Time is (of) the essence

Braid, the subversive, time-manipulating platformer with the evocative story, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com, with a 50% launch discount.

It's been played, studied, and thoroughly discussed. Some praise its brilliant time-bending mechanics that make each level a complex gauntlet of puzzle-platforming delight. Others debate the deliberately obscure story that deals with personal redemption, broader philosophical themes, and meta-commentary on gaming's conventions.

Everybody recognises it as a masterfully crafted experience that put Jonathan Blow in the spotlight and helped usher the golden age of indies. If you haven't tried it, now is your chance to turn back time and give it a spin. Your future self will surely thank you for it.

Catch up on a timeless classic and untangle the brilliant challenges of Braid, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% discount will last until May 18, 12:59 PM UTC.

In the press:
"Diabolically clever and incredibly rewarding" - Giant Bomb
"Beautiful, entertaining, and inspiring" - Eurogamer
"An instant indie classic" - Total PC Gaming
It's a good game. I'll have to dig out my disk of it. Easily worth the $5 I paid for it five years ago.

Edit: Buy it on Humble instead. As it has been pointed out, it's base price is $5 cheaper.

rgnrk: You don't have to compare it with Terraria when you can compare it with HumbleBundle's release of Braid, which has a base price for me of €9, and it's also DRM-Free. Does this version have any extras that I don't know of? Because the price difference is a bit too much.
I just checked and you're right: it's about 9 Euro on Humble, so this is essentially a fake "discount". Don't know whether GOG or the game creator/owner is to be blamed for that, but it definitely makes me even less inclined to pick up a copy.

Tarm: Great. There goes a whole bunch of forum drama down the drain. :(

Is that a promise? ; ))

But I was used to this one. This feels like when a subplot suddenly and abruptly ends in a TV show. :/

rgnrk: Or maybe people don't like it but like to gloat about about how easily they beat it :P
The game wasn't too short. At least not shorter that many other puzzle platformers. And please, enlighten me about real puzzle platformers. You know, long and difficult ones. Brain cell difficult, not skill difficult. Because I don't think there can be many difficult puzzles in that format, as there are not all that many things to try and combine.
That I remember right now without checking, Limbo, The Cave or Never Alone all fall into the same genre and are as short and probably easier.
"A Boy and his Blob" is pretty nice, if you haven't tried it. Or the Escape Goat games, but those also tend to be based more on skill and timing, rather than complex puzzle solutions.
Braid? Is that the game where every level ends with: "I'm sorry Gog, but May 17th is in another week"?

CharlesGrey: Hm, I'm among the few(?) who still haven't tried this one, but at the current price, I'm not sure I'm willing to. It might well be worth it, but given how old the game is, and how often it's been discounted, bundled and likely given away for "free" since its original release, a base price of 17+ Euro seems a bit silly. Guess I'll wait for a better discount.

( Just for comparison: The equally praised and successful indie title Terraria has about half the base price, and when it was introduced here on GOG, it came at, what... an 80% release discount or something like that? )
Yes, in fact it is that good and even better. You really have to think out of the box on this one and it is lots of fun. But the price is a shocker. I bought my retail DRM free copy for 5 Euro brandnew and sealed. So no, no luck with me here.

tinyE: Looks really cool but it also looks like I have nowhere near the brain cells needed to play it.

HiPhish: I beat it in like on or two sittings. It was too short and too easy to even qualify as a puzzle game, there were just one or two puzzles where I actually had to stop and think to solve them. I guess people like this game because it makes them feel smarter than they actually are. Braid started the whole trend of pretentious indie games.
And did you manage to get all those stars too?

I'm surprised it took so long. It was out on HB for years already.

rgnrk: There are games for everyone. I own both, and I liked Braid and couldn't get into Shovel Knight. Not that I think Shovel Knight is actually a puzzle platformer and both games could really be compared, but...
Agreed, SK and Braid aren't the same subgenre, and if I'm out to play a puzzle platformer, I sure don't want to play a classic or action or run-and-gun or metroidvania or some other type of 2D side-scrolling game.

In addition, I don't know any other such game that employed the time manipulation mechanic. I guess everyone was a little shy to copy Braid in that respect during the Great Indie Puzzle Platformer Deluge that it helped to kickstart.
At last, Braid! Glad to see this here, GOG indie department should be a little more complete now and another title off of Barry's wishlist.. :)
Nice to see both Braid and The Witness finally on GOG.
Would be an instabuy if I did not have it already.

I probably buy it again if I see it in a sale, though.

Can't wait :P

adaliabooks: I was about to make a joke about telling you they were here but I see you were too quick for me XD
Well, yeah, he saw you posting, so he held the space bar down long enough to go back and get the first post. Very apropos, also. I'll see if I can get in on that.

Now, now, Games For Windows DRM (GFW DRM) is only for the games for sale through GOG's portal in the Windows Store.

DRM free games through a (Windows|Mac) store App? *ugh* I think I'm going to be sick!

I'm sorry I said that. I hope you're not planning anything like that for the future.

You're correct, this game arrived on GOG at the MSRPfSP (Manufacturer's Suggested Ripoff Price for Stupid People), with even the 50% discount bringing it down to "Pay $2 more than the non-discount price should be".

It's a good (according to many; I thought it was sort of meh), short game, now several years old, that's been bundled and put on sale many times. Wait for it to be $5 or less.
