but I've played the first one so many times I could do it in my sleep. Nice to have a little variation. :D

neurasthenya: - The fan game/romhack/mod title is using game-play elements Nintendo is already experimenting with or hasn’t released;

rampancy: So basically that means that Nintendo can shut your free fan game down for basically just being a game.
Well they already have the right to shut it down for using their IP. They just seem to be ok ignoring things they don't perceive a threat.
Just played it for about an hour. It's very well-done, although on my computer at least there is an occasional hitch in the framerate. I haven't played 2 in a long time but this seems pretty faithful to it, from what I remember.
Just a heads up:

Metroid Database (one of the few places that's hosting the game) got a DMCA from Nintendo, and they removed the download link. Although the other downloads links (MediaFire, FileDropper, and Torrent) as well as the main website are still up, but chances are they'll be taken down sometime later. So go ahead and download the game now if you're interested in playing it.

I never played the original Metroid 2, but so far I'm really impressed with this remake.

Unfortunately that appears to be the case. I searched around and here is the forum post from Metroid Database.

Maybe in hindsight, releasing this remake on the day Metroid hits its 30th Anniversary wasn't such a great idea. My only regret is that DoctorM64, the creator of AM2R, won't get a chance to polish the game. I'm sure he had to take a lot of shortcuts to release on the Anniversary.

Having actually played Metroid 2, I can say this is easily a massive improvement.

Except now that I have a map, I feel I'm missing powerups and have delved too deep due to my habits of playing Super Metroid and having learned a few breaks there.

Rather DCMA things, if I were in Nintendo's shoes and heard of projects like this making a buzz, I wouldn't swat them down. I'd extend a hand, and offer them a position, because as a company, any talent would be a useful asset, especially when compared to Sakamoto, the man who killed Metroid as a franchise.

Or Miyamoto, who has killed Star Fox and Paper Mario due to his meddling.

Fortunately the official website for the project still have the file, so I was able to get it!
I wasn't expecting Nintendo to act so quickly.
