dtgreene: Hence, the viewpoint that videogames need stories seems to be the minority, and my viewpoint that games should focus on gameplay is actually the one that leads to biggest sales.
avatar
Cavalary: Would that imply that said viewpoint of yours shouldn't be in this thread and the pro-story one should be? :D
That's the logical conclusion of the argument. Of the GOG userbase, however, it seems that my viewpoint is unpopular, even if that's not the case of the general population.

(Keep in mind that the general population includes those who often don't think of themselves as "gamers", or who many don't place in the category; this includes, for example, people who only play games like Solitaire, Tetris (note that that game is #1 on the list), and Candy Crush Saga (no resemblance to the SaGa series).)

samuraigaiden: Diablo 1 is the best game in the series.
Is that an unpopular opinion? I thought it was obvious.

DadJoke007: - Resident Evil lost its soul when the series stepped away from tank controls.Tank controls in horror games deserves a comeback.
I'll go a step further. In the original RE you didn't have auto aim. Shooting down stuff was never a great option unless it was right in your face, because you would probably miss. This was the line in the sand that said "this is an adventure game with tense moments and guns, not an action game with puzzles". Later they added it in the Director's Cut version, if I'm not misremembering.

My point: no auto aim AND tank controls is the perfect combination.

I prefer #2, but you're right. #1 is the majority pick for best in the series.

Likely not an unpopular opinion at all to say that commercial success is not only not an indicator of quality but often quite the opposite though...
- Nintendo as a whole disgusts me.

- Civ IV can't hold a candle to Civ III.

- Dark Souls is terrible and overrated.

- Alpha Centauri is actually not as good as most people say.

- Assassin's Creed 1 is utterly bad designed in almost every way. And the series went downhill from there on.

- Doom 1 & 2 have some of the best levels ever designed in a video game. It is just a shame those are buried under a stinking pile of convulted labyrinths full of "The Hunt for the Keycard", "Confusing Teleporter Fun Time!" and "The Mystery of 'What does this switch do?'".

Fair opinions except Assassin's Creed 2 is a major upgrade from the first, and that is a fact.

Really?
Hmmmm
I guess I'll have to check it out.

I didn't think #1 was bad design, I just thought it was BORING, which is probably why I never got more than ten minutes in.

Maybe I should try it again.

.I don't like having too many games :-/

.I don't think a backlog is a bad thing.

.Not having an amazing game coming out every week or even every month is a godsend.

.NES was better than SNES.

.I like the idea of having a collection of several key games since I started gaming but I hate the idea of actually having a collection...

.Icewind Dale is better than Baldur's Gate (there, I said it).

.I actually prefer gamepad over keyboard and mouse :o (I don't play online and is more confortable to me).

Extras not related to games:

.Meego was the best smartphone OS ever. Miss you my faithful N9...

.The Godfather 3 is better than than 2...

Does that include Baldur's Gate?
Nothing makes me cringe more than someone saying they "adore" a game that does not have adorable art.

Really. It has everything the first promised and then more. A lenghty detailed story, (likeable) character development, varied gameplay, just quality entertainment. But in 2019 it aged quite a lot in visuals, and the console remaster is not on pc...

That's a pretty good collection of unpopular opinions.

I still play the original AoE.
Do you think I'm a stickler for modern visuals? ;P
