snowkatt: installing morrowind on windows 98 under virtual pc 2007
550 mb ram
nothing special

morrowind doesnt start under windows 98
the launcher face plants

morrowind also doesnt work under windows ME

might dig gta vice city up later see what that does

next up virtual box !

Matewis: Stellar! Though I'm a just a teeny bit concerned by how much you seem to be enjoying this ;)
Reminds me of one of the few kind of funny scenes in BBT

By the way, what do you do with display drivers when setting up such a virtual system? Do you seek out older ones?
I imagine there might be some potential incompatibility issues when you pair up old drivers with a new gpu.
actually a virtual machine tends to emulate a complete system down to the video card
the current hardware is more the capable enough to run it

the latest version of virtual box seems quite feature rich
the video card has 64 mb of ram

and windows 98 just installed
I love virtual machines, I love being able to run older games with my legit win 98 SE. I am tempted though to just make an old school game machine for the hell of it.

Oh I see, I wondered about that at first but I thought it might be a bit too resource intensive to completely emulate a different gpu from that time. Pretty amazing really :P

it kept crashing and bsodding through set up
i decided not to bother with it and just upgrade to windows ME ( i have to i only have a windows ME upgrade disk )

lets see what morrowind does with windows ME

Matewis: No love for morrowind? It's one of the best games ever made! For the first 8 hours at least, then I get bored :P
avatar
snowkatt: zero
i hate morrowind i prefer oblivion
i think morrowind is ghastly boring and over rated

anyway im installing windows 98 so lets see what will happen
I agree, Arena and Daggerfall before it oozed atmosphere, Morrowind is the dreariest looking videogame I have ever played in my life. Everything is a shade of grey or brown.

If the missing games irritate you so much, there are other ways and means to get hold of them. Just use your initiative.
GOG might be a fantastic site, but it is not the only place in the world to get older PC games.

its so boring and dull everything is brown or grey or black or more brown
its the fore runner of call of medal of battlefield only in a fantasy setting

oblivion looks lush at least

Oh I have Myst 3 on Disc which works fine, but Myst 4...? Not optimised for modern computers.

I guess, I could always order Curse of Monkey Island off of Amazon or something, but I just know a week after I get it it'll be announced on GOG.

tinyE: I'm still pissed about SimCity 3K not being here. I'm tempted to investigate getting it on Amazon.
I've heard it through the grapevine that SimCity 3000 is coming to GOG, along with a number of other Electronic Arts games, in the near future.

no but its mostly the ease of use
for some games you have to jump through ridicilous hoops to get them to work

and some dont even bother
EA is giving away nox for free
and the fucking thing crashes on start up

I don't trust anything EA gives for free. They had a special promotion for the entire Sims 2 collection, and fans were like "that's pretty generous of them, maybe EA aren't the soulless execs that people make them out to be"

It turns out the Sims 2 download contained a specific malware to prevent pirated games (yet also rare games that use similar enough code) from working or something like that. But I'm not too keen on the details.

Alright, I found the post by SCPM that lists games he found on GOG's database, including SimCity 3000!

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/games_that_are_unofficially_confirmed_for_release_in_the_future_part_2/post3811

Already eight games from that list have either been released here or have entries on the catalog. It's only a matter of time for the rest.

It's weird trying to remember all my previous operating systems. Everything before vista is kind of a blur. Except 98, I remember it and all the bluescreens I got :P

As for morrowind, the first time I installed it was probably on windows xp. I'd be massively surprised if it works on ME. I seems to recall it could be nuisance when it came to games.
