UPDATE: The first No Man's Sky update is now out!
It's a much-awaited bundle of fixes, as well as compatibility and performance improvements and you can grab it now via GOG Galaxy auto-updates, or with the newest offline installers.

No Man's Sky a massive science-fiction game set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. Note that the game takes place in one persistent PC universe, shared across GOG and Steam.

In an intergalactic society, only the few set off towards the stars — explorers, those unafraid, those with nothing to lose. They set off never to come back as far as any of us are concerned. And thus, we still look up at an infinite sky, now within our reach, yet still untouched — a no man's land, a No Man's Sky.

No Man's Sky promises discovery of an infinite, uncharted universe. Its billions of stars, planets, unknown living creatures, breathtaking sights and lonely wastelands — all seamlessly connected — gradually getting catalogued by explorers drawn to the distant mysteries of the horizon, eager to leave a permanent mark in their wake.

The frontier is merciless and dangerous. Exposed to a universe of extremities in your fragile suit and ship, you'll need resources and upgrades to get far — as well as the means to stand your ground in a fight. Whether you journey to the center of it all or seek out the farthest reaches of existence, the trip will not be simple or dull. You'll catalogue things unseen, discover alien artifacts and reveal the greatest mysteries of the universe. If you survive.

Calibrate your suits for extreme insomnia, reach out and touch the No Man's Sky, DRM-free on GOG.com!
I haven't had any issues running NMS so I can't comment on it, but first impressions otherwise:

-It's good at what it wants to be, which isn't Mass Effect 4. I am not surprised that a lot of folks are disappointed after watching the gameplay previews etc. and seeing what they wanted to see rather than what the developer showed them.

-UI is clunky and doesn't handle non-standard control schemes well. Game in general suffers from consolitis.

-Could use a better new player experience; fixing some of the bugs related to that should be critical priority (i.e. lol preorders lol)

-Game looks great, and pulls off the stranger-in-a-strange-land thing better than anything I've played before.

-Works just fine offline from the standalone installer, I'm "Explorer" and options shows that I'm disconnected from the mothership. Being able to rename myself and have multiple user profiles are something that will hopefully come in a future update.

I give it a bell-curve rating of 3.5 or 4 out of 5, plus another point if the launch-day teething issues get fixed in a timely manner. Remember kids, this isn't a AAA game, it's a highly stylized and indie game that a lot of folks decided really ought to be a AAA game.

elgonzo: I am not sure what sort of revolution you are eluding to. The thing you describe as revolutionary was done already a long time ago. For example Frontier 2: Elite, which was released about 23 years ago, running on old Amiga (AGA) systems (and other platforms). I guess, what you alluding to is the more or less seamless transition between space flight and planet walking. But i am not sure whether that would be revolutionary either...

styggron: Love FE:2
Also love Evochron Mercenary which also has seamless transitions between space and planet

Nice very and very sensible conclusions.

styggron: Excellent review yes, thank you Zoidberg.
Not really a review (it should come later) but a review of the port more precisely. But you're welcome.

Gersen: Starbound
Thanks but i pass that .

AAA label doesn't really mean anything. 60€ does. Don't be surprised when 60€ released gets judged by 60€ standards.

tinyE: Is it me, or does elgonzo come off like HAL? :P

Every time I read a post of his, I hear it in that voice.
Think of the B-9 robot from Lost In Space, and you would be a bit closer to reality... d-;

Fair point, and I'll concede that the developer is one of the ones banging the AAA drum. If there's ever going to be a valid argument that price should evaluated as part of the game experience, this is it. It'll be interesting to see how Hello Games responds to the issues. Hopefully faster than Egosoft, for their sake.

Yep, although it was also certainly hyped like a AAA game as well. Not much wonder people are complaining.
Sorry I can't remember which review I was looking at as I've read so many but there were a few that said the PC version was designed from the group up and was not a port.

Now I don't know if this is correct but it did surprise me a great deal. I pretty much went

Painted_Doll: Is there any game in the Gog catalog that similar to NMS and don't requires a power plant PC ?
For space travel... I'd think the X series... For raw amount of area to explore, Sacred Gold is really big. For survival, Don't Starve. Actually, Rebel Galaxy fits in somewhat close, although it's all in space...

From what I've read about the controls and key remapping on the PC, I think that's probably... inaccurate.

Indeed.

B0SC0: Just a note folks,

Please ensure that your drivers are up to date, and that VC2013 C++ and VC2010 Service Pack 1 redistributables are installed. These are included with the installers, but it doesn't hurt to double check.

We're keeping an eye on this and will aim to get any patch or fixes out ASAP.

Also, the patch deployed on Steam is specifically a Steam related issue and does not affect our version.
Well since my question was not answered, I guess it's safe to assume Hello Games can not directly upload a patch to Galaxy and does not have access to the new patching system.

The beta patch was released on Steam an hour or more ago and it's nowhere to be seen on GOG. That's rather bad that a major game releasing on GOG this year isn't using this new system. Either that or it's even worse and were being ignored by Hello Games.

Serves me right. I thought that GOG would be more inclined towards helping indie developers than mainstream Steam is. It's funny actually, having NMS brand all over the GOG Galaxy for this weekend... ...sad.
Reason #134 NOT to pre-order games.

I'm waiting for BOTH a sale and most of the bugs & performance hiccups to be cleaned up before buying this one.

Less to do with it being beta, more to do with GOG lagging behind Steam... when there is no reason for it.
