What I'd like to see is that when someone downreps, the downrepped get's notified by whom is doing it (using the name they go by on the forums) so they can't just "strike from the shadows".

If the first, that's kinda weird, because I don't think I'd expect the gdc website to go down any time soon, but if the second, why? GDC is a conference of all the game industry professionals. Have they come out as a whole against gamersgate? :D

I find the gdc videos an incredible resource (was introduced to them through a link to one of their classic game postmortems, something I'm sure people here would be very interested in), and while I've never had the chance to attend, I've nothing against giving them some of my clicks.

It is not really something surprising that the schedule you linked include those talks and panels, because your link was to the talks that come under the "advocacy" track. What else should they have there? If you want other types of talks (some of the previous advocacy talks are pretty interesting, though), there are other tracks too. You can filter it to Game Postmortems- apparently they'll have a Diablo postmortem by David Brevik this year, that should be interesting to see, or one on Rez, or on Darkest Dungeon for newer games, etc. Their Game Design talks are also very interesting to watch too.

Seeing how the probably most active downrepper (at least in the past) is advertising the removal of this function boggles my mind.

I'm against the downvote function and seeing who voted what up or down is how it's done right. On my other board only "like" is possible but still everyone can see who voted. All this shadow sniping (with who knows how many accounts per person) shouldn't even be possible.

We get rid of anon rep voting which is easy and accessible, so then we get inbox PM floods... and have to block hate and spam from our accounts due to some thin skinned pussies demanding that we remove anon rep voting. I think this plan needs a second draft... possibly a third.

In courts (most western) you have the right to face an accuser. I'm not sure that same right should have to apply to a privately owned message forum tied to a video game distribution website. Let's not break out the rep-lives-matter protest signs just yet.

I don't know about hedwards, but you overvalue my abilities for internet combat... not the skills, but the motivation. I may have up or down voted a handful of times since coming here. That vote buttons requires several calories to burn in clicking my mouse. Those are very important calories. Who knows when you might need some extra ones.

I don't like it myself, especially when some people will archive for places like Kotaku and won't for places like Brietbart and post the links directly in the thread OP (on reddit). And archives almost always become unreachable after a few months, as I just found out trying to dig into the GDC enmity.
Yes; IGDA which runs GDC has opposed gamergate by promoting the GGautoblocker and its founder EW Adams has tweeted out that he wishes to exclude proGG devs from the association / union(?).

Yes, it is kinda like a psuedo-union; so they'll put out both useful and interesting stuff; which will help many people trying to get in to game development or getting information about it. I would gladly turn off adblock for their good stuff as well.

Those topics can and should be discussed; but for me personally, and I think this is what many others thought as well; its the fact that a fairly large chunk of what is in there is only stuff like ''Blacks in games'' and ''Jewish game devs roundtable'' and other absurd stuff. Also, now I know what people ''advocacy'' varies from person to person, but all that just seems to me to be ideologically motivated by the social justice crowd.

I don't recall Vain ever supporting the idea in the past. I suspect his support now has mostly to do with realizing that he is on the losing side of the rep war.

That's your automatic confusion that always comes up when the prejudice you base your theories on is challenged by contradictory evidence. That way, you preserve your prejudice and the perceived integrity of the evidently faulty if not disproven base theory. No particular relation to gamergate – unfortunately. The Cologne thread was full to the brim with that kind of prejudice preserving confusion.

Spectacular case of selective memory. I thought the idea of 'downvotes' to be hilariously childish since 2006 at the very least, and have been a driving behind the scenes force in appealing to Telltale to remove downvotes from their new forum, ever since I beta tested it in 2012. You'll find my protest against the GOG way sprinkled in this very thread. You'll just have to look a bit harder.

Disclaimer: I have asked some friends in other forums to vote in this poll if they're interested in making GOG a more welcoming place. These are primarily game studio forums the devs of which have been hit hardest by gamergate (because they spoke out most strongly against gamergate and/or have published games that visibly considered inclusion and diversity) and consequently what you'll find there are community members most opposed to gamergate.

Sure, why not. The 'rep war' is fought and won by downvote trolls, and even though you weren't aware just now, you're heavily implying on what 'side' those trolls are most found. I haven't really posted anywhere for two weeks and saw my rep going down daily. Some gamergate related guy who shall remain unnamed here has, in the last month, collected almost 200 rep without really posting anywhere sensibly.

And that's why this thread and possibly the entire forum will remain a gamergater hugbox. I personally can and will not go to these lengths just to violate a basically democratic process – that putrid reek of Rabid Puppies.

Why? They'd know I did it. There is a saying in certain circles "Freedom of Speech is not freedom from repercussions". And the snipers can DV all they want without issue as it stands. That has a chilling effect on any sort of meaningful dialog. There should be some form of "concern" (even self) if one presses the "-" button.

So while there could be a negative aspect that I hadn't considered. But that could be temporary IMHO.

What do I mean by that? Well, gaming journalists tend to congregate around hotspots for gaming studios like New York and San Francisco. This helps with their job obviously; networking is a vital part of journalism. The problem is when everybody is in the same place, they tend to get less ‘worldly’, and hold similar views, constantly reinforcing each other’s opinions. Everybody knows everybody, and they all exist in a bubble.

I looked over the staff locations for Polygon and Kotaku to illustrate. Out of 20 Polygon staff, 6 were from New York and 4 were from San Francisco (though I think 1 just lived really close). Out of 11 Kotaku staff, 7 were from New York! That’s crazy. I wonder if old media can match those ratios.
