In a dystopian world where wealthy capitalists control elections and media, we’re faced with two choices - accept our fate or fight for something better. Tonight We Riot is now available without DRM oppression on GOG.COM. In this crowd-based brawler, you take the leadership of a whole movement of people whose well-being determines the success of your revolution.

BitMaster_1980: Third alternative: it's clearly tongue in cheek and so obviously over the top that neither of your two alternatives should really be considered by a reasonable person. It's even got 'whimsy' as part of the core features. As well as Kaiju and wood chippers.

Paradoks: Well, the developer apparently disagrees:

“The idea for the game came from a multitude of places,” Ted Anderson, an artist with game developer Pixel Pushers Union 512, told Variety. “For one my own politics. I’m a socialist and I’ve never seen an unapologetically left-wing game ever and I played games my entire life. So I started thinking, what would be an interesting way to tackle that as a topic.
avatar
Paradoks: And the fact that Variety of all places writes about it implies that he actually means it.
So case closed, it is actually option number 1.
So there is one member on the team who is actually left-leaning. An artist, not even a team lead. Their background was one of the multitude of places that offered inspiration.
I don't see how that invalidates the whimsical and completely over-the-top nature of the game.
I'll just repost my Twitter comments

Are they able to use guns? because if the wealthy capitalists have guns I'm not sure bats and molotovs will be enough. :p ... while I have no interest in this game personally, I'm glad it's here because in general I prefer less curation than more! (assuming the game passes a general q-a test)
Fight the power for a tenner!

Looks alright but kinda falls into the sea of pixel art

Looks like a fun beat em up.

Wishlisted for now.

swires86: Antifa Simulator 2020 is just fine, but any game with a right-wing message would be banned on the spot, amirite!?

(just that you nerds don't get all decent game stories are already based on traditional gender roles, ethnic conflicts, the military and so on)
You have a plenty of strategy games on GOG which indirectly or directly promote wide variety of Right wing ideologies - from capitalism to fascism.

From 40K and Civ to Tropico, take your pick.

That artist is the founder of the studio. This game is a manifest. The fact that they chose a humorous way to do represent it doesn't change it. And as I said - it's their right to do so, it's their game. I simply won't be playing it.

I'll wait for the Game of the Year Zero Edition with the "Starve Together" and "Everybody's Gone to the Gulag" DLCs included.

Interesting!

I like the "$15.00" price too as opposed to the ".99"s that everyone uses to supposedly fool people into thinking things cost a dollar less.
Looks like the game play is good. Sadly, I don't want to give money to the developer who made the piece. There's a big difference between free market capitalism and crony corporatism. And I certainly don't want to monetarily reward (hah!) someone who endorses embracing authoritarianism so overtly.

Very well said! Yes, it does seem a bit "high-priced" considering accusations of hypocrisy, though I have seen arguments the other way too that it is not a violation of such beliefs for them to charge/accept money in that respect since at least it is in their hands rather than going to the people they disagree with. But I don't want to go off-topic.

viperfdl: Is the game fun? The idea sounds like fun.

Tarhiel: Not to me.

History taught us communism doesn´t work and some of us had to live in it, so we could experience it first hand.

I don´t mind political games (1979 Revolution), as long as the ideas which this one seems to propagate stays in the realm of video games.
Well to be fair<=(It's now a meme but still) games and movies have been harping on this theme since the 80s, the only difference now is that society caught up with those very videogame/movie themes!
Nah, nevermind.

I can really get behind that trailer! Ahah! :D

Seeing how this seems to trigger (alt)right bangers I have half a mind to just buy it.

But, any reviews and whatnot? What about key rebinds (yea, classic me), are they available? Playable with gamepad?

What?!

From the trailer, they clearly do the opposite.

You mean, they embrace authoritarianism covertly?
