StingingVelvet: A well trained woman using particular techniques could kick an average guy's ass
True, but by definition so could 50% of men, without training or techniques, which seems basically the point to me.

Starmaker: If, in the game, women are generally weaker than men, you reflect it by creating female NPCs with lower strength, not by penalties.
I don't even know why there's still a discussion after this, this seems to be a great solution that should work for everyone.
I was actually in favor of gender specific stat caps during character creation, but this is much better, so thanks for the new perspective.

LootHunter: Whoa, whoa. Realism (or to be more accurate plausibility) of RPG power fantasy is exactly in that both men and women are 10000% overpowered. And because in RL on average women are weaker than men physically, they also weaker if both are being overpowered. What "modern feminists" demand IS that men would be 10000% OP and women 11000% OP. So that strength of both being the same. Which is of course also possible in some fantasy world, but that is exactly why it is female power fantasy, not "realism in any shape or form" as you put it.
avatar
StingingVelvet: Really depends how it's handled. A well trained woman using particular techniques could kick an average guy's ass, or even a moderately trained guy (like Catwoman beating up thugs for example). A woman with the right equipment and tactics can realistically take out a bunch of less prepared guys (like an assassin game). Also in fantasy settings you have magic and whatnot, and in super futuristic settings there's probably gene therapy and higher technology like a super suit that evens out strength or whatever.
But the thing is that we are talking about average charactristics for both men and women. The whole argument about Arcanum is if sex adds bonuses/penalties analogus to the ones that exist in RL - is this realism or not.

Obviously there can be a woman who has strength and speed far above average for woman and thus being able to hold her ground against average man and even against average trained man. But statistically such women are extremely rare.

StingingVelvet: At the end of the day I guess my point is that in a lot of game genres and settings I don't think it matters too much if women characters are presented as equal warriors. Only time I kind of roll my eyes at it are in stuff like the new Battlefield, but even there apparently women served on the front line in Russia, which I did not know about before. Learn something new everyday. Still, front line British women in the multiplayer will be a bit immersion-breaking.
Again, it is simply a question of statistics. For about 9mil infantry in Soviet Army there was just one infantry brigade with 5k women. There were of course more women in Soviet Army, but they were snipers, medics, pilots and other corps where pure physical strength is not that important.

But so what? Can't you just assume if you're playing as a woman in a video game she is one of the rare ones? Or is so well trained it doesn't matter? I don't see the issue. Only time I would see a problem is with a historical setting, but whether it's 5,000 or 5,000,000 women WERE on the front lines in Russia apparently, so just imagine you're playing one of those. No problem.

Now female front line fighters in Normandy, that's a little weird.

The argument is that the rare ones still top out at ~8/10 compared to a rare male at 10/10 in terms of strength/speed.
After reading that topic, I felt like we need to save females from feminists.

Feminism is sexisim at its core. They start with noble ideas like "females should not be ashamed of who they are and should have equal rights" and then force women to think they have qualities they do not possess and that they should have "better" rights than men.

I am against all kinds of discriminations. Feminism included.

About the topic, Dragon Age Origins and DA2 might be interesting. Also Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

It is not a question if I play a woman, it is a question if everyone plays as woman. On each side.

As you said yourself - if infantry consists of women by half or more it looks very strange. Though not as strange as CoD WW2 blacks in German Army, of course.

Engerek01: force women to think they have qualities they do not possess
The thing is that some women possess qualities to best men in some areas. However, modern feminism says that all women possess such qualities and if they are not in positions as high as men, than it is all men fault.

Yes but why assume the male you're fighting is a 10? Just assume you're a specially trained and naturally gifted female fighting an average or slightly above average male. You guys are creating the scenario where it's silly so you can complain about it when there are many scenarios where it's fine.

I don't think it's about the male you're fighting, but about the male you could play yourself and the implication that comes with the same maximum stats for female and male characters, regardless of how high on that scale the NPCs score.
Fwiw I agree with you, for a moment there just seemed to be a miscommunication to me I tried to address. Might have been a mistake on my part.

toxicTom: But somehow the "modern" feminists don't show much interest in the situation of women i.e. in Saudi Arabia or even India.
coz its dangerous and time consuming.
[irony]Why would they do so, if they can simply bully white men?[/irony]

The way I see it, the situation is a bit remote. It's not something that western feminists have to deal with on an everyday basis, and hence not something that we choose to focus our efforts on, when there's other work to be done.

With that said, we do care about such issues; we just have other things to worry about that are of more immediate concern.

Also, there are feminists in those countries, who obviously do care about those issues. A simple Google search, for example, brings up a case in 2011 where a Saudi woman defied social norms and posted a video of her driving. There also comes up a case in 2018 of women's rights activists being arrested in those countries. This sort of feminism is different from what you see in western countries, simply because the women there have different issues to deal with.

In those countries, English is not the main language. If you want to really learn about feminism in those areas of the world, you probably need to search the part of the Internet that is in the language spoken there (Arabic in the case of Saudi Arabia).

(Has anyone made a game about being a woman in Saudi Arabia or some other Muslim country? That might be interesting to see.)

She didn't defy social norms. She broke the law. Shitty and horrid as that law is. Women are truly oppressed in most middle Eastern countries. At least the ones I've been to.

Fairfox: does anyone hav moar gamies with strong female characters? personal lee i do want to kno an' it wuld be kind 'n' helpful x
Oh, a much more straight-forward and easy to answer question! Not counting games with character customisation, and only including games where the protagonist is the strong female character in question, and there aren't multiple characters that you switch between:

Beyond Good & Evil
Blackwell games
Broken Age
Someone mentioned Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, but I found the whole slavery/Stockholm syndrome bit somewhat uncomfortable.
Legend of Kyrandia: Hand of Fate
Life is Strange
Mirror's Edge
Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet
Shardlight
Syberia, perhaps, but I found the game itself as dull as a rock
Transistor
The Longest Journey (and Dreamfall as well, probably, but I didn't find the game itself as much fun)
Urban Chaos (you might find the tank controls take a bit getting used to, though)

Yeah, I'm mostly an adventure game fan, but it's those sort of games that have characters and story shine!
