For me, for the reasons of it being fantastic, but also because it was my dads favorite game "rip" and we had many many hours of fun together with it in the last few years of his life. Wizardry 7. It will always be a game I hold very dear. Plus the class system in that game is bar none the best of any rpg i have played to date.

There are other classics on here. Many of a caliber that cannot be put up against others as best, because they are all the best at something. But Wizardry 7 has them in spades in my opinion. It is turn based rpg mastered.

I'd say my favorite is either the first Freespace game or the first Splinter Cell.

But that's just a guess. I have many favorites, would hate to have to choose just one.

sharonbn: I tend to think, like timppu, that the zombies in Thief Gold were the weakest element in an otherwise great game.
It is arguably considered the first in the stealth genre (the developers said it belongs to FPS genre, FPS being "first person sneaker").
However, when Thief 2: The Metal Age came out in 2000, I remember reading reviews that the developers "listened to the community" and threw away the zombies and stirred the gameplay away from the magical/occult and concentrated in "traditional" thieving missions, of breaking into houses (be it rich mansions, a bank, seaport warehouses or a prison) featuring mostly human or man-made enemies.
This design gave center stage to the stealth mechanics, and indeed, IMO, this game features the best stealth gameplay and level design in all gaming histroy.
It is a shame that subsequant games in the franchise have failed to live up to the quality of the first two games.
Oh God those zombies scared the hell out of me. I think that thief guild level is the worst and I got stuck in it for many hours. I don't remember if this was in the same game, probably the 2nd, but one level with the timed levers or something you have to pull at different places so a door or gate can open. This is why for me I prefer playing Thief 3 because they had less of those problems. I do think the original have the best story of the three though (4th one doesn't count) so if I have to pick one I would have to go with the original, despite some painful level designs.

Imo Chronicles of Riddick should be in this list as well.

The original Master of Orion. Will probably always be my favorite game.

snowkatt: gog is an off shoot from cd projekt red a subsidiary that has always been wholly owned by cd proket red from the start
One correction, CD Projekt Red doesn't own GOG. CD Projekt does, and CD Projekt owns also CD Projekt Red. GOG and CDPR have the same parent company.

EDIT: Well, Wikipedia says that GOG is a subsidiary of CDP, while CD Projekt RED is a "division" of CDP. Not sure what is the exact distinction between the two, but still, CDP owns GOG.com.

S.Garffsky: Now THAT is real commitment to a game! I've heard of favorite games, but dang, an exploding dvd drive? XD And yes, that would count for this topic, because I would place that under the "rediscovering" category (even if you constantly played the game in a retail version up until you got the GOG version).

Also, it's interesting to see that almost every responder has each named a different game as their favorite (with the exception of a couple of duplicates). I like seeing the various tastes and interests in games, which is why I made this topic in the first place. Keep posting!
well the disc was damaged and it flew apart in my external dvd drive
and the force of that took the drive with it

oblivion is another perennial favorite of mine and i think i have 5 or 6 copies of that one
my main to use copy of that game is the fifth anniversary edition
Heroes of Might and Magic III: Complete Edition.
Master of Orion 1, I guess.

Most of my favourite games (HoMM, Age of Wonders, Thief, Baldur's Gate, Gold Box games) I already have as physical copies, while some more recent favourites (Dark Heart of Uukrul, Wizardry 1-5, Magic Candle) are only available from abandonware sites (or Ebay).

As a pretty big Freespace fan myself, I'm curious: why do you like the first Freespace over Freespace 2? Not judging or anything, I've just seen almost everyone say that they prefer the second one (which I do, as well). Maybe you played the first one when it came out back in the day, so that was your first experience with the Freespace series? (I say "series," but I should actually say duology. They SO needed to make Freespace 3. However, with some of the quality fan-made campaigns, I'd argue that it is indeed a series; Blue Planet 1 was Freespace 3 for me. :) )

Ah, the joys of complicated corporate technicalities, lol. This is why I don't want to work in big business.
