Strijkbout: Superhero movies, I'll die of boredom.
Oh, and Star Wars.
I could also have named Star Wars. During all of primary school and most of highschool I stayed away from anything Star Wars related. I was a full out contrarian, hating Star Wars simply simply because it was so popular. Not that I would've admitted it to myself back then of course. Deep down I think I was afraid of watching it, to perhaps enjoy it and become part of the Star Wars mob myself.
So it's easy now to vividly remember the first time I actually sat through a Star Wars film. I went to a visit a friend one day after school who was a huge Star Wars nerd, coincidentally on a day he decided to rent The Phantom Menace from the video store. When he popped in the video I actually got up and left the tv room, which just goes to show how much of a dick I was about it :P But seeing as I had nowhere to go until my mom came to pick me up, I just kind of wandered about the house catching glimpses of the film every now and again. But each glimpse of the film intrigued me more and more until I finally relented and sat down to watch the rest of the film. By the the time the credits started to roll I was a full on Star Wars fan :D
I was a contrarian for the simple pleasure of being a contrarian I realized in retrospect, which makes me wonder how common it is. At least one close friend of mine actually admitted to me that he doesn't want to watch Game of Thrones since people keep going on and on about it.
Interestingly, because I now enjoy being a Star Wars fan so much, I consider myself very lucky for two reasons. One, I was still fairly young when I finally decided to see my first Star Wars film. It's easier to become a serious fan of something like Star Wars when you are young. And two, that my entry into Star Wars was The Phantom Menace, or at least that I didn't have to suffer through the many years between episodes 6 and 1. It really seems to me as if most people who became Star Wars fans with the original trilogy really, really dislike the prequel trilogy. Which is kind of what happened to me now with episodes 7 and 8, both of which I really, really dislike myself. So I count myself as very lucky that at least there are 6 awesome Star Wars films that I can always return to, each of which I enjoy pretty much equally.
