ElTerprise: To some degree yes. But today's games often don't need them unless they have backstory in the manuals. Liked that :).
I always liked the lists and descriptions of units in RTS games, or the weapons in FPS games... Often it was useless information, but still fun to have :-)

EndreWhiteMane: I'm getting to the "Hey, it's only $1.19, I should buy it" stage.

ne_zavarj: Me too .
Thank you though guys that you are taking my revenge to these craps.

CarrionCrow: Good evening. =)

Doing okay here. Trying to wake up, watching the Witcher crawl along in my downloader and finding myself getting irrationally annoyed at FLAC soundtracks.
I get the purpose, lossless audio is a good thing, but it's still irritating when the frigging soundtrack is larger than the game itself. (Not that that's happening with the Witcher by any means, that game is huge, but it's happened with more than one older title.)

How's your day been going?
avatar
ElTerprise: I'm doing good - having a really quiet day. Just started to watch some Stargate Atlantis on Netflix (started to rewatch the show after FedCon - bt this time in english)

Well i like FLAC soundtracks but the tend to get really big and it makes it necessary to convert the music files if i want to have them on my phone. FLAC files are just too big...
FLAC is for the audiophiles who spend 3000 bucks on a speaker system.
From my time playing around with low bitrate encoding I can assure you that you need both a trained ear and above average hearing to notice the difference between a 192 VBR mp3 and the original, when listening at moderate volumes. Which is what most of us will listen them at. Artifacts only zbegin to become noticeable when the volume is raised to levels that will have your neighbors calling the police.
The same goes for this craze of encoding all MP3 files at 320. The artifacts in the encoding are caused by the MP3 format psychoacoustic model, not by a lack of space. You will only ever get any benefit going higher than 256 with a very few extremely complex pieces. And even that is overkill 90% of the time. 192 VBR will serve you well 9 times out of 10.

EndreWhiteMane: Nothing in particular, just the super cheap ones. The Zombie Shooters would be a good example. :-)
Well i thought about the Port Royale games and i must admit i didn't know were here on GOG. But there some Ascaron here after all. Even after they went bust (oh i miss their soccer management simulations)

Yes. The techtree was sometimes acutally quite useful but most of these stuff were usually gimmicks :)

Stilton: Carrion, what letter are you on? I'm four games away from the end of the Ts. That light at the end of the tunnel is getting just a little bit brighter.
I'm not going A to Z. Tried that initially, and it drove me to the point of screaming with bored impatience.

Was going to post a picture, since that'd be much more descriptive, but since I keep getting blocked on the grounds of file size limits, I'll use words instead.

I have 27 folders on-screen right now, all of them with info attached on how many are complete versus how many still need to be downloaded.
Still have hundreds of titles left scattered across multiple letters.

In counter-strike most of the weapons and models description are real :)

The Port Royale games are a steal at this price. No one ever agrees which is the better of the 2 but I rather like them both.

Interesting. Hadn't ever looked into it.

From what you're telling me, it pretty much serves no purpose for someone like me, since I listen almost exclusively on a 20 dollar set of headphones and my hearing is half dead from using those headphones on max volume for years at a time.

I am not surprised. -laughs-

Well most of my digital music is either mp3 or ogg...but i like haveing the flac one and i atleast think that i hear a small difference but not actively looking only for lossless music. Even when i rip my cds i mostly rip them lossy and it's fine...

I'd like to see a picture of that if you can get one to work (no, really). Remember we talked about how much of each game's 'goodies' we download? I've been resolutely set on manuals and essential files only, but the further I get and the more files I decline I'm thinking of maybe topping up some favourite titles with the whole package. Some of it looks pretty good. So bang goes a Tuesday completeion. Well, I might think a bit more on that one.
Would everyone please +1 our lovely Valkyrie Moon until her rep pops?
She has just gifted me MOO3 since she saw I wanted it badly.
Talk about a super ninja, what a great surprise! :-)

Ah yes, tech trees... I'd print those out if there was only a digital manual. Pretty useful :-)
I miss the gimmicks and backstories, though... like "this tank was developed by GDI in 2026 by Dr. Mobius... " or whatever it might say :-p

leon30: In counter-strike most of the weapons and models description are real :)
True :-)
I loved those, too... Even if the weapons were real, I liked having information or stories about them. I remember the first Call of Duty manual listing the caliber and rate of fire for each weapon. Not really information that you need to know to play the game, but fun to read anyway :-)

I have the first call of duty for PC, but it doesn't have a manual :(

ne_zavarj: Desura ?
I haven't kept up to speed on Desura - I don't/didn't use them. I've heard they're gone and then that they're just 'restructuring.' Time will tell, but a whole hell of a lot of people must be using their bandwidth to the max right now...
