Lovstrelfra: Wait, that means they will charge the devs every time we reinstall their games as well? When they mentioned "per new install", does it refer to the first time you install the game, or just whenever you install the game (meaning this also includes reinstalling the game)?
avatar
Darvond: We don't know, it's very unclear because the entire idea is harebrained and anti-indie.

neumi5694: No. That idea was already abandoned or at least announced to be abandoned.
However, if you install the game on two computers, it will count as two, even if you bought it only once.
I see. Thanks guys. Either way, it sucks. I'd much prefer if they took the percentage of the total sales revenue route instead of this.

Even if they backpedaled to that, what's the point? They're nearly a billion dollars in debt.

Ooh, way more than that. Closer to 3 billion. They could sell off some of the stupider acquisitions they made, which should help reduce the insane headcount. They were making money fine just by selling licenses for the editor, but then they got a new CEO and started the whole "growth for the sake of growth with no real plan for what to do when they had market dominance" thing. Like the dog who caught the car.

Can this script be adapted to run inside Unity?

(I actually do know how to do this in Godot.)
In a positive news resultant from Unity unequivilacanty making a mess of their entire bed, frame, mattress and somehow managing to even spoil the inside of the bedding, Terraria developers Re-Logic have pleged 100k$ immediately payable to GODOT and FNA, and will be pledging 1k$ monthly.

Not sure

Im quite impressed and happy for Re-Logic.

Though it seems to me you missed one 0 in the 10k$:
(see attached image)
[It seems its actually 100.000 $]

I can already see Unity's CEO drooling from far away. I do wonder until how long will Re-Logic keep on donating that monthly $1,000 tho, mainly because I don't know just how much non-operating income that they're left with each month. I know their games are famous, but I still had to ask. Probably Re-Logic is also hoping that by taking this initiative they would motivate other game companies into pooling their capital and donating their money to those open source engines as well, so each of them could compensate the other whenever one of them isn't doing that well and has to withdraw from donating. That said, I doubt there'd be many game publishers who would do something similar considering the little faith I have in some of them (the really big ones).

Sorry, I recently read a debate over long form and short form numbering and it kinda melted my brain a bit.

Maybe you were thinking 10万, which is how you say 100K in Japanese?

Yes, System.Diagnotics.Process.Start() can be used to run external apps.

That's $2000/month, since they're donating to both Godot and FNA. Terraria has sold over 40 million copies last I heard, and the company has <12 staff (not to mention the game is self-published). They can probably afford to keep donating monthly for approximately infinity years.

Haha, no problem!
Thank you for sharing the news too. I would have not know about this if you had not share it.

Not to mention that they do have Terraria on other platforms plus Terraria based products, so they can afford that for a good while.
To this day they're probably the most successful an indie team has ever been while not joining a bigger player.
Mentioning that because many indie developers do inspire themselves in Re-Logic, so this investment/donation is a HUGE incentive to Godot and FNA and devs.

Time will tell, but I'd personally say Godot is the next Unity, which is nice, because their "business model" is fully community and FLOSS based and possibly, a huge growing is coming for them.

My bad, it's supposed to be $2,000/month. That's good to know as I'm sure those two engines will definitely benefit. Thanks eric5h5 & .Keys .
Doing just a bit of research:
* Terraria uses FNA for its Mac and Linux ports, so Terraria's developer does need it to stick around. This could easily explain the choice of FNA as a donation target.
* Crystal Project also uses FNA, as do some other games including (not on GOG but DRM-free elsewhere) Celeste.
* FNA is a re-implementation of Microsoft's XNA. XNA is no longer maintained, so FNA is needed to preserve those games and allow them to be ported to Mac and Linux.
