misteryo: Again, what the hell are you guys going on about? How can it install without your permission? I seriously don't understand what you think is going to happen. Or could happen.

Please explain your fears.

Rusty_Gunn: Simple, be installed with game without user consent or control.

Fears: that Galaxy won't allow to me dl the game/patch installers & use the Steamish "install-from-web" approach
I also have no need for

Got it. I have not played AVP yet, only the Witcher Adventure Game that does this. but I knew ahead of time it would do this as well as that bothe the game adn the client were beta. So I did feel in control.

The devs have said that when fully functional Galaxy will allow the downloading of installers, doing away with the need for being online to install.
Is it that hard for the installers to just place two icons on desktop - one for singleplayer and other for multiplayer?

budejovice: It's annoyed me since Witcher Adventure Game, when it phoned home to update Galaxy when I tried to launch the game, when I didn't want Galaxy in the first place, and it locked me out of the game because the internet connection was too slow.
avatar
Gersen: For Witcher Adventure Game like for Double Dragon just click the exe in the folder and the game will totally bypass Galaxy and won't try to connect.
Yes that's true but the whole point of alpha is too leave a good impression. It's my way of saying hey GOG add this to the list of fixes please.
avatar
misteryo: I chose where it installed. I don't know what people are freaking out about.
The game asks you but Galaxy doesn't. I want Galaxy to be good but in it's current state it feels like bloatware. You know those extras the a lot of free programs install that you don't want.

paladin181: The Galaxy client stub that is installed with AVP and Witcher (and I guess Double Dragon) is not currently optional, but I'm confident that will be addressed upon completion of the full Galaxy client. The Galaxy Client stub is NOT required to play these games, and can be ignored if you do not wish to do multiplayer.
I'm sure it will too, but considering GOG are planning to ditch the downloader for this thing, I would like some improvements.
Guys, I always thought that Galaxy was going to be something you downloaded and installed separately like the Desura client.

That's what Aliens vs Predator is doing. One shortcut for singleplayer and another one for galaxy multiplayer.
yeah but it was buggerred initially if i recall

Magmarock: ...GOG are planning to ditch the downloader for this thing...
They are not planning to "ditch" the downloader, they are planning to integrate the downloader into Galaxy, among many other things.

And it will be, probably starting from beta and up. For now, as alpha, their priority is strictly multiplayer, matchmaking, code optimization etc

Not for me. Worked like a charm, ever since I got my key for the game. The problem is that AVP is bundling GOG Galaxy in its installer, with no option to avoid installation and no option to change Galaxy's directory. Other than that, you don't need Internet to either install or play the game.

Actually for me it was buggerred initially. It only installed the multiplayer icon to desktop and not the singleplayer

Breja: I swear, if that crap installs itself on my computer without asking I will never buy anything more on GOG.

Rusty_Gunn: Same here, Galaxy sounds exactly like what I DO NOT want on my 'Puter.
Yeah we get enough stuff trying to install on to our P.C's, I mean look at how many programs wan't to change your Browser and Add Toolbars and this is free and that is free. What a load of crap, that's what you end up having on your P.C.
Then people sit there and say (Why is my PC so slow???).

And I never said Galaxy will auto-install,if anyone thinks that then effin re-read the posts above properly...

Guys, AvP was offered for free back then with the explicit condition that it was for testing multiplayer. They bundle a version of galaxy with it to test the multiplayer functionality.

This is different from the actual galaxy client, that will come out when it comes out. When it does, eventually we'll have a client that does the downloading (either current installers or steam like, user choice) that we can install or not. I don't think this is that strange, and GOG have repeatedly explained this. And yes, while companies do lie quite often, I'll trust GOG on this.

What I do have a problem with, is the "multiplayer through galaxy" part. I'd much rather if their multiplayer approach involved LAN play, somehow, so we don't have to depend on GOGs servers to play it in the future. But that's a separate discussion, I believe.

So the Galaxy client will work also as the standalone installer downloader? That would be great news, because earlier certain someone in the forum (not GOG staff) claimed the client will not have that functionality, but only be used for Steam-like simultaneous download&install.

I presumed it would be possible to download the standalone installer only with the web page interface, http (as the current Downloiader client will be discontinued as well, apparently).

Do you have a link to some blue stating that (standalone installers can be downloaded with the Galaxy client)?

They've said that multiple times, in blue posts, but remembering a speific thread is hard at the moment. Check the latest Galaxy related thread.

EDIT: Found one! I'm so awesome.

Ok thanks. I have read those long Galaxy threads only haphazardly as I don't have that big personal interest to the client (but then I am not against it either, and I feel it may be important for GOG's survival to bring one). I was only a bit worried whether downloading standalone installers will become harder. Nice that they'd support that option too with it.

Oh, I don't follow it closely either. But they have mentioned this several times, so I figured that thread would have one such statement.
high rated
I've passed this thread on to a person that's actually responsible for the Galaxy client and am hoping for a reply soon. In the meantime:

- the client is FULLY optional - you won't have to use it
- Galaxy will give you some extra functionalities (auto update, online multiplayer) and to use those, it will have to be installed and running
- the thing that installs as the client, from what I understand, is just the functionality that lets a game connect to Galaxy (if you install it). It's kind of like having a USB port in your laptop when you don't have a USB device, it ain't gonna do nothin' til you hook it up right.
- finally, right now, the Galaxy Client still in alpha/beta versions - so if you're testing, things might get buggy.

[edit] I see a more in-depth post appeared :) it explains the issue more thoroughly!
