I AM a minority.
avatar
TARFU: Hey, are minorities rated on some kind of scale? What happens when my minority outranks your minority? Do we go to minority court to get a ruling? Where can one get a minority card? Does it guarantee discounts at Denny's?
No, there isn't such a scale. (There's actually a term I have heard, "Oppression Olympics", for this sort of thing, but it is generally mentioned as something to be avoided.)

Remember that a person can be in multiple minorities; for example, black transgender women exist (and have been murdered alarmingly often).

dtgreene: Just be aware that, while you may be a minority in one respect, you might not be in other respects, and you do not automatically understand that other minority.
And you should be aware of the same.

zeogold: As much as I despise Trump, I have no proof that he'll actually take racist actions as president.
Take a look at his cabinet picks.
avatar
dtgreene: How would you feel if people were using slurs to attack the minority that you're part of? (Or one of them, if there's more than one.)
I'd be wise enough to ignore them.

I don't care what they say. ACTIONS, now that, I care about.
I'm not going to pass judgement until I see what he and his cohorts actually DO. Besides, it's not as you could have used this as an argument before he was elected. We had no idea who he'd pick as his cabinet.
Anyway, I'm not going to waste my time arguing that Trump isn't racist, because that's not a position I can take in earnest.
What I AM going to say is that you should respect that people have other reasons for voting on or supporting the man.

TARFU: I see your race card and cast...cattank!
I want to play too but I can't decide which card to play. Should I go with the sensei (denotes wisdom) or the broken bone (more threatening)?

You know what annoys me? When people can't tell between "respect" and "courtesy." They really aren't the same thing.

Courtesy is polite behavior towards someone. It is granted to strangers and familiar pleasant people. When it comes to strangers, it is granted to them as a gesture of good will and only until they prove that they don't actually deserve it.

Now, respect, is something else entirely. Respect is recognition of one's achievements. It doesn't necessarily come with courtesy. That is you can respect someone and be rude to them all the same. It is not possible to respect a stranger because being a stranger you know nothing of their achievements. It is, however, possible to respect an enemy or something you actively dislike.

I agree with what you said and I'd add what my Grandpa told me. "Respect is something you earn"

There are many strangers, some long dead, that I actively respect, so I will have to disagree with you.

It's from the first episode of "Kung Fu". It's kind of something you don't forget. Almost "burned" into your memory. heh

They aren't really all that strange if you are familiar with their achievements. =) Even though you have obviously never met them.

dtgreene: Actually, to me light moderation would be enough to get rid of a large portion of the posts in this thread directed at me.
Nope, light moderation wouldn't, as you brought these comments upon yourself with your dickish, entitled and self-centered behavior. And no, you don't deserve any preferential treatment over anybody else.

dtgreene: I'm not an extremist; I just feel that people should not be disrespected just because of who they are.
Like said before, it's because of your behavior, not what you are. Whatever that may be...

Also, respect is earned, not given away like free candy.

And yes, given most of your statements, you're an extremist. Deal with it, because unlike words, facts don't lie.

Alaric.us: Now, respect, is something else entirely. Respect is recognition of one's achievements.
Achievements aren't the only thing that can be respected. For example, one can respect one's identity, and it is in this case that language matters. There is a difference between using somebody's preferred pronouns just to be polite and actually accepting that that person actually is the gender associated with those pronouns.

In other words, there are different things that can be respected.
