HomerSimpson: Perhaps there's a statute of limitations in regards to the amount of time a post is valid for affecting rep. Just how old was the most recent post you used in Namur's sample?
Indeed, that is one of the possible explanations for the lack of effect so I have plans to test that in the future.

The posts I was looking at were from 2009/2010 so very, very old posts :)
I'm almost in favor of getting rid of the - button altogether and replace it with a hide feature. Those who put in helpful posts and have active forum activity will get a boost in rep more quickly. Those who do not like a post don't have to see it and it won't hurt the posters reps and neuter the ability to target a user unfairly. Of course leave in the report as spam feature for spam or abusive posts.

If there is a need to see how active someone is the forums then put in a post counter to keep track of how many posts someone has made.

xyem: We've had a couple of people in the past make multiple accounts to increase their influence over the rep system..

Is that what you mean?
avatar
jamotide: No we were talking about some guy spending hours to make 100 accounts to downrep one guy and how thats a crazy conspiracy theory. Then you said it already happened. So lets hear it.
GR has been mentioned several times in this thread...

If you want to test again, you can try again with some of mine more recent posts.

xyem: I'll post the results of the next round of testing once I have organised it.

Namur: Thanks for sharing your findings xyem and for doing all the leg work of the experiment as well.
Hey, please, on emore minute ! It's time for the feedback, would you mind answering those simple questions :
1) Do you feel any numbness in the upper part of your lungs ?
2) Did the whole experience felt quite satisfactory ? Or was it completely not unpleasant ?
3) Did you manifest any form of animosity towards apes recently ?

GameRager - a semi-mythological older user. He is not so active on the forum anymore.

He had a lot of rep discussions going on, and in one instance it was found out that he created a lot of alts to manipulate his own rep. He was semi-banned by GoG over it. He came back later as a reformed character. He is alright, actually, but has a bit of OCD.
Ok so it is hardly surprising that someone would spend a few minutes to raise his own rep a bit to get free stuff from some giveaway. Thats what you meant by "it already happened", Xyem? No wonder you dodged the question for a precedent so much! We were talking about your crazy conspiracy theory of one guy spending hours to make 100 accounts just to lower someone elses rep a little.

The whole GR fiasco was pretty big. Big enough for GOG to temporary ban him and to change how rep works (with now only being able to raise or go down 5 points a day). Don't play it down.

Of course it's not what's happening here, but the possibility, however small, exists.

Why is everybody always talking about 100 accounts? Wouldn't five accounts be enough to lower someone's rep? As far as I remember it needs five downreps of a post to show it as low rated with the user loosing one point of his/her reputation.

Well say you want to have one of your posts up voted. But 20 people just down voted you. Now you need 25 accounts to get that 1 point of rep.

The other way was to post bogus question with alt accounts, answer with your main, mark that answer as correct and presto +5 rep.

With the limited rep you can win/lose per day this idiotic behavior was somewhat curbed.

Perhaps you should wait for me to actually respond before jumping to (incorrect) conclusions?

No, I wasn't referring to when he used his alts to raise his own rep, I'm referring to when he used his alts to downrate other people. Surprise! Funny how that works, isn't it?

Clearly, you have already decided that I am wrong and are being selective and biased. You rejected my claims outright (rather than ask for evidence) and then immediately accept what someone else says as truth because they only mentioned the part that supports your predetermined opinion. Guess what! He also used them to circumvent his forum ban! amok didn't mention that either but that happened too.

And for the record, I wasn't dodging the question, I was trying to figure out what you were referring to so I could answer it. I could have dodged the question by ignoring you..
