dtgreene: It's worth noting that, looking at a list of the best selling video games of all time:
Surprisingly few are story-based. Many of them have an excuse plot or no plot at all.
Starting at the top of the list:
* Tetris: No story
* Minecraft: No story (to my understanding)
* Grand Theft Auto V: This might have a story
* Wii Sports: Probably no story or excuse plot
* Pokemon Gen 1: Has a story, but it's not the main focus
* PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds: Never heard of it (apparently online competitive multiplayer)
* Super Mario Bros.: Excuse plot
* Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus: See Wii Sports
* Pokemon Gen 2: See Pokemon Gen 1
As you can see, of the 9 games I've listed, only three of them can be said to have a significant amount of story content, and two of them don't focus much on that story.
A list of biggest box office hits of all time:
'Avatar' Pocahontas rip-off
'Titanic' Mediocre drama
'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' A New Hope rip-off
'Avengers: Infinity War' Complex and deep story... for a superhero movie
'Jurassic World' Excuse for a plot
'Marvel's The Avengers' Generic superhero team-up
'Furious 7' Probably not much of a story.
'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Another generic superhero team-up with pretense
By the same logic, films also don't need a story. At least deep and complex one.
Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important.

I'm not much fan of porn. But I liked story in "Magical girl AI" anime. And the story in "Nightmare Campus" was cool, but there was no final episode made.
