Mortius1: Can Linux (with WINE) do a better job at playing old games than Windows?
In many cases it can. But it depends on a lot of things.

I remember giving my little sister a USB stick with Linux + Wine on it to play diablo 2, because it didn't run well on her Windows.
A big giveaway for a nice reason, thank you!
Personally, I've been alternating between Windows 7 and occasionally Kubuntu.

I'd like to enter for:

Arma: Cold War Assault + Arma: Gold Edition + Arma 2: Combined Operations
SWAT 4: Gold Edition
Blade Runner
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition
Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition
XIII
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Game of the Year Edition Deluxe
Rayman Origins
Jazz Jackrabbit Collection
Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Collection
UnderRail
Dust: An Elysian Tail
Dead Space
State of Mind

Merry Christmas!
Merry christmas / Happy holidays to all of you and thank you adamhm for this amazing giveaway ! :D

Mortius1: GOG advertises Tomb Raider 2 as explicitly unsupported on Windows 10. I'm unsure exactly why, but given the hoops I've had to jump through to get other games to work in Win 10 it might be something unfixable.
It really depends on the old game. Dos box works pretty well under Wine or Windows, at least some of the time.

Otherwise, you can run older versions of windows in a virtual machine on top of Linux (or whatever)

Mortius1: I use windows extensively at work, but not for game playing.

What would bring me to dual-booting linux at home would be an postive answer to the following quesiton.

Can Linux (with WINE) do a better job at playing old games than Windows?

GOG advertises Tomb Raider 2 as explicitly unsupported on Windows 10. I'm unsure exactly why, but given the hoops I've had to jump through to get other games to work in Win 10 it might be something unfixable.

Will I have better luck playing Tomb Raider 2 under WINE?
Sometimes games works better on wine (I once encountered this rare case but I forgot the name of the game) , sometimes more or less the same as on windows (old game such as deus ex or Thief falls in this category), sometimes worse but still playable just fine (skyrim, dishonored) , sometimes a game just won't run or run in unplayable state (gods eater) . Really depends on the game.

On tomb raider 2, I check protondb to see if the game will run on proton (proton is basically wine released and sponsored by valve) and over there people say to play it using wine since it works better. So I guess you can play tomb raider 2 on Linux using wine

There are various resources that'll give you an idea of how well a game will work under wine. Here on gog, we have The "Judas does this run in Wine" thread v1.173, where our very own adamhm reported back in 2016 that Tomb Raider 2 works pretty much "Perfect".

There's also the WineHQ App DB, where the results are less encouraging, as the game get only a "Bronze" rating due to issues with keyboard keys being "sticky". It might be that that's a regression, and that by using an older Wine version, you'll get the nearly perfect experience adamhm described. It might also be that there's an external factor that causes that particular issue, and that you'll either have it or you won't.

So, no sure thing, but worth a try.

Point_Man: I've wanted to try Linux for a while but i think it was your many Linux themed giveaways that got me to finally try Linux a couple of months ago. It's been going pretty well so far. Although as far as gaming is concerned, I've only played games with native Linux ports so far. I haven't tried running anything with Wine yet because I'm a bit worried about issues i might run into and I'm not sure how big the performance hit is going to be. I might try running some games via Wine soon. Though i need to spend some time to learn a bit about how exactly to use Wine.
Why not try some of my Wine wrappers and see how they perform?

Also with the 19.3 update my guide now includes a list with a variety of options for using Wine/Proton that also don't require any Wine knowledge :)

In many cases Wine does work better with older games. Some games work better in Wine due to using old APIs that Microsoft has deprecated and subsequently removed or broken, in other cases they run better because of things like graphics driver differences between Windows & Linux.

In the case of TR2 in particular, I just had a quick look at it using GOGWrap (my generic Wine/Proton wrapper script) with Proton 4.11-11 and it looks like it works fine, more or less. When using the setup tool the main window needs to be moved out of the way (as it did the last time I tested it), but other than that there doesn't seem to be any issues so far.
