Time is (of) the essence

Braid, the subversive, time-manipulating platformer with the evocative story, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 50% launch discount.

It's been played, studied, and thoroughly discussed. Some praise its brilliant time-bending mechanics that make each level a complex gauntlet of puzzle-platforming delight. Others debate the deliberately obscure story that deals with personal redemption, broader philosophical themes, and meta-commentary on gaming's conventions.

Everybody recognises it as a masterfully crafted experience that put Jonathan Blow in the spotlight and helped usher the golden age of indies. If you haven't tried it, now is your chance to turn back time and give it a spin. Your future self will surely thank you for it.

Catch up on a timeless classic and untangle the brilliant challenges of Braid, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% discount will last until May 18, 12:59 PM UTC.

In the press:
"Diabolically clever and incredibly rewarding" - Giant Bomb
"Beautiful, entertaining, and inspiring" - Eurogamer
"An instant indie classic" - Total PC Gaming

Tyrrhia: I was going to reply to your post in the other thread]your post in the other thread, but it's more on-topic, here.

Why should a game have its price reduced just because it's been bundled (and it's only been bundled three / four times─according to a wiki site / a site that records price changes─at the time when bundles weren't everywhere)? A sale doesn't reduce the value of a game, it doesn't remove any content; it just makes you able to buy it for less.

And the fact that it is old shouldn't really matter, at least in this case, since this particular game has aged really well.

RWarehall: Those 4 bundles did sell over 100,000 copies each...
Humble Indie Bundle 2 (for as little as 1 cent) [232,855 bundles sold]
Humble Indie Bundle 3 (for as little as 1 cent) [372,399 bundles sold]
Humble Indie Bundle V (for Beat the Average) [599,003 bundles sold] - unclear how many were BTA
Humble Indie Bundle - All-Stars (for BTA) no sales data - ran a little over $4 BTA tier.

Plus, it's been on sale at $2.48 as recently as May 2nd
And it's $9.99 standard price on Xbox Live. If he can afford to sell it for $9.99 there, why $14.99 for the PC version?

I don't really see a connection. Yes, the game sold huge amounts via bundles, but why should that fact diminish its price and value? *

It's like a normal sale, some games go for 85% off (even such "big" games as Shadow Warrior), but they retain the same full price as before, after the promotion ends. And they're still worth the same. Consider bundles like extreme sales.

* (OK for people who already bought it somewhere else since you might not want to pay more than you already did. But new players?)

PaterAlf: Seven-year-old "Braid" with a 50% discount and heavy regionally pricing for $8.56? While the full price on Humble Store is €8.00?

Here is my reaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLsEcljjYYo
This is just a bad case of ripping off GOG customers. :/
"You want my game on GOG? Sure thing, just pay a few bucks more than at the Humble Store for this honor".

And regarding the comments about comparing Shovel Knight with Braid - Yep, it's indeed not a good comparison but tbh i don't remember that much about Braid. I briefly played it a few years ago and mostly remember that it's a platformer that didn't appeal to me. :D

FTFY. The game costs $10 on GamersGate/Humble Store and it used to cost $10 on Desura when the site was still active.

Pre-post edit: Now I see. The developer retroactively increased the game's price on Steam from $10 to $15 in October. I wouldn't be surprised if a price increase will eventually occur on other stores.

I am happy that Braid finally made it here, although as other users have said I find the price a bit too high. I will wait for a sale.
Just the other day I was thinking "why hasn't Braid shown up on GOG? It appeared everywhere else years ago and was DRM-free". And then here it is, finally...with a higher asking price (non-sale) than almost everywhere else.

The pricing is one thing, but the fact that GOG was one of the LAST places where the game would be released with a higher base price point? Call me cynical but as a GOG user I feel this is an insult to gamers who had yet to purchase the X360/PS3/Steam/Desura/HiB/Heaven Knows Wherever Else.

Yes, adding new games to the GOG catalogue is great, but we don't need games like this if developers treat the service with what seems to be contempt. As many of you have previously stated, we should vote with our wallets. Don't reward such practices with your $$$. Check your wishlists for other games instead.

hyperagathon: In addition, I don't know any other such game that employed the time manipulation mechanic.
Might want to try Chronology. It's pretty short, but a nice game.

GabiMoro: To bad almost everybody has it.
Well, there will be new gamers who don't have it yet, so one more store to buy it from, I guess.

Yeah I have the DRM-free Humble Bundle version too, so I guess this is not high on my wishlist to rebuy. I haven't played it yet though, wait I think I once installed it and played for a minute or so...
Good game, ridiculous pricing. I would have expected it to enter GOG with a 85-90% sale.

IAmSinistar: Nice that it finally made it here, though it feels a bit like "well, we've milked every other avenue of profit for this game, so those lousy DRM-free types can have it now". May pick it up in a sale, though.
Exactly how I feel as well.
I assume that it's so late coming to GOG because when it was still new and profitable GOG wasn't selling indies, and it's only arriving now because Number None is releasing The Witness so they're already going through the process of negotiating with all the sales channels. As for pricing - well we're aware from Phil Fish that Humble gives developers a better deal than GOG or Steam, perhaps Blow was compensating, or maybe he doesn't really care if any copies get sold here. Odd, but welcome to the free market.

On an unrelated note, I got this game with Humble Indie Bundle 3 and though it was short, it was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've had. Obviously, reading the comments here, it's not for everyone, but to some of us it's a game worth every penny (even if we didn't pay much for it).
Let's not forget it's good old game by now ☺

It's probably also a sop to make the asking price of The Witness more palatable. Suddenly our money matters now. ~_~

Yes it is, so thats a very good thing.

The less 'funny' thing is, i just found out that Braid soundtrack is 4.95 euros at gamersgate
game is drm free at 8.95 euro so thats 13.90 euros thats 1euro 5 cents cheaper

I know most of the games GG has , but tbh i didn't know they had Braid and Braid soundtrack, drm free....
Anyway i have the game already.
Imo, playing Braid is obligatory in any gamers history. Great controls, great gameplay, great sound and music and even story - which for a plattaformer I don't think it's all too necessary.

But this is also obligatory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc26EKhZNyM !
Sometimes the game feels way too much "above the mere mortals" lol.
