I'm really dissapointed - first game i've bought from GOG, and the only fix is to roll my drivers back so that the other games I play are unplayable. The only reason i bought it here was so I could play it without faffing around.
Any chance GOG will patch this - or am I stuck with a game that I just can't reasonably play ?

This game is as patched as it can be, and GOG has done everything possible to make it work.
It's just one of those games, that's hard to make work on every PC (different user settings and installed programs etc.).
This is also why they write on the game page, that this game works best with the old driver, so it's not like you weren't warned before buying.

Macdory: I can't get it to run fullscreen unless I have AA on, and then I can't see all items. So, I have to run it in software mode which looks god awful and in a window, which is too small to be comfy.

This is very weird, actually, since people had trouble making it run in windowed mode, not the other way around...
You should elaborate a bit more on what exactly prevents you from using fullscreen, step by step...
Oh, and first of all - don't force any global 3D settings - TLJ isn't not going to like it.

try this, maybe this helps!
I just tried forcing 16x AA on my nVidia 260 with 196.21 driver and it works nicely - I can finally see what the characters look like! Unfortunately it also broke something else; now whenever April walks behind something she never disappears from view, she just floats in front.
Such disappointment :(

I know this seems to be a long dead thread, but just wanted to add my findings.

I have a Radeon HD 6870, AMD Phenom II x4, Windows 7x64.

So far in just playing chapter 1, I have gotten the AA to work with the following settings and drivers.

In Config.exe, only Force single buffer is checked.

AMD Catalyst 11.2

AA is set at 8x
Anisotropic Filtering at 16x
Tessellation to Use application setings
Texture Filtering to Quality
Vertical Refresh to off unless application specifies
Anti-Ailasing Mode to Performance (Multi-sample AA)
Triple Buffering Unchecked.

Hope that someone can find this information useful. Thus far, no missing scenes, item or image pop in, and the character models look much improved. Somehow, actually more recognizable as people.

i decided i'd re-play this adventure classic a few days ago, but found it had anti-aliasing & element flickering issues on my current system. i searched forums for hours trying multiple solutions which didn't work. but the settings in your post, devin, fixed everything. i just wanted to say a HUGE thanks for posting!!

xa_chan: Hmm, okay, i tried to mess up with the Nvidia control panel settings for TLJ, but in fact nothing changes at all in-game ! I mean, i selected the game.exe that runs TLJ, applied several changes about anisotropic and AA filters, applied the changes, closed the window, launched TLJ and... nothing ! It is as if i hadn't changed anything!! But when i go back to the Nvidia control panel, i see that my customs settings are still there.

Anybody can help me to find out why?
I know this is a couple years old but I had this problem aswell as I just recently bought the game. The solution I found was to rename the game.exe to game2.exe or whatever you like. I think the problem was nvidia confuses game.exe with another game.exe, in my case it was Red Alert which I dont even have. Since ive changed it the profile actually saves and I dont need to change the global settings to get it to work. Don't forget to change the shortcut on the desktop to point to game2.exe if you want it to still work.
Unforutnately I find I now suffer the problem others have of the top of the tree and egg missing at the start. Gonna fiddle around with some more settings.
Interesting, thanks! I have not tried The Longest Journey for a long time, but i'll keep what you wrote in mind next time i'll try it!
so does this work for nvidia drivers?

version 275.33

I did the same as you, and April is much smoother now with the AA on. But I'm having problems with the Egg and Tree as well...it won't appear unless I'm standing real close to it....

I might just say screw this and play the game with stock settings...judging by how this game is, its gonna be crucial for me to look out for clues and it ain't gonna help my frustration if it keeps disappearing

Thank you Devin! You sir are a genius. I've been looking for a way to enable Anti-Aliasing with ATI cards on this game for years. I never wanted to play it cause the jaggies drove me crazy (jagged Edges and OCD don't go well together). Today, I get to sit down and take my first step into what I hear is an amazing game. Thanks again Devin. You're the man!

I can confirm that this didn't work for me on a 7550HD

YES!!! Thank you SO MUCH Devin. I have been trying forever to get this puppy to work (have not replayed it since 2000) I am well into Chapter 1 with no issues, thank you :)
So FSAA is still borked in nVidia drivers? It works only on ATI?
