This reminded me of Her ... :D

Now the question is, how does she feel about you? ;)

I hope not the same as the AI in that Ex Machina movie though. :D

DryMango: It's just like those licensing agreements whenever you update a computer game or update your computer or Playstation 4 or whatever. People don't want to read through that crap, so the EULA or privacy statement means nadda to them.
Indeed. The problem is, now we have to take the EULA seriously word by word for Windows 10 because this is where a lot of users are pointing fingers.

avatar
Treasure: Thanks for offering to help. I'd prefer however to see Win10 for myself and decide whether I'm going to use it in the future or not based on my own impressions, especially as everyone's preferences are different and some people might like what others don't -and I'm also going to use the Greek version of the OS, which will obviously have some differences with the English one (e.g. lack of Cortana in the Greek version). I'll keep in mind that both you and JMich are Win10 users though, so that if I encounter something I can't figure out by myself, I can ask either of you. Anyways, thanks again.
Alright, ask me whenever you wish. Oh, and I totally forgot. I was able to operate a Windows 10 virtual machine on Oracle's VirualBox in Windows 10. Yes, you read that right. I operated a Windows 10 virtual machine inside Windows 10. Boredom in a nutshell.

Brasas: Ergo EULA and customer service confusion, dissatisfaction, and outright distrust - but a lot of shiny stuff to keep execs entertained.
They should address this issue a little bit faster indeed. Sure they're snapping in millions, but they could do snapping more of them.

zeroxxx: I don't give a fuck either about minority's bitching about retarded facts you brought up.

Object and reject all you want, but you'll always be minority in the end.

100+ millions speaks the numbers.

Period.
well, 100 millions speaks a lot. its going a lot worse than microsoft expected, for a free upgrade. I'm not sure but i think win7 did better in same period of time. Oh and i'm pretty sure this 100 millions come with pcs on store shelves included =)

PookaMustard: What I agree on is that there needs to be more distinction between the product (Windows 10) and the services (OneDrive, Mail, Cortana, etc), and to be made clear that if you're really paranoid, you can only opt in for the product and opt out for the services.
Can you really separate this? AFAIK, at least with the Home edition, you can't even set telemetry to the lowest level ("security"). Only to "basic". And "basic" will report "apps" you run, at least if they crash. Default setting is "full" which includes a LOT of data - how many people out there are even able to change that setting? Even know about it? (*)

Also with Home you can't even encrypt your drive with Bitlocker in a local account (*). Your key will be "backed up" on MS servers.

As for the "opt-out": It's well known that Windows 10 talking to MS servers can't be turned off completely. And since the transmissions are encrypted, nobody really knows what data is sent. It's known that some of it contains at least the machine-ID (*).

My computer is an extension of my brain, so I want full control of it. Would you trust MS with your personal diary, even if they promise not to read it? I wouldn't.
I am currently sticking with Windows 7 although I may be forced to update to Windows 10 thanks to Microsoft deciding to not support Windows 7 on Skylake processors anymore (an announcement which only happened AFTER I upgraded to a nice shiny new Skylake Core i5 :( )

JMich: Thank you. I was just wondering if the profiling GOG does went against your principles or not.
Any profiling GOG does, I consider mild/minor enough not to worry about.
avatar
vemin: copy of what?
avatar
JMich: Copy of the data they profiled you. A store that has profiled you while you were using it doesn't magically lose said data once you stop using it, and they may contact you every now and again with offers they think you'd like.

avatar
vemin: when you are not using win10 means you are not using your pc(well providing that you dont have other os)
avatar
JMich: As you said, you can use a different OS, or a different PC. Does that mean windows 10 keep listening to what you do then?

avatar
vemin: i can use my pc w/o "shop" you mentioned before. but pc w/o Os?
avatar
JMich: Depends on your definition of OS. I have had cases where I needed to use a computer to see if a disk/ram/monitor was working, and the only software run by it was the BIOS itself. So depending on the definition of an OS, yes, it is possible to use a PC w/o one.

vemin: you still fail to get difference, ok try again!

JMich: I blame the current mafia game, I'm moderating, not playing, thus don't have a place to argue ;)

ncameron: The way you write that, you seem to think I'm going against my principles in some way here. I'm not sure why.

