ciemnogrodzianin: We should fight the myth that Windows is easier or perfect. Things changed in last years and now all the power of Windows comes from it's popularity and support. As a product, it's just far behind new Linux distros — in terms of performance, security, ease of use etc.
Well, that's the point of my guide & these giveaways :)

matterbandit: First and foremost, thank you adamhm for reaching out to 'linux noobs' such as myself, by providing a beginner's guide and offering so many ressources! Although I consider myself an advanced PC user, I admit that as far as Linux is concerned, I can feel overwhelmed and intimidated. LOL! Using Windows 7 now, but for 2020, I am motivated to learn to use Linux as I do not wish to install Windows 10 when that bell of death comes chiming for my PC.

I'll begin with baby steps over the holidays and install Virtualbox and run Mint within it, just to get a feel for it and see if Linux recognizes my rig's hardware. Already own some games in my GOG library that have a Linux version, so I am eager to test them out!
Virtualbox is a bit limited & you probably won't get many games running in a VM (and those that will run in a VM will have limited performance), but it is a good way to try Mint out and get the hang of it before properly installing it. It's what I did before I started using Mint :)
avatar
BStone: I might try Mint again, this thread makes me want to. I understand your wrappers are 64-bit only though.?
That depends on the game - if it's a 64-bit game then the wrapper for it is also 64-bit.

avatar
BStone: I'm trying Ubuntu right now and this particular distro is getting on my nerves.
Mint is a lot more user-friendly & nicer to use in my experience.

BStone: 1. Since Arma series isn't on GOG (IIRC, Arma2 has DRM)
Arma: CWA/Arma: Gold/Arma 2 are on GOG... or rather, they *were*. But then Gamespy shut down and Bohemia Interactive used Steamworks to replace it, which meant that the GOG releases were pulled. I still have a GOG key for them though which is why they're available in this giveaway :)

Great giveaway again! +1

With Win7 dropping out of support it's indeed a good time to switch my rig to Linux, though I'm bound to evil IE for work reasons to a certain degree. Maybe I'll setup dual boot or get a used second device for this..

I'd be in for
> Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
> Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
> State of Mind
> Blade Runner
> XIII
I'm in for:

> Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition
> Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition

Thx for chance.

I did not realize there was a serious performance hit with Virtualbox, thanks for letting me know. Ideally, I wanted to try dual-booting, but I'm afraid I'll screw something up permanantly as I've never attempted a dual boot before. If I need help along the way, where is the best place for linux noob's to post around here? Do we chat you up directly? Or can we post our questions here? Thx in advance!

Edit: Would some strong hardware negate any performance hit with Virtualbox?

Not in, but since it's a Mint 19.3 thread I might as well ask here.
Some history first. I used some Debian and Knoppix years ago at the university (back when you still had to manually mount a floppy via terminal in order to use it). Last year I decided to actually start using Linux in some day to day cases. So I tried Ubuntu... I've been always wondering why Linux desktop market share is so small, and after 2 months of Ubuntu I realised - oh, that's why :-P. It wasn't exactly a smooth experience to say the least.
So now I'm actually testing Mint, being a little wary knowing it is based on Ubuntu.
The installation went smoothly (keeping it on a external SSD connected to a Laptop with Windows 10 as the base system).

Now my problem (I admit, I've spent only 20 minutes looking for an answer) is as follows. I noticed an effect similar to screen tearing on my monitor connected via HDMI. I updated the Nvidia driver to the one recommended by the system, and now the system can't see my second monitor at all (I'm stuck with laptop screen). Unplugging and plugging the monitor back or turning it off and on results in a short blink on the laptop screen, so I assume that it at least is trying to detect it, but still, only the laptop screen is listed. VGA port works, but that's no help when I get back home, since my TV only has HDMI, and second, I'm not sure if it's actually Nvidia or my integrated Intel Graphics that's running through that.
Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, I was trying to get FO3 to run with Mint 32-bit and gave up, but I will try again with 64-bit.

As to the Arma series: If you have the GOG key and the game(s) does not have DRM (or is Steam-related), I'll go for that! :)

Thanks again adamhm.

