nightcraw1er.488: Much like some others you post there are on itch.io for example - another drm free store. Not seeing the point in listing every game released if they are already available elsewhere also drm free?
avatar
PixelBoy: This isn't about DRM-free, you can find DRM-free games even on Steam.
This is about trying to find some patterns and reasoning why GOG rejects some games which might be a good addition to their catalog.

I don't know about motives that GOG has, but has anyone noticed that in every GOG reject letter quote that has been posted, they call the game "engaging"?

For some reason I find the use of that particular word amusing.

EDIT: Also, itch.io isn't a DRM-free store. It's just that most games there don't happen to have any DRM. Some, however, do have.
I hate to disagree with you, but all I am seeing is a list of games and a wish list entry. There is no attempt to find a latter, or derive decision making. It's simply a long list of games not on here and their relative wishlist entries to try to get some votes.

Wishlists as such are data that can be used to draw some conclusions.
Just by doing some random browsing there we can see that very few, if any, games have thousands of votes. From that we can speculate that some of the following assumptions may be correct:

1) GOG is correct, and these titles actually are too niche and no one is interested

2) People have bought these games elsewhere and no longer care about GOG (and if I understood correctly, this was your reasoning)

3) GOG users have no faith in wishlists, as unlike on Steam, there has really never been a case where a game has been voted into GOG catalog

4) Something else...

So there really is already usable data, both developer comments and wishlists, that can be used to analyse this. Each and every time someone posts a new game here with some existing source or quote, we get a better overall picture.

Having said that, if someone is using this thread simply as a way to find wishlist links for some games, what's the harm in that? Presumably that's exactly the purpose wishlists are supposed to be around for.

AB2012: Betrayer was one. When I e-mailed the devs (Blackpowder Games), they said they wanted a GOG release and even had a DRM-Free build "ready to go" but GOG refused. Shame because it's an unusual hybrid FPS / stealth set in 1604 with "Very Positive" ratings that stands out beyond the usual "WW2 shooty shooters" and would have been great here.

Party Hard is here now but also took two attempts (the first one rejected).
Really? That is odd, I liked Betrayer and thought it would make a good addition to GOG. Apparently they've become pickier with the years.

You know that? I know exact example of that case. Game is called Poncho. Something quite similar with Fez but different gimmic - shifting between "planes" on screen. Game was declined by GOG, which really pissied me off. So when i fnally got it on rare sale on humble i was excited.

Turned out GOG was right. Game feels "unfinished". Rough edges everywhere. Poorly designed levels. Stiff controls.

Maybe GOG is often wrong, but sometimes...
What I can't understand is why GOG turned down Heroine's Quest.

The only reason I heard is because it's freeware and thus they can't make a profit.

*looks through all the freeware titles GOG has available*

I don't get it.

Well... the only justification I can think of might be, that the "free games" were maybe a gift for new members as a "thank you for joining" sort of thing? (Which Nintendo did such a promotion with people who bought the 3DS at launch, and got 10 free NES and 10 free GBA games on their store account.)

With me, it's not about loyalty to a specific store... I just love gaming, and if GOG has what I want, that's great, if they don't I'll simply look elsewhere, that's really the end of it.

I don't expect them to sell every game ever made in existence (although that would be nice) but it's still a good feeling when GOG does announce when an awesome title comes out for it.

Barry_Woodward: PONCHO
https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/poncho
"We’ve taken a look at PONCHO, it looks like an engaging and colorful platformer with a cool hero and very pleasant atmosphere. Unfortunately, however, we feel that the game would not be a good fit for GOG, as we think that it appears to be too niche for our users, which means that we aren’t confident in its release potential on our site. For this reason I’m afraid we will have to pass on PONCHO."
Poncho is crappy Fez ripoff, i saying it from my own experience. Not amazed it was declined.
Just to be clear, in case anyone was wondering, me posting a game here doesn't necessarily mean that I endorse it or that I'm upset it was rejected.

This one is a debatable case, almost entirely speculation either way, but anyway...

So after their comment about non-Steam releases, it took about a year to have the DVD release, but over two years later, there's no sign of GOG release.

Whether they have changed their minds, or GOG has rejected the game, or something else has happened can only be speculated. It would fit the normal pattern of having been rejected.
The Slaughter

Source: Kickstarter for The Slaughter

"The games in development program is more for games that would classify as Steam early access, i.e. games that are incomplete, rather than episodic. They're still not accepting episodic games that are incomplete. I'v heard they've had some management changes so will see if they change their mind, but I'm not holding out hope."

I think that's one of the most informative comments about the subject.
"They're still not accepting episodic games that are incomplete." That's a very good explanation for many games and cases.

Of course, that doesn't explain why GOG chooses episodic games from developers like Telltale.
Then again, what happened to Telltale explains why GOG had such a policy to begin with.
Homesick

Source: Kickstarter for Homesick

"Many of you requested that we sell on GOG. We would have loved to do that and we tried to, but they told us they had to take a pass and not sell Homesick because this type of game isn’t the most popular with their users. Bummer. Humble, on the other hand, was very interested and has been great to work with."

Unless I'm misunderstanding, the developers of the game decided not to release on GOG. So underworld ascendant doesn't belong here.

EDIT: Oh... I just noticed a ?new? section in the OP: "Games whose developers/publishers aren't interested in releasing on GOG". So I guess it does belong here.

no, reading the thread, the developers seems surprised ("On the GoG front, we didn't anticipate this either. We DO need to deliver a DRM-free option on launch day") and are still trying to get the game here ("While some backers are willing to wait for a GoG key after launch day (if that's possible, depending on our ongoing talks with them)")

I guess I completely misunderstood the situation.
