Telika: Say, as I don't trade, I'm not following this attentively, or caring immensely, so, i certainly missed something mmensely obvious, but... i didn't get how a general politeness rule of "lowest rep gives key first" can't solve most of the issues ?

amok: the best and easiest solution seen in this thread.

Damuna: Just as a word of warning, there's a scammer called Big__McLargeHuge on the loose - note the two underscores. He's spoofing Big_McLargeHuge, an established user, including using his avatar, and it would be quite easy to miss it. I'm passing this on to TheEnigmaticT and Judas, but in the meantime I wanted to warn you guys.

EDIT: Picture comparison.
This shit should be prosecuted :-/

Thanks, he just contacted me, and I got suspicious, as I hadn't heard of him before - and he didn't seem too reliable. He was offering me Rock of Ages. I've blocked and reported him. Damn these scammers.

Edit: I linked a picture of the negotiation before I caught on to him thanks to Damuna and this thread.

The only problem with this is that when somebody contacts you via PM, there appears to be no way to search for them on the forums, and therefore there is no way to discern their reputation or whether they are a reliable member of the community :(.

Unfortunately, I don't know everybody on the forums, and I only became regularly active a fairly short time ago. When people contact me via PM, I have no choice but to trust them unless they exhibit strange behaviour (or my inexplicable sixth sense warns me).

The only real solution I see to this is to trade only with people you know/have talked to on the forums, or ask the person you are trading with to link you to a thread where they have posted so that you can find out more about them. Unfortunately, this puts new users at a significant disadvantage. From now on, I'll ask people to send me their keys first, unless I know that they are trustworthy. At least I have people who can vouch for me in the trading thread.

This whole incident with the scammer(s) makes me sad, but I suppose it was bound to happen eventually. I just hope whoever he/she/they are will get bored eventually and move on to another community (although I don't wish them on any decent community).

I would assume that it's a violation of the ToS to impersonate other users. So, I guess the death penalty applies...

Actually I wouldn't ask them to link you as they could just give you a link to a post of the person they are pretending to be. A better way is to ask them to post in the classifieds right then and there then you can check their rep and date at least.

Or just trade with who you know.

Lol, i only read part of what you said. But in my case, it's not limited to people i have traded with, but also to people i have seen consistently trading.

You are both right with that, of course. :)
But I have met some very nice people on this forum through trading, so that would be a sad option just because there are some bad apples in the bunch.

You, me and everyone who is a regular had to start from scratch and were newbies once. If we have been able to become trusted members, i can't see why the "next generation" of GOG members can't do the same.

The trusted members thing would be beneficial to new members also, as they would learn the reason why they need to gain trust in order to trade, to avoid scamming.
Oh, looks like my would-be scammer is haunting me ;).

Actually I was referring to trading with someone that has rep and/or has been on gog for some time, but I havn't spoken with before and therefore I wouldn't know.

I completly agree with you on the newbies/trusted member distinction.

Shouldn't you be asking the Steam forums if you'll get in trouble for not doing your homework again?