An update. After reverting the drivers to the earlier version I still can't use the monitor, even though it (sort of) worked before. Yep, looks like Ubuntu experience 2.0.

A virtual machine might be a good idea for that purpose :)

A virtual machine can help with that - install Windows first and then Mint.

The easiest way to dual boot is to have a second HDD/SSD dedicated to Mint and use the guided option to install to it to that drive, otherwise to have them both share a disk the installer will need to resize Windows' partitions.

You can post questions there :)

matterbandit: Edit: Would some strong hardware negate any performance hit with Virtualbox?
To an extent, but ultimately its graphics performance will still be far slower than real hardware. It is possible to get good performance out of a VM by having a second GPU and dedicating that to the VM, but the problems with that are you need to install a second GPU just for the VM and I've heard that setting up a GPU passthrough can be a PITA.

I don't have any experience with dual-GPU laptops so I can't offer much help, but I have heard that they can be a bit of a hassle, although things are supposed to be a bit better now. There should be a tool for showing which GPU is active and switching between them; check System Settings --> Applets and enable the NVIDIA Prime applet if it isn't already active. You should then see an icon for it in the system tray.

To see if it's detecting the external monitor, try Menu --> Administration --> System Reports --> System information and see if it's shown there. You can also run "xrandr" from a terminal to show the current display outputs and active displays.

Your keyboard should have a function key combination (usually Fn + one of the F keys) for switching between monitors; you could also try using that and seeing what it does.

Another thing is to check with the Nvidia settings panel (which should be found in the system menu - if for some reason the Nvidia settings panel hasn't been installed you can install it manually through the Software Manager) and seeing what that says. You should also add the proprietary graphics drivers PPA for more recent drivers if you haven't already done so.

FO3 is 32-bit so the wrapper should work on a 32-bit system; it's likely that you were just missing some of Wine's dependencies. My common dependencies meta-package should get everything needed but that's only for 64-bit systems... nowadays there's no reason to use a 32-bit install though, unless your system's CPU is so old that it doesn't support 64-bit.

Thank you for this Linux giveaway!

So many interesting games. Some I've been interested in for a long time, others I had to look up and learn about. It was really hard to choose between them. The two maybe entries at the end, reviews suggested they might not be that great. But some reviews were positive, Maybe I'll like them, and I figured if no one else was interested in them for the same reason and I couldn't get my preferred titles...

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
Blade Runner
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition
Steamworld heist
Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition
Tanglewood
Rayman Origins
The Witcher+2
SWAT 4: Gold Edition
TRI: Of Friendship and Madness
Tropico 3 Gold Edition
Dust: An Elysian Tail
Hard West
Stories: The Path of Destinies
Driftmoon
Jaz rabbit 2
State of Mind
XIII
Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive
Deus Ex™ GOTY Edition
UnderRail
System shock 2

Maybes
Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut
Consortium

As a current user of Mint, I don't think it's the distro for me. Too much on my plate right now to switch and try a different distro though.

Yay for Linux specific titles and more Linux compatibility as someone who loves gaming and Linux! I hope GoG makes their launcher work with Linux and/or starts officially supporting Linux. I once submitted a support ticket for getting a game to work in Linux only to be told they don't support it, that I could have my money credited for a new purchase only, but no support. What, no cash back? Well I got it to work thanks to forum help.

" Arma: Cold War Assault + Arma: Gold Edition + Arma 2: Combined Operations "
I can't find this game anywhere on GoG, I've tried multiple different key word searches.

Consortium: Master Edition -> Can only find a Consortium 2019 REBALANCE So unsure what game this is in reference to.

There was other games that looked interesting too. Like the Stalker games. FPS is generally not my favorite genra but I have had alot of fun with some FPS's and so on. It might be nice to get a good FPS to play.

P.S. I may edit my post and change my game preference order a few times :p

That's three games which a lot of people want (me included) and which were pulled from GOG years ago :(

This game? https://store.steampowered.com/app/33900/Arma_2/
I wonder why it would be pulled from GoG sales(clearly still available for download for those who already own it) If it's concerns over piracy, that ships probably long since sailed.
Anyway, DRM free GoG is nice, but Steam is good too if you really want those games and don't win them here.
