Serren: I'd rather have another Jedi Knight game. Fallen Order looks very simplified and automated compared to the combat systems in Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy.
Can't agree there. This game requires good use of dodging and parrying, and pretty nice lightsaber tactics. Especially on the higher than normal difficulty setting, which I highly recommend. All I remember doing in Outcast when not shooting was hacking and slashing, honestly. People seem really cynical about this game, either because it's EA or it's 2019 or a combination. It's really good though, and most people who've actually played it seem to agree.

It sounds like you just never learned how to play the Jedi Knight games because they had much more in-depth and controllable melee combat than Fallen Order. Or maybe it's because they really don't like it.

Hahaha... yeah man, I "never learned" how to play games I beat multiple times. You got me. Also you said "looks like," which tells me you haven't played Fallen Order. As someone who's played 10 hours of it, let me tell you that it's not some boring hack n' slash. It's very similar to Dark Souls in combat, requiring patience, timing, tactics and varying approaches.

LootHunter: Excuse me? You said that BioWare games "were meh at best". Not that you simply didn't like them.
Mafwek: Excuse me, since when people differentiate those two terms? Anyway, my question was clear enough. If you call Bioware games "meh at best", what story-driven RPG you consider not "meh at best"?

I hate Dark Souls and I hate cinematic games, but I love the Star Wars setting in video games and saw that there were no microtransactions in the game, so i decided to pick this up. I am LOVING it and I don't know why, considering that I don't enjoy the individual parts of it.
I love exploring the levels since they feel like real places (besides the obviously game-y slip and slide sections), I love the combat because it isn't slow and frustrating, I love fighting the different kinds of Stormtroopers and monsters, and I especially like the platforming. I wish it was more Prince of Persia!
The only thing I don't like is the contrived Dark Souls checkpoint system. Give me Quick save and Quick Load!! I am only five hours in, and so far there also hasn't been any Space combat. I wish I could actually fly to the planets you visit, not just select them.
Best part though is how customizable your lightsaber is. I am a prequel simpleton so I love cool, stupid lightsabers. In this game, you can customize the color, emitter, switch and sleeve of the saber, which is absolutely fantastic. It's sad that customization of any kind feels like a new concept now that I haven't been able to customize my characters in the past decade due to them being locked behind paywalls.
Love the game! agree that I would still place Jedi Knight games above this one, but fun is fun and I am having more fun than I have had in at least 12 months.

I don't like dark souls either specially contrived checkpoint system but from your post it seems like an interesting games. Customizing light saber is a nice touch, I think I will enjoy that too. What difficulty are you playing? Reports so far is that if you play on hard or hardest (don't know in-game names) it feels more like dark souls but can you change difficulty whenever? I hate locked in difficulties as I prefer a more dynamic experience.

I am playing on the second to last difficulty (Jedi Knight I think? I think Jedi Master is hardest) and it isn't especially hard. I have died here and there but I always knew what I did wrong and beat the enemy encounter on my second try. It's not easy though either, I guess it's just right (though I am excited to replay it on Jedi Master). And yes, you can change it in the options menu at any time, but I am more inclined to start a fresh new game on new difficulties.

Yeah the Star Wars setting goes a long way for me. This isn't the type of game I usually play, and is probably the first "controller game" I've played this year, but it's so well done and the setting is so good, it ropes you in. And yeah I'm also playing on the difficulty setting one up from normal, and it feels very balanced and engaging. Difficult enough to require attention and make you happy to get to the next checkpoint, but without being annoying.

LootHunter: Since people learned the difference between objective and subjective.
Anyway, my question was clear enough. If you call Bioware games "meh at best", what story-driven RPG you consider not "meh at best"?
If people (and you) are trying to pass qualitative statements as objective, they (and you) clearly haven't learn the difference. Anyway, my question was clear enough. If you call Bioware games "meh at best", what story-driven RPG you consider not "meh at best"?
This one is clear enough. I consider Fallouts (with distinction that Bethesda ones are crap, but fit definition since they aren't meh at best); Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines; KotOR 2; Planescape: Torment; Grandia 2 etc.

I would like to say it's more than just the Star Wars setting. There is something about the way the exploration is handled, with the temples and their puzzles, the platforming, application of force abilities in general, and the fact that the mechanics are very simple and clearly explained. It's a good soup of usual AAA ingredients, which i usually look down on but can't help but enjoy this time. Oh, and you mentioned controllers. I know you mean it's a typical console-designed game in general, but I was shocked to see how well the game plays with K&M.

StingingVelvet: Hahaha... yeah man, I "never learned" how to play games I beat multiple times. You got me.
You finished the single player portion and believe you know how to play. Try flailing around on a JO or JA server (there are still a few populated ones left, even 16 years later) and see how quickly you lose. There were lots of newbies with the same mentality. They had played through SP by button mashing and spamming kata, then thought they were totally bad-ass and going to mess up people in MP doing the same, only to end up badly losing every single fight they picked with an experienced player. It sounds as though you haven't even scratched the surface of how deep the gameplay in the Jedi Knight games are. I'm quite out of practise but let me know if you'd like to duel a few rounds in JA some time. I'd be happy to demonstrate just how much you "learned" beating single player multiple times.
StingingVelvet: Also you said "looks like," which tells me you haven't played Fallen Order. As someone who's played 10 hours of it, let me tell you that it's not some boring hack n' slash. It's very similar to Dark Souls in combat, requiring patience, timing, tactics and varying approaches.
I don't have to play it to know I won't like it because, contrary to what you seem to believe, it's possible to infer things with observable data. People accurately do it all of the time and I'm surprised you made it this far in life without understanding that. If I say "I won't like drinking the sludge from a septic tank", would you then insinuate that my statement is invalid because I never had? I've seen a friend play on PS4 and I've seen videos for the game, and it looks highly simplified, with button prompts and automatic combos in mostly (only?) one-on-one sabre fights. It doesn't look like you can kill multiple enemies with a single swing or combo and the enemies seem to be of the honourable, 80s action film variety in that they stand around and only attack one (or maybe two) at a time.
I have also seen the control layouts and know that Fallen Order uses dedicated buttons to automatically block and automatically dodge, which definitely means gameplay is simplified in relation to the JK games. It doesn't seem that you actually (manually) dodge, block/parry, counter, put together your own freeform combos or change stances on-the-fly as you do in JO and JA, among other shortcomings I noticed in comparison.
FYI, I've played Dark Souls/style games and have never been impressed or had fun. They are games of rote memorisation of enemy telegraphs and patterns, not skill or improvisation. They feel like modern day incarnations of Dragon's Lair.

I haven't played Dragon's Lair, but Dark Souls definitely have some commonality with original Prince of Persia.
