evilnancyreagan: You're gonna be stuck with it eventually, might as well get it for free and take advantage of the DX12 features on your GPU. It's not perfect but, definitely the least problematic of the upgrades so far.

That or you can always go Linux...

Do the iPhone people still make computers?
They are busy in a meeting with some federal bureau of something.

Navagon: I have only used Windows from 3.1 onwards. I don't know what 1-3 where like, so those versions can be considered exceptions from this statement

rtcvb32: Windows 1
Windows 2.1
Windows 3.11

Windows 1&2 were closer to separate mini windows in ASCII-like graphics, at least from what i see. Windows 3 was when they actually went graphical.

Naturally due to the limited 186 technology and memory and graphics, you really can't blame them too much.
I'm considering the possibility that Windows 1 is worse. Does it restart your computer while you're in the middle of doing something in order to install some updates that you don't get to know the first thing about? Because if it does then Windows 1 is definitely worse.
No, I don't even consider it.

PookaMustard: The system doesn't have microtransactions.

Another thing I kept hearing is that the system is DRM'd and whatnot. I'd like if someone checked with me what do they mean by that.
Oh yes they do. Just the simple fact that the Store is now an intrinsic part of Windows makes that point inarguable unless you want to waste time debating semantics. But rtcvb32 nailed it anyway.
No. I'll be going to linux.

I do wish that those people who are happy with win10 would quit their passive-aggressive putdowns (you know who you are) of anyone who has concerns about the direction that MS is taking Windows in. Those concerns are legitimate, whether you regard them or not, and they are in no way mitigated by 'oh, you can turn that off, you know' - the issue is them putting it in win10 in the first place (and making it default on) makes MS untrustworthy, as far as I'm concerned. You're welcome to your positive opinion of win10, try not to insult my choice of not using it.

DaCostaBR: I figured I would do it while it's free but wait for the last possible minute
Is there a cutoff date when it will cease to be a free upgrade?

Main PC (Win7) : I haven't decided yet.

Laptop (Win8) : I decided to do a clean install/upgrade to clear out the pre-installed shovelwear, and now the damn Synaptics touch pad will not work. Basically it works when the driver is first installed, but stops once the computer is restarted. I have to carry my wireless mouse with it around the house like an idiot.
It will probably come with whatever new laptop I buy so it won't be an upgrade per se, but just something I get by default. If I deem Win10 too dependent on cloud / subscription crap then I'll 'down'grade to 7 or 8.1.

If I reinstall Windows on this one, I'll just be sticking with Win7. Does fine, and I don't want to have to dink around with missing Win10 drivers for obscure laptop hardware.

Do you mean windows 10 (vs v1)?

Safe to say very very few people have ever used Windows v1, it was more a prototype for things to come rather than a full commercial release as i understand it. Plus with memory limitations alone. (286 could at best get 16Mb, which is why the change to 32bit versions and protected mode were pushed)

Not to say someone's wrong or anything, but on Windows 7 there's this annoying service you have to have on, else windows LOVES to throw out annoying messages at you. Maybe it doesn't prevent you from using the software, but it's annoying enough that it does the same effect. I have no doubt Windows 8 & 10 both have something similar.

Fuck no

I still use XP!

And 8.1 but that's besides the point!
No. Not for as long as I can hold out.
Yes but only on the last month before the free offer expires sticking with my nice windows 7 home premium till then, if the os pisses me off after upgrading will go back to windows 7

The Windows Activation system component? Come to think of it, that's a very mild form of DRM. During a 5 month period of no internet, I was able to install and activate Windows 10 without a connection to the internet using my key. Think of it as with GOG games here that come with CD keys you have to activate, but without caring whether you're online or offline. It's better than having to be online to do it, is it not?

And since I always paste the code on top of any Windows installation discs...I'm grateful it isn't online activation in a forced way.
no

i dont like what im seeing with windows 10 so far
i will hold out as long as possible but in all likelihood i will move to mac os X
yes, I'll upgrade from w7 but to ... linux :)

Yes, it's one year from the launch date. So that translates into 29.July.2016
But don';t worry, mircosoft is so desperate shoving it down your throat that they'll probably create an app marked critical/important, delivered thru windows update, telling you something like "warning, attention: the free w10 offer will expire in x months/days".

You just called those people "overly paranoid". That's no respect.

Technology is one thing, spying, forcing, advertising, big-brothering, etc is entirely another thing.

I've been literally dying for this. Do you have definitive proof of 'spying', 'big-brothering' and 'advertising'? For the first two, they are again sending just as much data as has been sent in Vista, only this time it's been made clear by them. It got overblown since the technical preview days and continues to be overblown. I've linked an article somewhere in this thread if you're interested to see why I don't see the 'spying' and the 'big-brothering' stuff. Plus isn't it kind of exactly what happens with other systems too?

For advertising, you can toggle on, and toggle off, no third party tools needed.

As for forcing, I particularly don't know. My Windows 8.1 system still remains an 8.1 system even with GWX running all the time.

I'm not paranoid about all of this. But hey, I'm interested in how they're going to spy or big-brother on you anyways. Tell me what makes you, or any other, look interesting in their eyes enough to be really interested in your private data, if we're going to assume that private data gets sent and info about the files on the hard disk and whatnot.
