As always very generous, and a +1 is thrown your way.

Looks like I have the games I'm most interested in, so don't include me. Elder Scrolls IV and ARMA could have been interesting, but I probably wouldn't play it right away tbh. And I did play Operation Flashpoint back in the day, what later was re-named Arma, and holy hell that game was hard.

Good luck, and I hope some of you try out Linux. I'm basically a total noob, but have been running Linux Mint for many years now, and loving it.

phaolo: I know that Linux is getting better, but it's still far from ideal in my eyes.
And Gog isn't even supporting it in a decent way (Galaxy, anyone?).

adamhm: It'll never be perfect, but then again Windows is far from perfect too & that never will be either. The only way for things to get better is for more people to switch over and give companies more incentive to support Linux - which is happening, albeit slowly, and things are much better now on Linux than they were even just a couple of years ago.
We should fight the myth that Windows is easier or perfect. Things changed in last years and now all the power of Windows comes from it's popularity and support. As a product, it's just far behind new Linux distros — in terms of performance, security, ease of use etc.

My mom uses Lubuntu and I'm quite sure she would have a lot of problems with new Windows. It's also a lot easier to keep system safe and updated if you use Linux.

I'm using Linux for everyday activity, for data analysis and programming. My workflow in Linux is 10x simpler that my workflow at work, where I need to use Windows. Me and most of my coworkers dreams about Linux environment at work, because we know how much simpler it is to use and maintain Linux. Recently we've been migrated to Windows 10, which caused a lot of troubles and took hours (even days in case of some of us); privately I'm migrating to new Linux distro in 15-45 minutes, including backup and installing all programs.

Oh, and most of old games works better under Linux/Wine than under new Windows editions :)

It's just not true anymore that Windows is a better choice for anybody. We just need a bit more momentum for Linux to make world a better place. The main problem today is that most of people just don't know how good and easy today's Linux is and what's the feel of taking full control of your system (in terms of privacy, configuration, updates etc.).

Which desktop do you prefer? I'm using MATE in Mint, but I'm always looking for nice compromise between old-good-gnome look and performance. Is Budgie significantly faster than MATE? Any issues or problems (since it's still quite young project)?

First and foremost, thank you adamhm for reaching out to 'linux noobs' such as myself, by providing a beginner's guide and offering so many ressources! Although I consider myself an advanced PC user, I admit that as far as Linux is concerned, I can feel overwhelmed and intimidated. LOL! Using Windows 7 now, but for 2020, I am motivated to learn to use Linux as I do not wish to install Windows 10 when that bell of death comes chiming for my PC.

I'll begin with baby steps over the holidays and install Virtualbox and run Mint within it, just to get a feel for it and see if Linux recognizes my rig's hardware. Already own some games in my GOG library that have a Linux version, so I am eager to test them out!

In for (in no particular order):

Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition
Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
STALKER: Clear Sky
STALKER: Call of Pripyat
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
State of Mind
Tropico 3 Gold Edition

Happy Holidays to you!
