UPDATE 22.04.2011:
We have uploaded a new version of the Downloader (0.9.0.1218). Please download it at your convenience and let us know if any of the problems you experienced earlier still persist.
Major changes include:
fixed problems with logging on,
the Downloader no longer attempts to move files after changing the destination folder,
you can now change the number of concurrent downloads (1 to 10) in the Downloader's options, in case you think the Downloader is overusing your connection.

The Enigmatic T hinted it during the conference and now we've prepared something of a sneak peek for you - an almost complete work-in-progress copy of our brand-new Downloader! No more Adobe AIR and, most importantly, corrupt downloads. Soon enough you'll be able to enjoy rock-solid downloads as fast as your connection can make them.

Try to "break" the new Downloader if you wish, by being naughty to it and turning off your Internet connection or something, but we're mostly interested in any bugs and comments related to normal use of the application. :)

Please keep chatter to a minimum - it will make it easier to filter out comments and bugs. :)

You can find the new Downloader here. Feel free to test it, or just use it for any game you may wish to get from us. Extract the .ZIP file, launch GOGDownloader.exe (PC only) and log onto your account in the Downloader.

To download a game, you need to make sure the Downloader is running, you are logged on and then open this kind of link in your browser:
gogdownloader://game_product_page_name , for instance gogdownloader://beneath_a_steel_sky
Please note that Chrome doesn't do a very good job at interpreting these links, so please use a different browser to test the new Downloader. This problem will be gone when we officially release the new Downloader the games get properly linked under My Account -> My Games page.

Of course you need to have the game you wish to download on your GOG.com account. I'm sure you can figure out how to create similar links, but here are some other examples:
Arcanum - gogdownloader://arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura
Baldur's Gate - gogdownloader://baldurs_gate_the_original_saga
Baldur's Gate 2 - gogdownloader://baldurs_gate_2_complete
Duke Nukem 3D - gogdownloader://duke_nukem_3d_atomic_edition
Fallout - gogdownloader://fallout
Fallout 2 - gogdownloader://fallout_2
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - gogdownloader://heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition
Master of Orion 1+2 - gogdownloader://master_of_orion_1_2

nice, will try it when I'm home :)
I got the attached message when I tried to change the download directory to the Windows 7 Downloads folder, i.e, C:\Users\PhoenixWright\Downloads.

But this thing is great news, guys! No more AIR! And I just reinstalled Windows, so now I won't have to poison it with that nonsense.

Do you have UAC enabled? Please try closing the Downloader (it will hide in the taskbar and you'll have to close it there) and relaunching it by right-clicking the executable and selecting Run as Administrator.
Edit: It just seems to be a Chrome thing. It worked fine in Firefox.

Maybe I'm just daft, but I'm still not understanding how I add things to the downloader. So say I want to download Fallout, which I own.

I get that I need to go to: gogdownloader://fallout but in what? A web browser? That doesn't seem to work and I see no way of adding it to the dowloader.

No UAC enabled, but running as administrator did the trick. Victory! Should have thought of that.

Actually, they should have thought of that.
Personally I view every application that has to be 'run as administrator' as a failure on the programmer's side, there are tons of applications that run just fine without that.
Especially something like a downloader.
Seems to be working fine. Had no trouble changing directory, didn't had to use the Run as Admin thing.
Worked fine here as well, no need for Admin thingy. Windows 7 not Vista though.
Tested on Win7 64bit with a single installer game, now trying with a multple installer game. No problems with changing the install folder. A notification for the remaining download time (actual and all files) would be fine

Yeah, Chrome randomly interprets such custom links put manually into an address bar like a Google search query instead of opening them like a webpage. It won't be a problem once the downloader is linked with My Account. In the meantime you might want to use Firefox or another browser if you're experiencing problems in typing this into Chrome.

The manual creation of those links is only necessary in this beta version, or will this be in the final version as well?

EDIT: Been trying to get the links to work in Chrome by making it a link in a forum post but the forum software seems to remove the colon after gogdownloader and also insists on adding http:// to the start. ._.

Actually, Destro just answered this one. :) The games will be properly linked under "Add to Downloader" and using the Downloader will be point-and-click simple. :)

Unfortunately the forum stubbornly changes the URLs to start with http://, so I couldn't create links for you. It would be a waste of effort to rewrite part of the forum to accommodate gogdownloader:// links, since this is just a test and all, though... ;)

Works fine for me. It seems unaffected by breaks in the connection. That's also the fastest I've seen my connection manage.

The ability to open the file through the downloader once it's done downloading would be nice.

The files I've downloaded look different to those I've downloaded in the past. Are these new, updated versions (new DOSbox configuration options and the like) or is it just how you've packaged them for this downloader?
