wyrenn: Dark Heart of Uukrul is the bees knees. I would kill to have that game on here.

S.Garffsky: What is this game? I've never heard of it.
It's one of the most unique CRPGs I've played, but rather obscure.

A brilliant Let's Play of the game: http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/lets-play-dark-heart-of-uukrul-dead-and-done.54028/

Dang, this is actually pretty cool looking! I'm not much of an RPG person these days, but this one looks awesome! I love the part where you answer questions to define the personality/skills of each party member. Never seen that done before, but again, I haven't played a ton of RPGs, so I don't know how unique that concept is. Still, the design as well as the interface and general premise of the story look good! Time to go upvote the GOG wishlist so that we can get this game here. :)

Also, I have never seen a Let's Play done in this fashion. You learn something new every day! Maybe I'm just "newb," but I always think of a YouTube series whenever I see the words "Let's Play." This text-based way is nice because you can easily scroll through and take a look at some highlights and screenshots.

S.Garffsky: As a pretty big Freespace fan myself, I'm curious: why do you like the first Freespace over Freespace 2?
You didn't ask me so of course I am going to answer. Albeit, I don't really prefer Freespace over the sequel, but still.

IIRC the first Freespace had a better and more interesting story. Frankly I don't even recall exactly what the story in the sequel was about, something something political something. The original's story seemed more pressing, the fate of the whole humanity is at stake and two enemies have to join forces to fight the new threat that is trying to consume them both...

But for gameplay, the sequel wins. First of all, I really much hated the early, and the final, missions of the first game because you didn't have any shields, hence every enemy shot would bring you closer to mission failure (which was a biiiiiig problem in the higher difficulty levels). I hated many missions in "Tie Fighter" for the same reason, the ones where you were flying some Tie Fighter or Bomber that didn't have any shields whatsoever.

And yeah the big ship fights were more flashy in the sequel, with those big ass beam guns.

I would have to agree with you on most of those points. The whole dynamic between the Terrans and Vasudans in the first game was pretty cool, but the gameplay did suffer quite a bit. However, I liked the story in the second game, maybe not quite as much as in the first game, but still. The sequel is interesting because the Shivans come back for round 2, after the Terrans thought they had defeated them and routed them from their galaxy after destroying the Shivans' "biggest" ship, named the Lucifer. (It was SO not their biggest ship, as you soon find out in the sequel. XD)
I kind of want to go the easy road and say Doom (it was actually my first purchase here I believe.) Other good mentions from me would be the original System Shock, Guilty Gear X2 #Reload, and Unreal Tournament 2004.

I prefer text based LPs myself. I can read faster than people talk, and some have unpleasant voices.

Videos are better for for showing complex battles in a game, though.
Probably Master of Magic. I spent so many hundreds of hours on that one.
The Witcher 3 is my favourite game anywhere right now.
I'm going to go with Heroes of Might and Magic 2 as playing it on GOG was my first time playing it. I had played 3 when it came out and was surprised how much fun and charm 2 had.
Unquestionably, Thief II: The Metal Age, though I've yet to actually install GOG's version. Favourite game of all Time.
My favourite game, enjoyed through GOG for the very first time? Probably Planescape: Torment.

KiNgBrAdLeY7: Watching the Snowflake freakshow Live, inspecting active specimens in their "natural-habitat" and their aggressive expansion on the expense of other life forms and their welfare, is my favorite "game", here on gog! :D
yeah man, isn't it good that such a thing could only exist on the internet? thank god we can't see them in the real world, or if we do we don't know it.

god bless you my fellow cynic.

glad to know someone else out there is also thinking.

S.Garffsky: As a pretty big Freespace fan myself, I'm curious: why do you like the first Freespace over Freespace 2? Not judging or anything, I've just seen almost everyone say that they prefer the second one (which I do, as well). Maybe you played the first one when it came out back in the day, so that was your first experience with the Freespace series? (I say "series," but I should actually say duology. They SO needed to make Freespace 3. However, with some of the quality fan-made campaigns, I'd argue that it is indeed a series; Blue Planet 1 was Freespace 3 for me.
1. There is a certain nostalgia factor about the game, as I played it when it first came out as you mentioned. And played many multiplayer hours using dialup speeds.

2. I highly enjoy the cutscenes, especially the intro.

3. I thought having the final boss battle in hyperspace was unique and interesting.

4. I like the Athena bomber only found in the 1st game.

5. Finally, I thought the plot point of having humans team up with the Vasudans against the Shivans was interesting and sort of "Star Trekish".

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about the cutscenes, but you're right - they're much more satisfying then the ones in the sequel. They actually show (briefly) what the Shivans themselves look like in one of them, as I remember, and I'm pretty sure that's the only time you get to see them as anything other than ships zipping around in space. I did enjoy the final battle in the first game, too - it was freakishly difficult, at least for me!
Thief Gold and/or System Shock 2

Hands down.

No contest.
Fallout 2 absolutely!