JMich: Thank you. I was just wondering if the profiling GOG does went against your principles or not.
well i thought profiled data is stored for as much time as needed, not sure why you are telling me this,
\\
This thread is about win10, so using different os is another topic, I really wanted to upgrade to it a year ago, but when more facts emerged I changed my mind, in frustration
\\
you are right hat the difference can be made as large or as small as one wishes to, but i gave strict examples of profilig I tolerate and not.
avatar
ncameron: Any profiling GOG does, I consider mild/minor enough not to worry about.
Yes, I figured so. Thus why I was asking about it, just to make sure. No worries.
avatar
vemin: well i thought profiled data is stored for as much time as needed, not sure why you are telling me this,
So why say that they only profile you while you are using them (store, webpage etc) when they do keep the data? No longer using said data mining doesn't mean they lose the data, they still have it, even if you are not using it anymore. And who knows, depending on how the store/page is set up, if one of your friends uses it, they may still be able to profile you, even though you are not using it.

vemin: but when more facts emerged I changed my mind, in frustration
Visit the My Digital Life forums, and do a bit of reading there. Members of both camps, but quite a lot of useful tools to customize Windows (and Microsoft products in general) to your liking.

True. You like these specific ones and don't like those specific ones. Not sure one can draw an assumption from those examples on whether you'll like a not mentioned one, but that is quite off topic.

That argument is complete crap. That's like saying: Shit is awesome, billions of flies can't be wrong...

As usual, have this article about what data is being sent to Microsoft from a Windows 10 PC that made thousands of connections while offline, analyzing the logs and all. (only to find out that most of them were harmless and repeated because the PC is not truly offline)

The answer is simple. Don't use a Microsoft system. Nowadays, most systems use this data collection, besides Linux which apparently is also it's own bubble. I'm not too fond of Linux even if I try my best to get into it, and I hate OS X with a passion. Windows has served me ever since I began using it, and I'm not seeing that change, with or without data collection. However if you can change that, power for you. I'm just saying all this about the privacy ordeals is an overblown matter, is all.

Now, I just need to take a break from this.

First of all: I really don't know why ZDNet is up into MS's ass like that. Also the article is rather old, there are more recent and balanced ones out there, some of which I have linked.
Also I don't understand why you're in such denial that there is a privacy problem with Windows 10 - are you on a MS payroll?
As I said, defaults for telemetry data transmitted are "Full" for Home and Pro versions and this means lots of data will be transmitted. Most users out there will never even see the settings, let alone change them.

As for not using MS products - there are people out there (me included) who don't have much choice in that matter. Well I could get a different job, certainly...
And let me tell you, I've been using MS products since MS-DOS 5.0, including nearly all Windows versions since 3.0 (except for ME, which I skipped, but including NT 3.5). And the data collection of Windows 10 is really a whole new level.
For the moment I am more than happy with using Windows 7. My father bought himself a laptop with pre-installed Windows 8 - I did not like 'em one bit. As for Windows 10, I may be eventually forced to install them, but for now I good.

The article I linked is literally February 11, 2016. Of your three articles:
*August 4, 2015
*January 7, 2016
*24 February, 2016.

And you're saying that the article I linked is rather old? Funny enough.
And your latest article hasn't said any differently than another ZDNet article, which apparently were even more informative than this. "Up into MS's ass?" So much for being informative.
Also I don't understand why you're in such denial that there is a privacy problem with Windows 10 - are you on a MS payroll?
Ad hominem so much?
...so much for having an opinion.

Not a problem. The options are provided, they chose to ignore it, and then come and complain about it. In an ideal world, looking for the options first before complaining should be the norm.

Not much more so than the reported data collection in previous Windows versions. Heard it isn't as bas as Vista and whatnot, and if you go elsewhere, you'll still have your data extracted.

Whatever your privacy problem here with Windows 10, it's overblown. That's the whole story.
Purely from a mindless user perspective, zero technical thought... Its horrible. And not just because its unfamiliar, it just made changes for changes sake. The new layout to facilitate surface, ugh. Maybe I am just old and crotchety and dont want that newfangled windows on my lawn. Thats a distinct possibility.
