ncameron: MS is collecting information from Win10 machines. I don't think that can possibly be disputed. Are you still with me? Good. The information they attempt to collect will be used for amongst other things profiling people in order to try to advertise to them. I don't think that could possibly be disputed. Right? Still with me? Ok. I object to this. Even if it can be turned off, I object to the attempt in principle, and won't touch an OS which tries this with a 10 foot pole.
What about a store that attempts to profile you and show you stuff that you may be interested in? Would you object to that as well and leave the store, or would you accept it and continue shopping there? Personal opinion for the "try before you upgrade" is to take a backup of your machine, and install Win10 on it. Win10 gives you a month to revert back to your previous installation, so you could do the test run on your machine, then revert back to it.
Not sure about the other questions you have though, haven't really bothered to look for answers to them.
