Blizzard Entertainment and GOG.COM have teamed up to rerelease select classic Blizzard games, beginning with Diablo®, Blizzard’s legendary 1996 action role-playing game that introduced players to the harsh—and deeply rewarding—world of Sanctuary.

The original Diablo® is available now via digital distribution for the first time ever on GOG.COM. Players looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.

Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, and a host of bug fixes. Players can choose either version of the game from a launcher.

tfishell: Do you buy here because of DRM-free? Because obviously Steam has far greater Linux support.
Yes I do, it would just be really great to have the best of both worlds and looking at the prices here, it shouldn't be such an absurd thought.
Still not a fan of Steam in spite of their good deeds regarding Linux, the only thing I use it for is Tabletop Simulator (multi-player).

CharlesGrey: Consider for a moment that maybe that copy you bought back then was underpriced. :P

I mean, I can see your point, but the game seems to be selling like hotcakes, and when a service or product sells well, then the price is either too low or "just right".

Klumpen0815: Yes, but I mean, they only seem to have included this community fix
http://www.strangebytes.com/index.php/projects/1-diablo-1-windows-7-vista-patch=60
and made an installer, that's well paid then.

Both Remastered Bioshocks were 5€ at launch each with the classic version included as well.
Fair enough, I'm not saying this is the deal of the year, from the buyer's perspective. In the end the value of the game is highly subjective anyway -- I'm sure quite a few big Diablo fans out there would still have bought it at its original full price. But I do think, at the very least, it's worth more than those 2 bucks you paid back then for your copy.

I suspect the final price point on GOG was mostly decided by Activision/Blizzard anyway, and they'll get the lion's share of the profits. And GOG has all sorts of additional costs to cover, which go beyond the efforts you described in your post. In any case, with the relatively high base price, they've got plenty of wiggle room for the inevitable future discounts.
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly, creeping
Left its seeds while I was, sleeping
And the vision, that was planted in my brain... still remains

That cover is awful . XD
I really like Disturbed but man, they laid a turd there. They drained all the life out of that song.

Now that I think of it, I've never heard a really good cover of a Simon and Garfunkel song. Maybe it's the material itself.

Disturbed's cover is crap indeed.

While I realize that once more the sanctity of the place has been fouled and I heard the call to arms, I'm pretty torn here. Really'd love to play D1 or D2 again, but it undoubtedly would eat so much time. Argh, watching the delicious D1 streams of late didn't help either...
Anyone know if this comes with the Inferno or was it Hellfire add-in, I forget? I didn't see any mention of it in the description.

Well i must be weird then, because i never knew Disturbed before, not a fan of their music, but that cover blew me away.

And i can live with that :p.

Diablo 2 is a real time sink, Diablo 1 on the other hand is quite short. A single solo playthrough can easily be completed in a couple days only.

It's the base game only, the Hellfire expansion pack is not included.

Right, maybe D1 would scratch the itch... but then, since Diablo dropped here I've been thinking about the grand old time I've had with my Necromancer build in D2. Must. Not. Install. I need to step outside I guess, look at trees and birds and shit to ground myself again. Jesus.

Difference in taste is beautiful.
Diablo got released 3 days ago and it already reached page 4 of all-time best selling games on GOG with spot #179. I wonder how long will it take to hit the page 1? >:D

Interestingly enough the witcher 2 sold and the witcher 1 sold more copies on GOG than the witcher 3? Does games given away by GOG count as 'games sold'?
