X Rebirth and Home of Light - Complete Edition, the vast sci-fi simulations where you go into space adventures that will deeply affect the universe, are available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with a 50% launch discount.

The future is a scary place but one rife with opportunities for daring spacefarers. As the universe realigns itself, preparing for the upcoming changes looming on the horizon, our young protagonist and his female ally will set out seeking adventure aboard their ramshackle spaceship, unaware of the deep impact they will have on the events already set in motion.

X Rebirth is a huge sandbox, which allows you to make a fortune by trading or fighting, and eventually even build your own empire which will harbor an abundance of resources or bolster your military prowess. After a rocky release, it has come a long way and now X-Rebirth: Home of Light opens up the universe even further, bringing new missions, new enemies, and new weapons with which to conquer them. The Complete Edition also features the Teladi Outpost DLC, where you get to venture into a dangerous station teeming with smugglers, pirates and other space troublemakers, that will help or hinder you on your way to master the endless galaxy.

Seize your rightful opportunities in the sandbox galaxy of X Rebirth, DRM-free on GOG.com. For an even more varied adventure, consider picking up the all-inclusive Home of Light - Complete Edition, also going for 50% off. Or upgrade your universe later, with a 20% discount.
The launch discounts will last until February 29, 2:59 PM GMT.

mattymuc: So this is not the Collector's Edition with Soundtracks?
Gotta love it when "Complete Edition" isn't even.

Niggles: If this is a space sim, do you get a choice or possibility of buying other ships in the game at some point?
You do, but in Rebirth (as opposed to the earlier games except the first one) you can't fly those other ships yourself, only control them via commands.

Konrad: The game got kinda slaughtered at launch, but the 4.0 patch (released just now) and the Home of Light expansion are supposed to make huge improvements to the whole thing.

Here's hoping, I'm waiting to get home and play it finally.

book99: ^^This. It has changed a lot since launch. These devs don't abandon their games.
Is it still just one ship? Is the galaxy actually populated? Those were the two big things that prevented me from getting this game.
Superb when devs release an unpolished game then later sharp some edges and finally deliver a cool dlc, something like "hey we 'kinda' screwed up the series a little but here's our gift to you: our magnum opus, kids" ;P

By the way, when you see reviews posted the day a game comes out here, especially in less than an hour, feel free to thumb them down automatically.

On a normal day I'd jump right in, but it's not a normal day. It's the day before Stardew Valley! Must ponder for at least a few more minutes...
Wasn't this game, like completely terrible compared to the old X games?
Good lord. That game was total shit. you cant even trade effectively without scanning the station for discounts which makes no fucking sense.

Heres a review from Mack's "Worth a Buy"

I love X - and this sounds amazing... but the Add-on DLC.. is it worth it? usually Egosoft combines everything in a single game version...

seeing the DLC not part of the main package makes me think its not good enough to combine like they always have.
Oh, it`s that piece of crap. Biggest disappointment I ever preordered as a collector`s edition.

I don`t care if they patched that junker to be called a viable game afterwards. It was just a real kick in the nuts for every buyer of the first release. Something I won`t forget.
It's nice to have it here, but I'll stick to playing X3: Albion Prelude. IMHO some of the design choices made for X: Rebirth were steps taken in the wrong direction for most die-hard X series fans.

If you haven't played any other X game before though, you might find that it agrees with you.
Unless it was fixed, wasn't another ridiculous thing that was done was you actually had to dock and then go walk inside the stations to trade instead of earlier games where the trade interface immediately pops up as soon as you dock? There is a hilarious lets play youtube video out there where the guy goes off on this stuff.

Fairfox: Eeeee, space! No-deffo-no. Or deffno. Plus bad space! Deffno(mnomnom).

I think not. But thank thee for the things of the thing(s).
I believe you're supposed to take the little round orange-ish tablets with food, otherwise they don't take effect and the voices come back. : ]

I was merely going to suggest Fairfox continue to read the surrealist authors they have been reading because that stuff above is gold.
