Skarn: Your list of mods left out the BattleTech mods.

Unfortunately, both of them (MechWars & Total BattleTech) replace the EXE with one that still needs the CD. :(

(Doubly frustrating since they were one of the main reasons why I bought TA.)
Does anyone know how to get Total BattleTech working? It's the main reason I bought the game as well. With version 1.40 installed it asks for the CD when trying to play a skirmish. They made a NoCD patch for it as well, but that just comes up with an error message saying anims\igtitles.gaf.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just checking it out now, but yes. it looks awesome
Are there any mods you'd recommend for a first-time player? Obviously nothing that significantly changes the gameplay, but interface improvements and that sort of thing. Stuff that'd make it easier to learn and play.
These mods look nice. Are there any mods which improve the enemy AI? I've heard the one out of the box is pretty awful (Note: I haven't started playing the game yet as other tasks need my attention). Or do some of the mods you listed already do that on top of the other changes?

The normal interface is very basic, at least compared to games of today with stupid menu systems and so on.

You click the commander and start building, it's simple.
Does anyone know how to get the 5K unit patch.

Years ago the discovery of this was the BEST GAME EVER! (couldn't build 1000 if I tried)

If anyone has any insights or finds it, Thanks!

The interface in TA is fundamentally different even from competitors in its own time. There are no unified build menus. Every type of building unit or structure can have its own collection of objects. Groups are activated via Alt + x. Double-tapping won't centre the screen on the selected group. When you put a structure in a group, the units it produces will enter the group and the structure drops out. As far as I know, it is also not possible to strictly add units to a group when you select another crowd with shift + click. All previously selected objects, which are selected again per shift + click, will be deselected at the same time. Adding units to a group thus becomes difficult.

That's one of the reasons, why StarCraft is remembered as maybe the most memorable title in the RTS genre and not TA.

The keyboard commands are usually not complete and a small part of them is wrong.

If you are a looking for improvements of the interface, you might be looking for the patch hosted on tauniverse.com.

This is how you can distingish the truly GREAT game from just good one: it can be modded through years, and years, and years...

That's soooo true... 90% of games made these days aren't half worth the time and effort then the old games.
The old games have SOUL... New games are just a shadow of a husk...

Try Dominions 4 or Conquest of Elysium 3 (made by Illwinter Games, literally two guys from Sweden). If you can bear hand-drawn tiny sprites and overall 20-years-old graphic look, and have no grudge against TBS, you could find these modern games have SOUL indeed. You can feel these games are made with care and love. And they have truly epic scale, and epic quantity of content, and epic community.
TA: Escalation is the most played mod on GameRanger. 7.6 is currently in development with rebalancing and unit additions.
