Darvond: Even knowing that the creator of Sam & Max himself was there the whole time, approving the changes?
avatar
MarkoH01: To be honest, I doubt the creator was there. They probably just sent Purcell their designs and he improved them. I really doubt that he even played the remaster or was there when they recorded the new VO or made the changes.
And even if he is there, it doesn't excuse the censorship, a creator is not immune to bad judgement calls or being called out on them.

Sure - I wasn't searching for an excuse for the censorship (because there is none) I just wanted to point out a possible solution to the question why somebody who created a "let's go as far as we can" cartoon might possibly approve these changes - I simply guess he did not even know. It is not just anti Sam and Max it is also anti Steve Purcell and therefore I guess he never approved anything regarding the changes.

Oh I know you weren't making an excuse, I honestly can't see Purcell agreeing to these changes either... but I've also seen people I used to respect turn to neutered, politically correct shells of themselves. One would hope that you're on the money that he was barely consulted and would disapprove of what's been done here.

Though even if this is the case and even if he would speak out ... it still does not mean the devs will have to change a thing. If they think (for whatever convulated reason) that they will make more money by not offending certain groups (with a Sam and Max game - LMAO) and instead offending and alienating their core fans ... I doubt this would change anything. Of course you are correct - everybody can change, even Purcell, but I pray that this is not the case. Next Sam and Max would be completely without any violence ... the usual tale with a mild mannered rabbit and dog working in a not so criminal noir town ... yikes!

God that is a scary thought. Though the perpetually offended people that these changes are aimed at never seem to have much of a problem with wanton violence and destruction.

I want to get off this timeline now please.

Well, this will be my 1st refund on GOG.

Replacing original voice actor just because he has “wrong” skin color was already ridiculous (imho, even more ridiculous than censorship). I don’t want to support this idiocy.

If they return the correct voice for Bosco with all lines intact (and there’s no need to replace the new version — just let a player choose which variant they prefer — it’s the right thing to do), then I’ll buy the game. But of course they won’t.

MarkoH01: Okay, that settles it. Won't support that amount of pure censoring ... I almost bought it and I was ready to help the devs since I liked their reply but that is just too much and they changed ít for obvious reasons. So it's a lost purchase on my side.
Same here. Already removed from the wishlist. It's not even the wording of the altered jokes themselves that's the issue for many, but rather the new patronizing undertones you'll experience when playing of grown adults being told what they're 'permitted' to laugh at by overly insecure intermediaries who never even created the original content. And the usual 'takeaway' that half this stuff has little to do with making the world a better place, but rather the usual vanity based peer approval seeking / 'showcasing' on Social Media for the sake of a few cheap likes from "Game Journalists (tm)"...

markrichardb: No way a comedy game gets re-released in 2020 without alterations to the jokes themselves.

And... I've suddenly lost all interest in the game... wonder how that happened.
And on top of the lame censorship, true to form of many "improved" sequels that magically appear at 4x the price of the old one, the soundtrack (that was bundled for free in the original 2007 version) is of course split off and charged as separate "DLC". So the price for the censored version has "only" quadrupled over the uncensored one if you don't want the soundtrack. If you do want it the price has instead quintupled...
Ya gonna take a pass on this, the cons out-way the pros.

I suggest everyone voice their displeasure at the censorship and voice changes to the developer through email, social media, and by not buying the game. The less people stand for this kind of crap the more chance of seeing things changed.

I know it's a long shot but PC culture has long since gone beyond 'too far' and the more we stay apathetic to it the worse it will get.

Actually did just contact developer to let them know I wasn't going to buy the game and the reasons why.

Contact info is at the bottom of the main website page https://skunkapegames.com/

I just submitted my own request for a refund, and will be contacting the devs as to why.

I removed the game from my wishlist a few days ago due to the recasting of Bosco alone. Sybil potentially being invisible yet and the censorship just re-enforces my decision on the matter. I feel no need to support skunkape with a purchase of this or their future products if this is an indication of how they handle things.

Anyone who purchased this and is displeased with the recent findings really should demand a refund.

I'm going to suggest a radical idea, a conclusion I've arrived at because that's literally what the developers said, and there's no real evidence to the contrary (rather than conspiratorial guesswork):

They made those changes because they personally wanted to, and they've grown since they made the original, and don't feel comfortable with those unchanged bits anymore.

So the devs themselves are those mythical "They're catering to the perpetually outraged who don't even play these games" people.

If you don't wish to support them because of that, I suppose you can get the original if you owned it already through telltale, or you pay more now.
