Those gimmicks have a knack of nicely enhancing gameplay in subtle ways once all the hyperbolic rubbish about revolutionising gameplay subsides. The Wii motion controllers were marketed as letting you mimic what your in-game avatar does, but once that was proven as bullshit (and given the space restrictions of many people's living rooms), the Wiimote turned out to be a very capable mouse replacement. In fact, I'm surprised we didn't see more RTS and top-down CRPGs like Titan Quest or Diablo-likes on the Wii.
Likewise, the Wii U's second screen was marketed as having the potential to revolutionise gaming, but when the fuss died down, it turned out that the second screen wasn't going to revolutionise gaming, but rather be a useful way of conserving main screen real estate and avoid unnecessary switching between game screens and maps or inventories.
