X Rebirth and Home of Light - Complete Edition, the vast sci-fi simulations where you go into space adventures that will deeply affect the universe, are available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with a 50% launch discount.

The future is a scary place but one rife with opportunities for daring spacefarers. As the universe realigns itself, preparing for the upcoming changes looming on the horizon, our young protagonist and his female ally will set out seeking adventure aboard their ramshackle spaceship, unaware of the deep impact they will have on the events already set in motion.

X Rebirth is a huge sandbox, which allows you to make a fortune by trading or fighting, and eventually even build your own empire which will harbor an abundance of resources or bolster your military prowess. After a rocky release, it has come a long way and now X-Rebirth: Home of Light opens up the universe even further, bringing new missions, new enemies, and new weapons with which to conquer them. The Complete Edition also features the Teladi Outpost DLC, where you get to venture into a dangerous station teeming with smugglers, pirates and other space troublemakers, that will help or hinder you on your way to master the endless galaxy.

Seize your rightful opportunities in the sandbox galaxy of X Rebirth, DRM-free on GOG.com. For an even more varied adventure, consider picking up the all-inclusive Home of Light - Complete Edition, also going for 50% off. Or upgrade your universe later, with a 20% discount.
The launch discounts will last until February 29, 2:59 PM GMT.
Why are the expansions so much ? They cost more than the base game ! :( :(

Maybe I should just get the base game and wait for the expansions to be on sale ? Getting the full pack even at 50% off is too much I fear.

I guess Steam discounting the game even more than you guys means they are now considering GOG a direct competitor. Up until now I never thought they did consider anyone a threat.

Steam borrowed many ideas from GOG's sales. They always keep an eye on what GOG (and other companies, like Twitch) is doing.
Movies appeared on Steam only after GOG implemented this idea.

Isn't that just the developers putting it on sale?

blotunga: Not really, it's more like a space sim with management.

IAmSinistar: Ah, thanks, I think I grasp it now. Might hold off for a bit then. Probably need a more powerful PC anyway. :P
It's a revival of a long running series (hence the 'rebirth' part)
The first one is here:

Which should be lighter on your wallet and computer specs if you're still interested...

I would start with the X3 Terran Warpack, but yeah Rebirth is more like X-BTF than X3. Now it's better than it was at release, but you still have only one flyable ship.

Yah, I have the original X series. Had it on CD back in the day too. Good stuff, though ages since I fired it up. I was curious as to how much this hewed to the original versus diverged from it. But it's still something that would be purchased later anyway, given the specs. :)

I think you should go directly for the Complete version. Don't get the base + expansions.

Yeah, you need a good machine. On my old laptop with GTX460m it really struggles. Only on the 980m it really shines.

Why do people continue to believe that the distributor has a say in what goes on sale where, whether that be Valve or GoG or anyone else?

Valve considers GoG a threat the same way an aircraft carrier considers a tugboat a threat. Don't feel bad, they think of everyone else like that too.

Sorry, base + expansions is just way too expensive. Base is just barely doable as is but the expansions upgrade cost MORE than the base game which is just nuts. Expansions should be maybe $5 - $9 but they are MORE than the base.

Even at 50% off base+expansions way too much. The cost of the expansions blow everything out even in the whole pack. :( :(
expansion upgrade is only 19% discount compared to base being 50% off that is why there's a large difference in prices...

just saying....

cheaper to buy the complete edition as it works out at £17.29 if you take into account the store credit ...
but then it does not include the music...

so i will pass for now :)

I think you missed the link to the "Complete" version. That's $25 and has both expansions + the base game. It's always better to get the "Complete" editions than to buy game + dlc separately.

"Does X Rebirth support head-tracking devices (such as TrackIR?

No"

That's a show-stopper for me in 2016 for a space game with a cockpit.

Nope I didn't miss the link at all. If you read what I wrote above, I said getting the full pack for 50% off is still way too much. But if you want to get them separate the expansions are more than the base game !!! This is my point. Together as a complete edition is almost $30 waaaaay too much (Yes almost $30, remember the world is not the US, other countries use the $ too ;) ). This is with a 50% discount too !!! So taking that, looking at the base game alone, it is again the expansions that blow it all out of the water. Should be $15 for the complete edition not almost $30.

So overall looks like I need to wait for a 70+% discount for complete edition before getting this one, even though I have all the others. :(

It still stands though that the price of the expansion blows it all out of the water because rebirth alone is on the borderline of being too expensive just on its own even with the discount :(

Ok, i misunderstood then. Of course you can wait. On the other hand i spent hundreds if not thousands of hours with the X series so taking that into account, it's not that much.
