I tried playing Outcast at the start of last year. Didn't get into, the controls were weird, I couldn't work out whether it was a shooter or an adventure game, the combat was hard, etc. I tried again in the middle of last year, still didn't get into it. I think it was partially my fault, I was lacking in patience and just wasn't sure how to play it.

I starting playing again on the weekend. Now I am totally hooked. I took my time to get to know the controls, and the world, etc. I am loving it. The world is so richly developed, the music is amazing, the combat is fun once you get the hang of it, the atmosphere kind of reminds me how I imagined Another World would be in my head (if there was more interaction with the people). I really think the world is beautiful and interesting. You cannot really rush through the game, you kind of have to listen to what the characters are saying so that you can follow the quests, which, as someone who grew up playing games in the 80s when quests were shoot that or kill that, is not always easy for me to do.

Anyway, I have probably spent about 5 hours in the game and am really enjoying it. To me, it is a perfect sci fi action adventure (so far). I am glad I persisted.

That said, I have absolutely no interest in the kickstarter. I find the graphics in this game to be nice, I don't need it HD-ifiied and the music is amazing. For me a remake is completely superfluous when I am enjoying the old game so much (which to me, being made after I became an adult and stopped playing games is new-ish).

Keep in mind that part of the goal of the Kickstarter was to, eventually, raise funds for a full sequel. Financing a remake is much cheaper, so the team could raise awareness and get new players who may have never tried the original, and get a bigger fanbase going so there will be more interest and more funding potential for a full sequel later down the line.

I donated for that reason, and also as a way of thanking the developers for the original game, which I only played for the first time a few years ago.

It sounds like the team are not giving up and will be investigating other funding options to get the remake made. Hopefully it will interest new players and make a full sequel feasible.
A new update about what the devs learned from the failed Kickstarter. They learned a lot:

I was quite interested in the HD reboot, but I didn't exactly follow the news on this. So, the Kickstarter failed? Oh well... :-(

Yeah, unfortunately. But it sounds like the team is still hoping to make the game, and may look to some form of crowd-funding again, so keep an eye on this thread for news on that.
Now that the Kickstarter failed I assume it will take some time before they are up and running with something similar? I know it's Greenlit on Steam but that doesn't affect their budget much.

Being greenlit on Steam means squat, to be honest. It gives a bit more exposure and the guys at Valve agree to release your game as soon as it's done, but that's about it.

I backed the train-wreck that was Shadow of The Eternals (a spiritual sequel to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, for the Nintendo GameCube) and the game was greenlit way before the Kickstarter campaign ended, but it brought noting tangible to the table. And, now, they're greenlit, and all, but I don't think the game will ever come to exist.

Outcast's situation isn't that much different, except for the fact Franck Sauer isn't nearly as controversial as Denis Dyack, though both thought the love fans have for their games was enough to fund $650,000 (Outcast) and $1,000,000 (Shadow of The Eternals, later lowered to $750,000, on the second crowd sourcing campaign).
It's too bad this Kickstarter campaign failed, but oh well, maybe next time. This time, however, they will need to have something really good to show to the players, a well-done gameplay demo and some finished "remastered" stuff. Otherwise it's going to fail just like the previous one and I want Outcast Reboot HD to see the daylight. And one day Outcast 2, perhaps.

I hope they manage to get the reboot made too, but I haven't heard anything in a while. Hopefully they'll find a way to fund it, but I worry that it's not going to happen.
Yeah, I think they're just working hard on the new campaign and some really good promo material. Or perhaps looking for new ways to fund the project. Or both.
