tinyE: My question is this, if they are going to Xerox a movie would you rather they Xerox 'A New Hope' or 'The Postman'? XD

They actually did a remake of Point Break which is like trying to clone a turd, and you are upset they cloned one of the greatest movies ever. :P

Breja: You know... I actually really like The Postman. I enjoy the premise, the scope of it all and the hopeful, optimistic approach to post-apocalypse. I'm a sucker for movies with optimistic message, and I don't mind how full of pathos this movie is, because despite that it's not pretentious. It's very earnest in it's pathos, not trying to be clever and deep, just uplifting.

Also, I have to admit, I'm a big fan of Kevin Costner. I love Dances With Wolves to death, and Open Range is one of the best westerns I've seen, definately the best one since Sergio Leone's works. Whether it's Robin Hood or Thirteen Days, I always enjoy his work.

But back to your actuall question- I'm not "upset" but yeah, ripping off a good movie bothers me more than ripping off a bad one. Or at least, it bothers me in a different way. Especially when he result is an inferior copy, rather than something really good, whether in comparison or on it's own.
Dances with Wolves, Tin Cup, and Fandango are three of my favorite movies ever. Well so is The Untouchables but not because of him. I just think he phones it in a lot.

Jeets2: Somebody already beat me to this but my first response was also to say we haven't seen Rei in a metal bikini and matching choker set yet :).

Breja: You know, the funny thing that's really not my go-to "Leia is so hot" image. The thing is, when I say Leia was hot I don't just mean she was physically attractive, though she definately was, but also what a cool character she was. She was not the greatest sex bomb to ever grace the screen, and that's part of what was so great. She was a person, not eye candy, and that made her more, not less attractive. Rey on the other hand does not work as a new character to fill that role. She's written to be spunky like Leia, but neither the script nor the actress really pull it off. I don't think miss Ridley has Carrie Fisher's charisma, and she's sort of... too pretty. She has kind of bland, "every pretty actress" look. Cinema and movie screens are ful of beautifull people, and she just blends in with that crowd for me.

I can't help but wish they gave the role to Carrie Fisher's daughter, who has asmall cameo in the movie. Assuming she has acting skills to pull it off of course. She's not as "pretty" as Daisy Ridley, but she looks more interesting, she looks like a Star Wars protagonist I'd remember. Not to mention if Rey does turn out to be a Skywalker, it would be damn perfect.
god you just made me realize how cynically executed this movie was. I wonder if they cast this girl in particular because of everything you just said. which brings me to the second part of what I was gonna say. I think everything you just said about Leia perfectly describes Rey. I had the complete opposite reaction you did. basically that she wasn't as perfect as your usual hollywood girl, and that she also had a practicality about her that they also lack. I never realized the connection to Leia. but I in fact did think everything you just applied to Leia applies to Rey.

Wait a sec... did you just hate on the original Point Break? Probably the greatest action film ever?

Oh and on the subject of Star Wars, the director of Episode 9 commented about the whole replace him with George Lucas thing with he's going to try his very best to bring the creativity back to Star Wars. So it's been noted.

Damn Star Wars fans can't even make up their mind which director they want.

How would you feel if they decided to literally re-do A New Hope, complete with new actors and art direction, as well as new special effects, but the story was the same? This remake would be called something like Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope Remake.

How would you feel if Episode 1 got the same treatment?

I know what you're saying and I agree with your pov. Its just that when you use the words "hot" and "Leia" in the same sentence, I think everyone's mind will drift towards the bikini scene so I thought it a valid comment to make.

From the moment I saw Rey, I thought of Kiera Knightly and how very alike the two are - face, body, accent, everything. You can interchange both of them in all their movies with the only difference being one is famous and the other was unknown until now. So I can see what you said about being bland even for an attractive girl.

And then I saw the link you provided to Carrie Fisher's daughter and I immediately wished she really would have been cast as Rey with the caveat that she can act the part. I wonder if she was given a chance to audition. Even if she's not as "pretty" as Daisy Ridley, I find her to be more attractive from that middle picture. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all.
We can second guess all these decisions forever but in the end, it was still an entertaining movie and nothing more. It didn't really make me more interested in the lore/mythos or whatever you want to call it of that universe. And its highly unlikely I watch it again because time would be better spent watching A New Hope if the mood strikes.

An observation only for those actually paying attention. For everyone else is an explosion of Mary Sue action figures and pretty lightsaber colors.

LOL, the funniest reply in all this thread :-) (toghether with Kylo = Emo Vader)

In Episode VIII we will see Rey, hanging in some balcony in a cloudy city, and Kylo saying her "I am your brother" :-P
She called him Dark Vader... :/

Yes, and hopefully they will take a page from Game of Thrones and have Kylo tell her that right before he pushes her over the balcony to her death 500 feet below the sprawling CGI palace on the planet of Derp-Derp-4.

Now how's that for a cliffhanger to episode 9?
When you try to make everyone happy, no one is. I didn't want a movie for the fans like they made, all the constant in your face cameos was one of the things I hated most about the prequel trilogy. I want a good story, not constant reminders of a better story to try and convince me the new story is just as good.
