ariaspi: High Resolution Textures
avatar
WinterSnowfall: On a side note, don't you just love ambiguous adjectives that will not age well? :P

The game's default textures are already "High Resolution" for most people these days, which is why the base game is so ridiculously huge in the first place, so the naming could have been better.
Yeah, probably "4K Textures" would've been the better term. I assume the default ones are for 1080p.
Wow. GOG is REALLY listening to our wishes recently, there's no denying.

Thank you GOG for bringing this game here too. Never did I ecpect that this would follow so soon after the first one ... of course thi will be an instabuy especially with this great launch discount :)

Well, there's no direct correlation between texture size and resolution (of course there is one in terms of quality when you design a game, but there's no such thing as "4K textures" per se), and I suspect even the default textures on their highest setting would look pretty good @4K.

Now if you want to sit 30cm away from your 4K or dare I say 8K monitor and admire a highly detailed bit of drool in the corner of an orc's mouth, then you certainly will need the "High Resolution" texture pack :P.

I didn't expect to see a game larger than 2077 here.

I know that, but what would be the proper term for them? They usually go up to 2048x2048, at least that's what I've seen on some .dds textures for somewhat older games.

I'm hardly an authority on the subject, but if it were me, I'd call them "UHD-optimized textures" or something of the sort.

Sounds about right from what I'm aware as well. Of course not all textures need to be that high-rez, but the more detailed ones cap out at 2048 squared.

P.S.: You'll have mips for them anyway, so only the max shipped size is relevant and they will get scaled down depending on your resolution and/or graphical settings.

That's out of date info; 2048x2048 is pretty old-school and low-res. Modern cards (even integrated graphics) do up to 16384x16384. It depends how you use them; you're not likely to use 16K^2 for a single wall texture or something. Generally larger sizes are used for texture atlases, such as for characters, where you have all the face/skin/clothes/etc. images packed into a single texture. If you can avoid having to make multiple texture fetches for one object that's generally better for performance.

The subject was, I quote "on some .dds textures for somewhat older games". I'm aware modern GPUs support a lot more. I was thinking back to the hay day of 1080p, though I suppose even 4096 was not that uncommon back then.

Very true, texture atlases are very much a thing.

Nice to see it here for people that want it! Congrats and thanks GOG and WB!

wolfsite: Wow, this was a quick turnaround.

Mortal Kombat 9 is probably too much to ask for due to licensing issues but maybe WB could bring Injustice: Gods Among Us over.
What was licensed in 9?

MK2011 is the next most-voted MK game and apparently that's the one that had Freddy Krueger. If that's the only legal issue holding back a release (assuming GOG could convince WB to re-release of course), my hope is GOG could just deactivate his ability to be used. But I imagine the bigger issue is the technical matters involved with online multiplayer, and WB not wanting to port spend resources porting it to Galaxy and whatnot.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 would be the next (uncompleted) wishlist entry at almost 700 votes. Had a Windows version, I imagine there could be challenging technical issues.

FEAR 3 has 1100+ votes and would be nice, maybe GOG won't bring it without co-op though? Area 51 2005 FPS probably has legal problems with the voice work sadly; maybe BlackSite: Area 51 doesn't. There's also Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and Area 51 (1995).

Mortal Kombat 9 is Mortal Kombat 2011, so the Freddy Krueger license may be the issue. Also, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 never had a PC port but the updated version, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, is already on GOG.

Not everyone who wants it here will find this release acceptable and buyable. I don't. I want it here and with full feature parity, including Achievements.

I was excited for that to happen when news of this game coming here for October leaked last week, and now that I realized it lacks feature parity, my excitement has soured into feeling deflated instead.

And now I'll be stuck unable to complete this series like I wanted to do, as I bought the first one the other month with the reasonable expectation in mind that its sequel would eventually come here and with full feature parity, same as the first one has.

In hindsight, I wish I never bought the first one either so as I could have avoided investing any money or time or energy into this series and consequently feeling deflated now as a result of this surprising & shocking lack of feature parity for the GOG version of Shadow of War.

"Mortal Kombat 9 is Mortal Kombat 2011" - Oh haha :P

I looked at Wikipedia and it mentioned "Windows" for UMK3, but maybe that was referring to Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Mortal_Kombat_3#Mortal_Kombat_Arcade_Kollection

...
Life isn't fair and GOG has very little leverage, there's not much money to be made here. Achievements would have been nice but I think most people here just want a DRM-free copy of the game. If I'm wrong about that, okay, nobody's obligated to buy it of course, but I don't think I'm wrong. :P

edit: the above said, it is somewhat surprising not to see Achievements since those seemed pretty easy to port.

So I guess with my 24" 1080p monitor there's no need to download the additional GB then? The game is already unbelievable big ...

To each his own, but I certainly don't plan to - I'm also going to play it @1080p. As for the 4K cinematics, meh... really not worth the extra size, IMHO.
