GameRager: Am I the only person who hasn't played worms? :\
No, same here. And I have zero interest in doing so. But, hopefully this will make some GOG regulars happy.
could be Team 17,SSI or Stardock

looks like now you'll get your chance, GR

keeveek: 2K Games is publishing the newest XCOM game, so I asume they hold rights to older games too?
Well, there is that, and according to MobyGames under the history of MicroProse Software, as well as 2K listed as the publisher for all the older titles on Steam. ;)

All in all though, any new publisher is a victory and any classic game re-released is a success. Since it is most definitely Team17 (Unless GOG is plain fucking with us, which they like to do...) I can't wait to see Worms and maybe even Alien Breed, new and old!

SSI was absorbed by the blob that is Ubisoft.

I never played it on purpose. The game seemed too casual and time-wastey(Not in a worthwhile way like most games I play anyways.) to me. :\

yyahoo: Microprose as a publisher doesn't exist anymore. I believe they were bought out by Infrogrames which is now going by the name Atari.
Old news. They're now owned by Interactive Game Group. Not that I've seen any evidence of Microprose's or IGG's continued existence. Microprose's IPs are scattered to the four winds. Anyone's guess as to what is owned by whom.

adambiser: I should have specified the publisher, not the developer.

Alpha Centauri is published by EA, Civilization III by Infogrames (now Atari), and Civ4 is published by 2K. Yes, the first two are on GOG. Firaxis is a subsidiary of 2K now, at least if wikipedia is right and I understand it correctly, and I don't think they are on GOG.
avatar
yyahoo: I think it's even more confusing than that. Intellectual property frequently changes with publishing arrangements. Even though Infogrames published Civ III, I would imagine that the current publishing rights to Civ III are actually held by the current publisher of the series, 2K.
Worse is that often times the rights revert to the developer after a certain period of time and the developer itself goes into bankruptcy or did previously. Which makes it even more complicated to figure out who it is that bought the rights at auction. Or the list of parties that bought the rights as sometimes they'll only buy rights to some subset of the world.

We already have SSI. Or rather Ubisoft.

IMO they should make it mandatory that a public searchable database be made for IPs of various media so someone somewhere can look this info up at anytime.

Yeah, casual, sure... :E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTP5crYaGW8

While they're at it they ought to legalize orphanware for cases where nobody actually owns the rights any longer.

I'm talking about the more colorful one, with the army looking worms in it.

Plus yes casual....and this is coming from a guy who plays alot of hidden object games.

Agreed 100%. If the rights to any IP become orphaned(due to a company folding and no one buying up the rights/etc) then they should be released to the public.

Take-Two owns 2K. 2K is publishing the new XCOM game.
