At first it was Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2, which is for me the best Star Wars game and a great C-RPG...but then I played Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines

I think I have never played any C-RPG that was so immersive. It is now one my favourite games of all time
Sanitarium.
don't have one, like to change and rotate thru the ones i own.
so gonna go with project zomboid for today.
I haven't yet played all that many, but Deus Ex is definitely my current favourite.
Hmmm...favorite game, that isn't as easy as I thought.

I love Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich, and I've owned a physical copy for a long time. I only recently bought it on here to get rid of the infernal DRM the European version has.

Though...something I played on here...System Shock 2, which I got for free quickly catapulted itself to a favorite. Another possibility is Star Wars: Tie Fighter, which is absolutely awesome.

I'm apparently not a very decisive guy.
It's a toss up between Betrayal at Krondor and Baldur's Gate II.

But recently, it has been Shadow Warrior 2.

Telika: Argh, alas alas I am allergic to JRPGs. Visual design issues (manga style, toddler shaped characters, etc).
avatar
dtgreene: So, you are unwilling to play a game *just* because of the visual style?
One more "not Telika but share the general sentiment".

Toddler-shaped characters: nope. Dudes who look like women, women who look like primary schoolers with optional gag tits: nope. Horrifying facial and body proportions: like, the fuck is this? (I have to clarify I don't mean "sexist unrealistic expectations for young girls", I mean "this is a mutant straight from the uncanny valley and I am genuinely horrified".) That being said, "manga style" comes in many varieties and a few are actually good to great (Pier Solar, Celestian Tales), and I can overlook toddler sprites.

Another problem specifically Japanese games tend to suffer from is terrible fonts (example: Elminage Gothic, what is this, Arial? my eeeeeeeeyes). (No, "learn Japanese" is not an option, I still have French and Python queued up.)

JRPGs are by no means the only games to have terrible graphics, JRPGness simply has the strongest correlation with terrible graphics. There's also early 3D, crap-on-the-screen low-res (recently: Conga Master, Death Road to Canada), early-3D-derived sprites (HoMM3), and generally bad graphic design (happens a lot in non-GOGworthy indie games).

Now for some positivity: the definitive list of best games (so far)

Anodyne - top-down surreal action-exploration
Another World - classic sci-fi platformer art game
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura - best RPG
Botanicula - godmode clicker epic pantheist adventure
Crypt of the NecroDancer - fantasy rhythm tactics with a story
DROD: The Second Sky - hardest and fairest puzzle game ever, with a comedic plot
Defender's Quest - fantasy tower defense RPG
Hatoful Boyfriend - mindfuck dating sim parody
Heroes of Might and Magic 2 - fantasy blitz strategy
Ironclad Tactics - steampunk Civil War deckbuilding tactics
King's Quest 6 - Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow - [cruel] classic fairytale adventure
LOOM - surreal fantasy minimalist adventure (the GOG version is terrible)
La-Mulana - platformer with exploration- and lore-based puzzles
Lumino City - puzzle art game
Master of Magic - fantasy 4e
No Pineapple Left Behind - political puzzle/management
Paws: A Shelter 2 Game - zomg fluffy fuzzy-wuzzy art game
Pier Solar and the Great Architects - JRPG
Planetfall - sci-fi text adventure (part of the Zork Antholgy)
Primordia - transhumanist ethics adventure
Project Zomboid - ultra-detailed zombie apocalypse survival
Resonance - modern adventure
Rogue Legacy - roguelike fantasy platformer with heritable advancement
Ronin - turn-based platformer / badass sim
STASIS - sci-fi horror adventure, trial and error done right
Schein - horror puzzle platformer
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri - hard-sci-fi 4e
Spacechem - sci-fi programming game
Stardew Valley - managerial life sim
TIS-100 - programming game
Tales of Maj'Eyal - true high fantasy roguelike (diverse classes, fairness, learning curve)
Terraria - epic crafting RPG
Teslagrad - teslapunk puzzle platformer
The Last Door - Victorian horror adventure
The Swapper - sci-fi puzzle platformer
Trine - fantasy platformer
Vangers - mindfuck tank driving RPG (like Sunless Sea but with meaningful combat and atrocious graphics)
I think, if I had to pick one, based on time played I reckon it'd be King's Bounty - The Legend.

I enjoy the light questing, the writing style and the battles. Plus since you can play as many fights as you feel like it makes it something I can fit into the amount of time I have available.

edit: Guilty pleasure: Crusaders of Might and Magic

Tough question.. some favourite games that own here and where I have actually played the GOG version:

Witcher series
STALKER SoC
System Shock series (although played before, too)
Botanicula

Games that I own on GOG and love, but where I haven't played the GOG version yet:
VtM: Bloodlines
Planescape: Torment
Morrowind
Quake
Well since Freddi Fish 2 (STILL) isn't here... Some of my favorites at the moment are the first 2 Doom games, Deus Ex, and System Shock 2. I'm replaying SS2 with the SEC(C) mod and it certainly ups the challenge somewhat. Although I haven't gotten back to it yet cause I also just started System Shock 1! I would like to try the GMDX mod for Deus Ex but I can't for the life of me get it to run in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

zeogold: Oh, right, thread. Forgot there was a thread here with an actual topic and stuff.

I'm gonna say Myst, but really, does that surprise anybody?
What do you think of Riven, then?

advancedhero: What do you think of Riven, then?
I sadly have not played it yet. It's next on my "to-play" list, but I've had computer woes for over a month now and am still waiting on that to sort itself out before I can play anything.
Bought and played on Gog, I'd have to go with a few;

Evil Genius
Hotline Miami
Hitman: Codename 47

Honorable mention;

Her Story

Oh, nice! Fresh meat! Well, I hope you enjoy it, it's truly one of the most immersive games I've ever played. I think it holds up better than Myst.

That's what I've been told. Gotta say, I'm looking forward to it pretty heavily.
