Blizzard Entertainment and GOG.COM have teamed up to rerelease select classic Blizzard games, beginning with Diablo®, Blizzard’s legendary 1996 action role-playing game that introduced players to the harsh—and deeply rewarding—world of Sanctuary.

The original Diablo® is available now via digital distribution for the first time ever on GOG.COM. Players looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.

Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, and a host of bug fixes. Players can choose either version of the game from a launcher.

HypersomniacLive: Question - is "Bestselling" (all times or not) based on copies sold or money made?
AFAIK some blue in the past stated that it meant numbers, not money. Believable if you look at the movements during sales IMO.
Game freezes up in menu during recording with Ocam. Other times, I click
run from the launcher, and then it doesn't run, and I have to reboot GOG galaxy
just to get the play button to show again...

Whafehiafehpfaefefphphphp!

I'm almost speechless. I've always thought and said "never say never" when it comes to any company's games potentially showing up on GOG.com at some point in time in the future, and you've had some stellar surprise releases in the past that people thought and said "would never come here" with or without elaborating reasons for their opinions. I've always had less "absolute" views as we simply do not know and can not make any absolute claims guaranteed to stand up perpetually in this regard.

Nonetheless, there are some games, and some entire company's that are reasonable to speculate are extremely unlikely to see on GOG now if ever, and I've definitely speculated that Blizzard would be one of them for a variety of reasons, mostly business related in the past. That logic still holds true, but every now and then a surprise comes along regardless of probabilities and business justification, competition, care-factor etc.

I have to admit, this is the most shocking release I've ever seen come to GOG in terms of surprise factor, with further releases speculated in the announcement. Talk about "Didn't see that coming"...

This is a tremendous victory GOG! Congrats for winning Blizzard to the DRM-free revolution, and bringing this game back from the dead!
Holy smoke. Personally, I missed the original (and almost all of Blizzard's stuff) and am not totally sold on the aRPG thing in general but I've got to say, Blizzard coming here was about the last thing that I'd have expected.

Here's to hoping that Starcraft shows up here someday. Always wanted to give it a go, but not badly enough to deal with Blizzard's services or try to seek out a disk version.

EDIT: typo (I guess that Bestseeling is based on neither).
I thought "Bestselling (all time)" in the catalog meant copies, and (what used to be) "Popular" or "Bestselling" meant most amount of money made within a certain time frame.

I don't have a source handy but we know Warcraft 1 and 2 (and presumably 2's expansion) are coming.

Love this game!! It's only been a day and I'm about halfway, deep in catacombs. Anyone get the multiplayer working??
I can't connect to online which is a big bummer. something about my 6112 ports
Finally, a worthwhile release on gog!

MatrixRaven: No. Both Diablo II and Starcraft are currently available directly from Blizzard.
avatar
LootHunter: But Diablo II is not free.
None of this is free...
avatar
IwubCheeze: Yup, same with Warcraft 3. Still, we might be able to see Warcraft 1 and 2 come here..............maybe. I do recall a while ago Blizzard wasn't planning on doing anything with them because they were too outdated or something along those lines.
avatar
keeveek: It is confirmed Warcraft 1 and 2 are going to be released on GOG
That is really cool. I will instabuy those.

They're redoing WCIII with updated graphics like they did with Starcraft. I prepurchased it last year and it's supposed to be out before the end of this year. They put it in the Blizzard Launcher and everything.

First StarCraft IS free.

samuraigaiden: D1 is a more focused, in many ways simpler game, but the setting and atmosphere are unbeatable. Also, better music.

timppu: I think the first Diablo has a better, darker, atmosphere. And a great (grim) soundtrack.

On the gameplay side, Diablo 2 wins though. I recall being frustrated by both melee and ranged combat in Diablo (ranged attacks would keep missing moving targets, and melee fighting was stupid "he who is more powerful and has more health, wins"-contest, at least against bosses), but I think Diablo 2 fixed them.

Also, Diablo 2 has more varied classes you can play. Diablo has more generic "melee fighter, archer or spellcaster", IIRC.
I see, cool thanks. Don't know if I'll check it out then, but I'm definitely going to check out that soundtrack :)

avatar
timppu: Definitely unexpected. I would be more delighted of Starcraft though (doesn't have to be the HD remake, but I would say yes to that too).
Lost Vikings for me, 1 and 2 :) But yes, Starcraft too. I really, really don't want to have to play those old single player classics on battlenet.
low rated
Now that the impulse buyers are through, can we get it for a proper price in a sale?
It's just way too expensive. I'd only consider paying that if it had become multi-platform, true HD and with Hellfire included.

I got this game 18 years ago already for 2€ in a magazine.

Don't get me wrong, it's great, but way overpriced.

I just tried to play on the battle.net. First I got the same warning (chat only), then I locked out and locked in again, and then everything worked fine.
I NEVER thought I'd see the day when a Blizzard title becomes available on GOG. Just wow!
