When you build upon a star...

Starbound, a sandbox action/RPG about settling down on a proceduraly generated universe and exploring its infinite randomness, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac and Linux with a 33% launch discount.

You are a lonely alien, cast away on an unknown planet after your ship and your spacefaring dreams got severely damaged. Now you must start anew, build yourself a home, blast any rude natives to smithereens, and perhaps gradually establish your own colony. Once you repair your trusty spaceship, a vast galaxy of opportunities will open up and your procedurally generated appetite for adventure and exploration will never let up!

Much like the crafty alien protagonist, developers Chucklefish are building and expanding Starbound one feature at a time, shaping it up with the help of their community. The final version is expected to include a proper plot and quests, as well as an array of additional dungeons, bosses, lore, and loot. Which should make the online drop in/drop out co-op all the more cooler, and give the modders some extra toys to play around with in this near-infinite universe.

Build yourself a home on an expansive, procedurally generated universe and make the most out of being Starbound, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 33% discount will last until February 2, 1:59 PM GMT.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.

Want to see the game in development live? Retrograde Tom will be showing it off at Twitch.tv/GOGcom tonight, that is January 28th, at 5pm GMT / 6pm CET / 12pm EST. Tune in!

I hear ya :-\
I love Terraria - so this is right up my alley...only - aren't they a little slow with the updates?

I think, I remember a lot of complaints about a certain lack of development.

Has this lack been overcome?
I read something about this one in a game mag about... maybe two years ago? It actually seemed like it could be an interesting game, and I'm not a diehard Minecraft / Terrarria / whatever game fan.

Curious to see how this one goes. I really like the idea of "questing" both for parts to open up the game world and as something to give players (like me!) who appreciate a sandbox but do enjoy a bit of directed gameplay.

Fairfox: I wonder if they give GOG keys out to people that backed back in the day? I'd love it on GOG but don't want to re-buy.
Of fuck yeah! That's the least they could do when they falsely promised a DRM-free version for a long time.

Pity I couldn't get a refund on the humble store :(
This game should come with a warning for hoarders.

*Oh, nice spear! That lamp looks cool. I know I have dozens of chests full of cobble stone, but I better keep this stack. This looks like a rare item. I don't know what this does, but maybe useful later. Sure I'm gonna store this useless dagger. Grab these seeds. Neat chest, will add it to my collection.*

Be warned, it never ends. ;)

Havent played this for quite some time now, but I checked Steam and the latest patch is from December 16th.

Ah yes, the "we'll post a DRM-free version of the beta as soon as we have a stable version of it" then promptly never do. I'm repeating myself, but...utter douchebags.
***** WHY THIS DEVELOPER SHOULDN'T BE TRUSTED *****

I made the mistake to buy this game in January 2014 as it falsely promised a DRM-Free version which never came (there was even a long thread of complaints about this on their forums.... if they didn't delete it).

So, out of curiosity, I just checked my humble store account and it's still not here....

See pictures attached below.

EDIT: naturally, in 2 years, they changed their page on the humble store so the drm-free version is not more mentioned but early buyers like me got screwed up.

Agreed

Backed it back in April 2013

When the DRM-free build becomes available you can download it here!
I always understood this as "you'll get a drm-free download when the games is done". I'd wait with complaints until release version of the game.

Edit: GOG, fix quoting please.

That's unfortunate. Russian Rouble, on other hand, rose 12% in a week :)

Why should GOG users get a DRM-free version and not the other early buyers?

It's kind of the reverse of the GOG mix "treated as second-class citizens" :o)

HereForTheBeer: Terrariaaaaa!!! Iiiiin!!! Spaaaaaaaaace!!!!

Someone had to say it. ; )

Looks fun. Might pick it up after a couple folks chime in on its progress and playability.

mintee: this made me laugh!

I like the looks of this game but can anyone tell me if the pvp is separated from the regular landscape? in other words, will I be ganked while just doing my own thing crafting, farming etc?
Terraria did it pretty well, you need to turn on PvP yourself to be targeted by others.
Shit!
I bought it one year ago on Humble Bundle (a DRM-Free version was promised) and all I got was a ******* steam key. This isn't fair...

It's the only correct way!

GOG is the first place outside Steam where you can download Starbound, so maybe they'll add it to Humble accounts soon. Besides, Steam version doesn't actually require Steam to run.
