Blizzard Entertainment and GOG.COM have teamed up to rerelease select classic Blizzard games, beginning with Diablo®, Blizzard’s legendary 1996 action role-playing game that introduced players to the harsh—and deeply rewarding—world of Sanctuary.

The original Diablo® is available now via digital distribution for the first time ever on GOG.COM. Players looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.

Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, and a host of bug fixes. Players can choose either version of the game from a launcher.

adamsinger77: No linux support. :(
I remember when this came out it forced me to switch to Windows.
Don't really wanna go back to Windows again.
See https://github.com/diasurgical/devilutionX

GOG should have used that to make a Linux release, especially since they could ask Blizzard to be on board with it. But GOG's Linux efforts are lacking. Ever since they released some games for Linux wrapping them in Wine (which was an extra effort), they only do some DosBox wrapped releases.

Taking an open engine and releasing for Linux - isn't something they did so far, even though they clearly could go the extra length to do it.

Definitely unexpected. I would be more delighted of Starcraft though (doesn't have to be the HD remake, but I would say yes to that too).

Matewis: Anycone care to comment on what D1 can offer to someone who has only played the 2nd game, and played it to death already? At first glance, D2 seems like an all-round improvement on D1?
I think the first Diablo has a better, darker, atmosphere. And a great (grim) soundtrack.

On the gameplay side, Diablo 2 wins though. I recall being frustrated by both melee and ranged combat in Diablo (ranged attacks would keep missing moving targets, and melee fighting was stupid "he who is more powerful and has more health, wins"-contest, at least against bosses), but I think Diablo 2 fixed them.

Also, Diablo 2 has more varied classes you can play. Diablo has more generic "melee fighter, archer or spellcaster", IIRC.

I just purchased it to play with a friend. however when using battlenet i get a message that my port 6112 is not open. I opened the port in my routers port forwarding but this doesn't work. Anybody any tip?

Did you open it in your local firewall?

Are you using the classic version, or the "updated" one? If I read properly, multiplayer only works on the classic version.

rmaxwell: So a friend has been asking me for this game. He was a huge fan of the original. I started with D2 & LOD.
We play D3 and D2 from time to time. When I saw Diablo 1 on GoG.. I knew, I had to have it.

It works flawlessly without any errors or problems.

The one caveat is that for using Battlenet via the classic version, you MUST port forward UDP 6112 through your router.
You may not be able to create or join battlenet games otherwise. You will recieve an error message if it is not properly configured. After this minor change, you should no longer get the "unable to connect" error that appears when trying to use Battlenet.

Now I must return to stop Diablo and his minions...
This didn't work for me, tried everything the internet offered :(

Apparently the updated one supports LAN multiplayer.

Just disable firewall?

Well, I wouldn't suggest disabling your FW. But maybe just temporarily for a few seconds for testing. But you should be able to open outgonig and incoming traffic to/from specific apps on designated ports.
Man, I still have my Diablo and Hellfire CD's. I play them in a VM. Still tempted to grab this though to install on Win10 and have no CD, etc.
Ok. Now where is Axiom Verge?
Now if we could only get the hilarious Swedish dub from the PS1 version included in the GOG release ...
this is a great day indeed
